The local paper published the reports for the two intersections. More that 20% increase in accidents and also 3 more injury accidents. The police say the cameras are promoting safety. Without the cameras maybe there would be even more wrecks. $419,000 fines result in only $103,000 profit for the city.

Eventually both sides of this argument will have to appear before a judge (perhaps 9-judges) and state their cases.
As more and more data comes in on these machines it appears the "legitimate government purpose" of safety just isn't expressed in the accident data at intersections where the enforcement cameras have been installed.
Further, while the municipalities and camara operators gleefully release gory accident videos, caught on the same cameras, they seem reticent to release data or speak publicly about the cameras' statistical safety record...That is usually the sign that something is not working out right for them.
