Thank you very much for the advice where to buy MM.

I'm checking prices now.

Price of Map Updates

Sonething to consider about having to pay for map updates:

NavTeq employs many people that drive around the country recording the features that go into map updates. I'm sure there are many hands and processes that go into this data. Garmin licenses the data from NavTeq and creates their own formatted information that you and I purchase. So we've got a lot of people to thank along the way by helping pay for their salaries.

I called Garmin today, Re my recently purchased
nüvi 680. Preloaded with City Navigator North America NT 2008. I did get them to send me the DVD or CD
so that I could load MapSource on my PC (the 2008 version that came preloaded on the nüvi) He told me
to check the web site frequently for the 2009v. I'm
not going to press them for it but if they offer it
I'll take it. They still list this price
nüvi® 680
Part Number: 010-00540-25
Suggested Retail Price: $ 857.13 USD. Costo is selling it for $399 The actual unit was made in Taiwan, and probably cost Garmin less than $50 to manufacture.
The retail price is all about making it work R & D.
A plus is that they did answer the phone, with less
than a 5 min hold. spoke English that I could understand. A good comparison would be Quicken (Intuit) a software only company. Now I really like
their product and it may be working fine for me
But they will tell you certain features will be disabled or stop working unless you upgrade. With
$10 off it still cost $80. to upgrade.I've purchased
at least 5 upgrades to Quicken having used it for over 10 years. Probably about $400 total, and the only real reason that I need a Windows PC. My next
purchase will probably be Linux or MAC running as dual boot. Garmin needs to get the upgrades down to a reasonable cost They would sell a lot more if the cost was less than $25. Same with Quicken.
I would have never purchased the nüvi ® 680 at the $857 price. I almost didn't purchase it at the $399 price. But with another 50% price drop the sales will take off just like LCD TV.

Cost to manufacturer is a TINY part of the price

Fishking54 wrote:

Which has nothing to do with the price it is sold for. Besides the actual cost to manufacture the product itself, there is research and development, prototyping, customer services, repair, employees salaries, office buildings to lease/buy and maintain, taxes to pay, insurance, travel expenses, shipping costs, advertising & other promotional efforts, etc. etc. etc. Oh, and yes, being a "for profit" company, there is some profit built in so there is incentive to continue to do what they do and make more money.

Garmin Part Numbers?

I looked on Amazon and a couple other e-tailers and they are advertising "City Navigator North America NT 2009 Map Update" with a part# of 010-10989-01 and the Garmin web site has the part# as 010-10989-51. What is the difference? Maybe just retail packaging vs plain jane packaging?

Whups - Just answered my own question. Per the GPSCity web site, the part#'s are the diffrerence between jewel case retail packaging and cardboard sleeve packaging.

Click the link in the first post to gpscity. They explain the part number in the second paragraph under product details.

Update

I've just updated my nuvi 650 yesterday. No problems but it took about 1/2 hour to do. I bought the unit 3 weeks ago so I'am happy that I got the update for free.

I called Garmin support today (4/24/08). Basically, one must connect their Nuvi unit to a PC. Using the Garmin Web updater software, it will determine when the Garmin unit first connected with the Satellites (i.e. first turned on). If it first connected after 3/1/08, then the maps will be auto-upgraded to NT 2009, for free.

If you have registered your unit, you should get an email from Garmin last week of Apr/first week of May noting 2009 maps are available (got to wait for availability from Garmin's web site). If you haven't registered, as mentioned above, the Web updater will determine if your unit is entitled to a free update.

Hope this helps

Maps are available. I checked my.garmin.com and was offered a free (downloadable) update for my 76CSx because I registered the 2008 maps about a month ago.

However, I checked for my Nuvi - which I registered 2 DAYS AGO - and they offered to give me an upgrade for something like $69! What's up with that?

Granted, I have the updated maps on my computer due to the first upgrade but I would expect to qualify for a free product ID code to upgrade the Nuvi.

I tried to upgrade the Nuvi with the new software and received a notice that the new update was alomst twice the amount of space that was free on my unit. Riiiiiiiiiiiight. Obviously it won't work unless Garmin gives me a new code and info on how to procede.

Very unusual for me, I'm not really happy with Garmin. Normally I'm a huge Garmin fan boi........

Guess I'll have to wait until Monday and see if I can get someone on the phone. Sigh......

Garmin 2009 North America NT Update

What gives with the message stating that I don't have enough memory on my Garmin for this update? I have a 4GB memory stick, of wich only 2.7GB is being utilized, and 918MB on my Nuvi itself when it has approximately 1GB available. It says I need 39MB of space on my Nuvi. I can delete the foreign languages, etc that I don't need, but I can't see how I should have to do that considering it's a Garmin update. Please help!

The update is loaded to the unit itself, so the external memory card doesn't have anything to do with the amount of space available for the update.

The map update needs slightly more than 1GB to be available on the unit itself in order to be installed. Note that the new maps are slightly larger than the previous version, that's why you need more space.

The various units may or may not have enough space for the new maps if you have a bunch of other stuff on the unit.

After you back up the ENTIRE nuvi drive to your computer, delete any voices and vehicles that you don't need and possibly your Custom POI file from the unit. Then after you successfully update the maps, you can load back whatever voices and vehicles and your Custom POIs depending up the space available.

.

