Power Nuvi 750 up into Navigation Mode

It works similar to the method mentioned by “GDFAINI” in an earlier thread hooking the Nuvi to a PC and sliding the Power Switch to the Lock position and then “Safely Removing the USB Mass Storage Device”.

In my method when you are not hooked up to a PC you can’t “Safely Removing the USB Mass Storage Device” but you can remove the USB cable and re-plug it back in to simulate the same thing.

Method as stated
1. Plug generic AC Adaptor - USB cable and wait for 750 to go into
mass storage mode.
2. Slide Power Switch to the right (LOCK Position)
3. Remove the USB plus from UNIT and immediately plug back into the UNIT
4. Slide the Power Switch on the Nuvi750 to the MIDDLE position.
5. WAIT for 750 to Boot UP.
6. After 750 Boots UP it will be in the Navigation mode.

Now you can put it in CHARGING mode only by sliding the power switch to the off position and releasing the switch. To get back into the Navigation mode just slide the power switch back to the OFF position and releasing it.

ALSO THIS METHOD WORKS WITH IT HOOKED TO THE PC ALSO in the MASS STORAGE mode.

Try this method on all other Nuvi units and see if they work. It works on the Nuvi7xx series.

Now I only have to one AC-USB Power adaptor on my trips !!!!!

Power up

The 660 doesn't have a slide on and off switch it has a push button you have to hold down.

No Slide On The 660

Yeah, I was wondering about that too. The 7xx series must be different with the slide power switch. All the 660 has is a power on/off push button. Guess we're out of luck! neutral

Spend $20 and get the Garmin AC adapter...guaranteed to work with no frustrations and you don't need a pc to charge it and work in the navigation mode at the same time.

With Garmin Lock enabled?

My 760 will work as you described, unless I have the Garmin Lock enabled. Have you tried the 750 with the lock enabled?

No I havn't tried it with the lock enabled. I don't use the LOCK, I never leave the Nuvi in the car. IT GOES WHERE I GO!! Even if I get out of the car to put gas in and walk 10 feet away to pay. IT GOES WITH ME!!

750 Does Not Work If Lock Enabled

Thanks for the instructions HHannah, and thanks for the bit about Lock Hornbyp.

The instructions do not work for my 750 if I have Lock enabled. It works as described if I turn Lock off. My test were done via my laptop USB. Next week I'll have to borrow my friend's cigarette USB plug to see if it works in the car.

BTW, my 750 is running Garmin software v4.60.

Any mini USB charger might work.

I have an AC adapter for a pair of Motorola HT820 bluetooth headphones that use the mini USB port for charging. This adapter charged my nuvi 760. I suspect any motorola charger for any of the RAZR phones might work as well.

New method of doing this

As some of you might remember last year we were trying to get the Nuvi 7x0 to boot up in the navigation while connected to the pC via a USB cable. And also if one were using a non-Garmin AC power adapter such as a Motorola Cell Phone charger.
We came up with a few work-a-rounds by sliding the power switch to the lock position the back etc etc (as described in a few of the above posts.

But By Golly Miss MOlly there is now a simple and easy way of doing this.

Not sure what update fixed it or what did fix it. But now all you have to do is while the NUVI is in the MASS STORAGE MODE is to unplug the USB plug and wait for the NUVI to read "LOADING MAPS" in the boot-up mode, then replug the USB cable into the NUVI and it will continue to boot up in the Navigation mode and charge the battery.

That worked on my nuvi 780.

That worked on my nuvi 780. Thank you! smile

Does not work on an 885

The unplug/plug-in while loading maps doesn't work with the 885.

It should work

It should work, if it works for 1 unit of the 8x5 series it should work for all.

Explain just what you are doing and I'll check it out.

Has always worked

I'm sure that the idea of plugging the USB cable in at the time the Nuvi screen reads "loading maps" has worked that way on the 7x0 Nuvi since I bought my 760 in March 2008. I don't recall using any other method.

No biggy but you actually you don't have to wait for the "loading maps" message to appear. If you pull the USB cable out of the Nuvi it will reboot. As soon as the reboot process starts with the copyright messages at the bottom of the screen you can plug the USB cable back in and it will boot up in GPS mode.

If it's going to work with the 8x5 models that maybe what you need to do, don't wait, but replug the USB cable back in prior to the 'loading maps' message.

Steps taken

Steps taken:
1. Plug in USB - Wait for Storage Mode
2. Run POILoader - load new/updated POI
3. Unplug USB
4. Wait for "Loading Maps"
5. Plug in USB
6. Unit continues booting, goes back to displaying Garmin, goes to Storage Mode

ALTERNATE ATTEMPT
1-3 Same
4. Wait for Garmin screen
5. Plug in USB
6. Unit continues booting
7. Goes to Storage Mode

NOTE: The Copyright screen is not on long enough for me to plug the cable into the unit. I'm not that fast any more.

Try this.

Plug the USB cable back in as soon as the USB/PC icon disappears. This may give you enough time for the procedure to work.

I'm not sure if the 8 series works the same as the 7 so just attempting to find a solution for you. On the 7 series when you unplug the USB cable you don't see the Garmin screen. All that happens is that the USB/PC icon disappears and the reboot process begins. The first indication of the reboot is the copyright information appearing and your right it goes by pretty fast. The solution I found was to barely pull out the cable. I hold it right upto the port on the Nuvi and as soon as I see the copyright I push it back in.

The trick is to get the USB cable reinstalled as soon as possible after the Nuvi realizes it has been removed.

a_user, out of curosity, try it without step #2. I did my 750 last night and it worked, but I still prefer the wall charger. Will have to try it after doing step #2 to see if there is any change later on today.
