Nuvi 750 - Headphone jack........

I'm considering the purchase of a Nuvi 750 but I've been holding off due to the negative reports involving the FM Transmitter. It's very important that I be able to use audio books and mp3 files with the unit.

I believe there is a headphone jack on the 750. Has anybody used it with an adapter that plugs into a cassette player? There are numerous adapters out there for mp3 players that plug into the headphone jack and then the other end of the cable has a unit that looks like a standard cassette tape and you plug that into the cassette player on the dash and play it through the car speakers. The sound is supposed to be MUCH better than any FM transmitter.

Has anybody done this with the Nuvi 750 and, if so, how is the sound?

I don't want to mess with getting a "standard" mp3 player for audio books and mp3 files if the same type of solution functions well with the 750.

Works Extremely Well

I use one with my 660 (model of GPS is irrelevant) and I couldn't be happier . . . OH, yes I could . . . I bought mine at Radio Shack and there is a roller that allows the tape transport mechanism to continue to turn and the roller rattles. You can only hear it during periods of silence, but if they'd spent 25 cents more and put in a decent roller it would be better. I've heard good things about the Sony brand.

This is exactly how I use my 760. Even though the FM transmitter works fairly well for me with vertually no interference, at least in the area I live, I use mine with a cassette addapter just as you discribed you are considering. I do that because I think the sound is better with the adapter. To me, the stereo separation seems to be better and I don't mind the extra wires. Another factor is that my 760 is fairly new to me and I am still discovering what works best for me and I 'kind of' enjoy the experimenting. However, the difference in sound levels between the Nav voice, media player, and bluetooh phone are a bit different and I am still trying to balance all those out to the same levels. It seems to be a bit more sensative with the adapter than with the FM trans.
Your mileage will most likely be different.

Sony At Best Buy

I bought a Sony brand cassette adapter to use with my Nuvi 660 and I couldn't be happier. The sales person tried to talk me into their no-name house brand, but after reading the recommendations at POI-Factory, I stuck with the Sony brand. It works great in both my vehicles.

As bentbiker mentioned, I do not hear any "roller rattle" from this adapter.

750 audio thru headphone jack

I have a 750 and use it from the headphone jack to the auxiliary input on my car stereo. The sound is great. I listen to podcasts and music with it.

It has also been described that you can get into the 750 diagnostic screen and change the headphone out to a line out which gives you more volume to your car stereo.

I use my auxiliary jack in my Honda CRV. Works great.

to Aux

I've hooked up the 750 to the auxiliary jack, and it works great.

My personal challenge is that I use the car stereo, so I have to settle for the Nüvi's internal speaker.

The FM xmitter sucks

I use an external transmitter that cost $19.95 and the sound is clear and the signal is strong. I think it's better than the tape adaptor. Plugs into the head phone jack.

Go for Sony--

The Sony cassette adapter works better than the no-name cheepies. That's what I use in the Jeep with my 660. In the Mini I use the Aux connector. Had a no-name adapter, and after a very short period, it sounded like I had a cage of mice with me, the squeak-squeak-squeak constantly. Found one of the Suny adapters, and the no-name went into the nearest rubbish bin!

Sony adapter

I got the Sony adapter and it worked for about a week. Now all it does is put an error message on the display and auto-eject. Once in a great while it will stay in and work but, even then, it will tend to work for a short while and then eject from the cassette player. I have a nüvi with mp3 capability but the stupid cassette adapter won't work so I can't listen to the music/books I have on the unit. I'm NOT happy.

Cassette Adapter Vs. Using the Stereo ...

Yep - that's a challenge. In my Jeep, with the awful wind-noise, my 660 is not that loud. When I run in through the stereo it's ok - but then I can't use the stereo. I've tried external speakers and a couple have been better. But, they run on batteries and when you forget to turn the speakers off - they eat batteries rapidly.

Searching for a solution ...

Time to think about MP3's

I didn't see the value of the MP3 player until this very same issue came up. Connected to the Aux In on my car stereo, the volume and sound quality is exceptional. But then I can't listen to the radio as I drive. Bought a 4GB card for $15 and downloaded 20 or so albums of music to it. Now I have music again, and it automatically mutes the music when the phone rings or it needs to issue voice prompts.

Like, johnc, I didn't see the value in the MP3 player on my 660 especially with the sub par internal speaker. With the volume turned up for navigation or tunes the speaker would crackle horribly. Once I switched audio output to FM transmitter I fell in love. I get great reception with no interference. I too bought a 4gb card and now listen to my MP3s via Nuvi rather then burned MP3 CDs. Its great, the tune pauses for alerts or phone calls so you won't miss a turn or a call.

My other car doesn't have a digital FM tuner and won't tune quite as close but it still works pretty good there too.

Of course RickEsterson is right, you can't listen to the stereo at the same time but you can certainly switch from eg.92.1 to another FM station, DVD or whatever temporarily.

I think it's a great feature!
