Speed Cameras MAY be coming to California

Just read this on the LA Times. Beverly Hills police want California legislature to allow speed cameras.

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-speedcam14apr14,0,69...

Keep up the good work Miss POI. I am sure were are going to need your services even more in the future

So does anyone think that

So does anyone think that this is actually likely to happen? I can't see the public in California supporting this enough for lawmakers to put these in place.

Somewhat shocked California wasn't first

From what we read and hear about California's auto laws and such, it is surprising that they weren't the first to use speed cameras.

Interesting that they mention a concern outside L.A. where the average speed is 9 mph above the posted speed limit. In Atlanta, very often the average speed is 20mph or more above the limit AND there is little chance you'll get a ticket for those speeds. It is well known that our police look to pull over anyone doing 25mph or more over the posted speed limit.

I'll admit that my view on this varies from time to time and from situation to situation. Some school zones near me are the worst and most of the times it is the parents belonging to those specific schools (examples: driving 15mph+ above school zone limit, tailgating, and other agressive behavior). Another case is the street outside my neighborhood, where sport bikes/cycles now and then easily reach 100mph+ in a 40 zone (where the road is sorta twisty with blind driveways and hills). Motorcycles are another issue altogether, where too many sport bikes ruin their own reputation and safety. Motorcycles are really cool and I appreciate them a lot, but a much higher percentage of them in my area no longer obey any traffic laws......literally. No flames please, just an insight on the topic related to my specific area.

No matter what the view......roads today are no longer a friendly place and the battle to change it was probably lost a long time ago.

Very intersting topic!

Thanks for the news

I will definately keep my speed camera files up to date now... just in case.

Money

California will do anything to suck money out of the taxpayers.

The ALREADY ARE HERE in the Santa Rosa area! They've been putting up cameras like crazy lately HOWEVER my guess is that not all of them are active YET.

Please remember CA is the left coast with all the Dem's up north making the law for the state of CA. THEY WILL DO ANY THING to take more money from us. Case in point the plastic bags at the store are about to have a .25 cents per bag tax put on them. I am going to go to Costco they use boxes not bags. So yes I do in a heart beat.

At least NJ does not have

At least NJ does not have any! smile

They should have red light

They should have red light cameras in all states. If you don't run red lights then you don't need to worry about them being there! smile

red light and speed cameras

I would have to say that most red light cameras nowadays will have a speed camera also. How else can they calculate if you run red light?

It's coming... i'm sure

Public backing isn't an issue for them... It comes down to money. If it can make money, it will come (unfortunately).

Its coming....

California: Cameras to catch speeders blocked!!!!

SACRAMENTO
Cameras to catch speeders blocked

Lawmakers blocked a proposal Tuesday to allow Beverly Hills police officers to use cameras to catch speeders, saying it would put collecting fines above stopping dangerous drivers.

State Sen. Sheila Kuehl (D-Santa Monica) had written legislation for a test program in which Beverly Hills officers would hold a camera triggered by a radar gun that would record speeders. Tickets would be mailed to violators.

But the Senate Transportation Committee deadlocked 5 to 5 on the bill. Sen. Jenny Oropeza (D-Long Beach) objected that the system would let the driver speed on and not stop his or her dangerous behavior.

She also objected to the fact that the system would rely on a private contractor. "Basically, what it does is it creates revenue for a private company," she said.

I can't believe that her issue was that a private company would make money. There are so many issues with these camera's, the least of which should be that someone besides the local government is making money. Unbelieveable.
Once they have it in CA, all states will follow and we will all soon have a camera at every corner. Big brother is watching...

vandals

I live near Oakland, CA. Im really surprised that no one has stolen or vandalized any of the cameras out on the corners....someone needs to step up and maintain the reputation of Oakland....

Well,

how about they issue Polaroid cameras! Buy the time they get the picture developed, where would that driver be? Just kidding! Speeders are really dangerous and in AZ they injure more folks in intersections than on the freeways which are 75mph, which means ANY vehicle can be in the number 1 lane! Think about that when your doing 74 and a 18 wheeler pulls in behind you! Any comments?

Beverly Hills ticket.

Beverly Hills will ticket you even if you have never been there.......

I once assisted a disabled state employee by helping him with his flight, hotel, car rental, and acting as his driver when he needed to travel. We flew into LAX and rented a car and drove to Northridge for a career day thing at the college. We were there all day.

A week later I got a parking ticket from Beverly Hills. They had my name and driver's license number but the wrong car from the rental company. The license number, make, model, and color of the car were all different than the car we rented. The ONLY option offered to correct the issue was to attend traffic court in Beverly Hills. Nobody would assist me over the phone, by mail, or any other way. Their response was that I could fly back to LA, pay for a rental car, hotel, meals, etc. and go to court or I could pay the ticket.

It's ALL about money.......

(c) The authorization in Section 21455.5 to use automated enforcement systems does not authorize the use of photo radar for speed enforcement purposes by any jurisdiction.

So if the state needs money, just break or rewrite the laws. Make anything that was illegal, now legal and collect money. Great idea. California will implode.

Always fun reading...
