Unable to remove custom POI file

Last night I installed the POI application from Garmin. I then went crazy downloading every Michigan POI file from this sight, then loading them on my Nuvi 200. Then I looked up hospitals on my device, and noticed some where listed twice, and in some cases, identitcal hospitals have different distances of about .2. I then ran the "remove added custom POI from device" program. Unfortunately, I still see hospitals twice.
Any idea on how I can remove them? I did not back up the POI file before doing this. Thanks.

Removing custom pois

When you say POI application are you talking about Garmin POILoader http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/ ?POILoader will remove all your pois form the gps and then you will have to run POILoader again to re-install them to the unit.If this is not the case then review the files you are sending to the gps and make sure you don't have duplicates in the files you are downloading.

yes, POI loader

Yes, its the Garmin POI loader. I don't want to re-load the custom points, I just want the custom POI's removed completely leaving me just the default POI's. From what I can tell, the tool did not remove all the customs because I see dupes in the hospital file, one from the custom upload, one from the default file.

When you go where to,my

When you go where to,my locations, custom pois or extra they should not be showing. Is that the location you are looking at to see if the custom pois are there?

You can also have duplicate files. When you download custom pois to your unit some of the same pois could be in your pr-installed pois. Both are in different locations on your gps.

Just in case when you ran the POILoader if gave you a choice to install or remove custom pois.Did you select remove?

nothing to do with your loading ...

the duplication of hospitals has nothing to do with your loading custom poi files. there are a few things that, for some unknown reason, are duplicated in the factory installed poi database - hospital, airports ...

there have been a few posts on this site about this in the past ... it's a known issue

I have read somewhere that

I have read somewhere that hospitals are listed twice one for the main entrance and one for the emrgency.
Other places, such as malls, airports have multiple entrances.

That's true

Hospitals are listed twice: one for main entrance and one for its emergency room.

Double POIs on Garmin

Check your memory card, if you have pois on your card, they will show up twice, 1. From your garmin
2. And from your memory card

Thanks

Thanks for all the replies.
Regarding the card, I don't have one installed yet. Regarding the "Custom" POI place, I did not see that after installing the POI's. Regarding the "remove" post, I did select that, and it did tell me the custom points are removed.
So then I am wondering why I did not see a place on my 200 to look for custom points after they were installed (and before I removed them).
Also, regarding the hospitals, I wish the existing set-up clarified the emergency vs standard exit. With the hospital closes to me, one of the points sends you down different streets which take much longer to get to the hospital, and I know for a fact that once you get to the main entrance, its easy to figure out the emergency locations vs public parking, all from one location.

Removing pois

Go to the poi file on your pc and remove the poi's that you dont want anymore, and do another poiload.

unit build POI

The truth is you don't have a way to change any unit build POI. You have to live with it. About determining the route, it the unit program who do it for you and you have to live with it to. You can change the way it look for the road by going to the tools and change avoidance. Sometimes this help.

Also take into account that unit build poi may not be updated or it may not be on the exact place. 80% the are correct.

That is why using a custom POI could help this problem. You can change the location where every you want it.

Where are my Custom POIs saved on the GPS - Nuvi 780

I uploaded my first custom poi and it worked. My question is when I went into Extras>Custom POI I noticed that it didn't categorize my custom POIs. Is there a way to do this? And when I looked at the locations, it didn't even say what it was. I downloaded the Costco gas stations. So if I download other POI's like Wal-marts, Sams, etc. and put them on my GPS then will they be put into categories so I can know which is which. Just seeing addresses doesn't tell me anything. Also, when I plug my GPS back up to my computer I don't see where the custom poi files are saved. I did not see the costco.gpx file that was uploaded or anything. Please help me!

There in the poi folder

They are all in one file. You have to click the on my unit you click the custom pois and then they show in catagories. When you open say walmart it will have the nearest one on first, etc...

You can name them as you load them

If you have a poi that you don't want to load over and over you can rename the poi file as an example walmart.gpi. But the file you will see now will be poi.gpi.. Hope this helps.

Still confused

It helped a little. So you're saying when I go on my GPS and I click on Where To > Extras > Custom POIs, then I should see all of my custom POIs categorized. When I did it, it didn't have any categories seemed like.

Also, I wasn't totally sure about what you meant about the changing the name of the poi. You mean change the name of the poi from within the gps folder. I think all of my custom pois are loaded into a folder named GPX on my gps.

Sorry if I confused you..

You have a different unit than I do. On my unit there is a folder called poi in the garmin folder. I thought this was common with all garmins. In that folder should be a file called poi.gpi. That is if you loaded all the files from one folder. Each time you load a poi it replaces that file so if you loaded say redlights from one folder and then loaded walmart from a walmart folder you would only end up with walmart. So as I said put all the files in one folder, run the poi loader and it should load all the files into one file called poi.gpi. But if you wanted to after you loaded redlights, you could go into the folder and rename it redlight.poi, then load walmart and you would have them both that way also...

Gotcha!!

I see what you are saying now......Thanks alot!

Another Way

Rather than renaming files to prevent over-writing, most people create the categories via a file structure on their PC. To steal from Motorcycle Moma's excellent explanation:

For example, it might look like this.

> My POI (Main folder)
>> IHOP (subfolder)
... IHOP.csv
... IHOP.bmp
>> National Parks (subfolder)
... National Parks.gpx
... National Monuments.gpx
... National Recreation areas.gpx
... National Parks.bmp
... National Monuments.bmp
etc.

In this example, IHOP and National Parks show up as categories and then under National Parks, the subcategories of National Parks, National Monuments, and National Recreation Areas show up.

Here are some screenshots of what it would look like.

This is a shot of the folder and files on my computer.
http://i18.tinypic.com/4q8bl8m.jpg

This is how the first level shows up on my Zumo.
http://i9.tinypic.com/4t6c8ye.jpg

When I select the National Parks category, this is what I get.
http://i2.tinypic.com/62qyi4z.jpg

Then if I select National Monuments, I get this.

Still trying to understand this stuff....

bentbiker,
But if I set my computer up that way, when I decide to upload the pois with the POI Loader doesn't it just make one file on my GPS. It won't make different .gpi files will it? It'll just override the last poi files that were put on there.

They will be in different folders

I'm not BB but when you load it if you use the manual mode you will have the option of ignoring the file, if you ignore the file it will not be loaded.

You Are Correct

POI always makes just one file, but that one file will display the multiple categories named by the folders. POI Loader always overwrites the last POI.gpi file, so you must put all the files in folders and reload them every time you update any file -- but we are talking seconds. If you have a current POI.gpi file for which you no longer have the csv/gpx files (to reload), you can rename that file to LostCSVs.gpi or something, and the file won't be overwritten. It is just very cumbersome to me over the long haul to keep renaming files and trying to remember what is current and what is not, so I finally caved in and admitted it is just easier to reload everything, every time.
