nüvi 760 - change headphone to line out

I've read where changing the output on the nüvi from "headphone" to "line out" increases the volume and quality of the signal when running through a cassette adapter.

I went into the diagnostic screens and changed the setting to "line out" but, when I go back to the diagnostic screens, it's always set to "headphone" again. How does one go about changing this setting and making it stick?

Wouldn't 'Line Out' be a lower voltage (1V), and higher impedance source than a 'Headphone' o/p?
From the measurements I took (admittedly on a Nüvi 310), I came to the conclusion that the headphone jack was just the speaker o/p fed through a 4ohm resistor.
That's not to say, that a proper 'line out' jack wouldn't be more suited to connecting to an AUX jack...would depend on what that AUX jack is expecting, I suppose.

I was always under the impression, that these were just settings for the diagnostics ... but who knows? ...

It may be that you can't set it

It may be a selection the unit makes, depending on what's attached to the unit... They make these things pretty smart.... wink

Can you check it when it's attached to aux output?

I'm having massive difficulties with the old cassette player spitting everything out so I'm considering replacing the CD player with one that has an AUX input. That input is likely to want the "line in" setting rather than the"headphone" setting. (I think.......)

I also thought the diagnostic screens were simply that - diagnostic screens - but I've read in other postings that it's possible to set the output of the jack to be "line out" so I was guessing that's where it's done since it's the only place I can find any reference to it at all.

Perhaps I've simply been confused by others who "thought" it could be changed because they saw that setting in the diagnostic pages.

On the subject of aux inputs

One of my cars has an after market system installed, it has and aux jack, and everything sounds great. Cd's, fm, mp3 player and my gps all sound good. So I have a hard time comparing it to my wife's car which has a factory system, no aux jack, no sub-woofer etc.

I have been reading how bad the fm transmitter is on the 760. Yesterday I took the antenna off my wife’s car, it just screws on, I found a fm station with just static, tuned the nuvi to it and I thought it was quite satisfactory, not as good as my car, but not all that bad either....

I know I am comparing apples and oranges or pcs, but it didn't loose its signal once. I suppose it was because I removed the antenna. In Los Angeles it is hard to find an unused fm frequency but In a 50 mile trip it worked very well with no interference from fm stations and no static etc.

Diagnostics options

There was a similar discussion a while back, about enabling 'both' speakers on the Nüvi 3xx series. The Audio Test Page clearly says "Left Spkr" "Both Spkrs" "Right Spkr". (But the device definitely only has one speaker) smile

These screens are undocumented, so it's hard to know, for certain, what (if anything) all the options do...