I'm hanging back on the update, waiting to see what problems there are. How would this work on the nuvi 200 which has the 48 states map (+ Hawaii and PR)? I don't see that Garmin sells that, just all North America. The 200 has a little less than 1 gig total. I've deleted all languages except English and I have 56 megs open. I could get another 3 megs from vehicles. How would the new map load? Anyone done that on the 200? I'd get the DVD.

If you have a DVD burner on your computer, you should be able just to burn the file directly to a disk.

The Code

When I downloaded my update and got the "key" I wondered how the key is set. Is it the same for everybody, somehow linked to that specific download and embedded in the file or tied to the user?

The key should be tied to the unit onto which the update was installed.

Key

The key is tied to the internal ID number, visable when you go to System, then about. This means you can't download the map for the 750, then decide to put it on a 350 instead.

This is why you must be

This is why you must be connected to the internet when you upgrade.

update

Registered my unit in early March - a couple days ago myGarmin did not list an update for the 2009 maps.

Today I went back to the site and a download was available - that was great - downloaded the file (took 23 minutes) and now I'm ready to go.

First, I have a couple questions:

1) Installing the update to the nuvi seems straight forward - a few months ago I installed Mapsource 2008 to my computer from a disk that Garmin sent me - will this downloaded update file update mapsource 2008 to the 2009 version on my computer?

2) If I decide to dump my computer's drives and reinstall my operating system, will I be able to reinstall Mapsource map on my desktop using the same codes or product keys that I have now?

3) And, will I have to install Mapsource 2008 first from the dvd then update it using the downloaded 2009 update? - or just install the 2009 update by itself without having to use the 2008 disk (in other words, is the 2009 update disk a stand alone install for Mapsource.

thanks

Question 1:
Yes it will install the update into MapSource. It does not replace the 2008 maps just adds 2009, thus letting you have access to both.

Question 2:
Yes save the Codes you received with The update. They will be necessary if you ever have to reload from scratch, Such as a new computer you just bought etc.... If you want to keep the 2008 maps you will have to have those codes also.

Question 3:
Both 2008 and 2009 are both standalone updates. You can reinstall either one or both which ever you want.

New stuff noted in Chicagoland

The new I-355 extension from I-55 to I-80 is now shown on the 2009 update. They just finished that extension in 2007.

Oak Brook Mall has had the roads around the mall added and lots of stores in the mall are in the correct locations now.

Ferry Road near Eola Road in Aurora/Naperville was rebuilt several years ago to take a different route and it's now updated, too.

Orchard Gateway connecting Orchard Road and Randall Road shows now in North Aurora. Deerpath Road was also re-routed at Orchard Gateway. These were all just completed in 2007.

No more flying though outer space on these last few! wink

I'm noticing a lot of new POI's in the area, too.

MapSource makes it REALLY easy to compare the update to the old map. I noticed that you can just switch back and forth between 2008/2009 and it maintains your position and view when you switch back and forth.

Getting frustrated

Received my new nuvi 760 today. Downloaded free map update 2009 from Garmin to my mac desktop. I have 518 mb of space on my nuvi which is obviously not enough space for the 2009 maps.

Do I have to start deleting stuff off my brand new 760 to add the new maps?

Please help. I have searched the forum and am still not able to figure it out.

I would backup the voice and

I would backup the voice and vehicle files to your pc that you don't use and then delete them from your unit.

Do as Nick indicated as far as deleting unneeded voice and vehicle files and be aware that the map update will overwrite (ie replace) the preloaded map file on the nuvi. So, you should have enough space.

Does anyone have recent experience with the 2009 update and are there numerous improvements?

Any other ideas

Well I deleted all but 4 voices and 2 vehicle icons and still getting the message that I do not have enough memory available on my device.

Is it as simple as dropping the "rmu_cnnant2009.dmg" file in my Garmin nuvi folder? Is there something else I may be doing wrong? It took about an hour to download to my computer and it came through 100%. I've emailed Garmin but still no response.

.

No, you need to RUN the update program on your computer.

It will perform the necessary steps to update the maps on your nuvi.

Confused

So, you should have enough space.

Several messages back in this thread, somebody claiming to be Motorcycle Mama said that it required 1G of free space to do the update !! shock mrgreen

Maybe he needs to delete some Custom/User POI's ??

It appears that emails to Garmin sometimes get answers and sometimes don't. A phone call would probably work better......if help is still needed.

2009 update

I really don't see any difference yet.

hmmm...

I'm just wondering, if I got the free upgrade to v2008, I doubt if I'd be elgible for the upgrade to 2009? I see on the list that my unit is compatible with the upgrade, but I haven't checked Garmin's registration site.

Is it worth upgrading?

How often are map updates implemented? This weekend I had to find a street in Alameda, CA. The Garmin 660 purchased in Nov. 2007 (with v2008 maps) does not have several streets in that neighborhood listed but only shows the streets dashed in. I then went to Circuit City, Best Buy and Costco to input the address in all of the GPSr's and the only one that listed the missing streets in the neighborhood is the Magellan 4000 series. I've read somewhere that Garmin and Magellan maps are both provided by Navteq and the TomTom maps are provided by TeleAtlas. So what I don't understand is why does the Magellan maps more current than the Garmin's.
The missing streets in the neighborhood are already on printed maps published in 2006.

How soon should the free update be available after registering

I just got a new nuvi 760 in the mail today and registered it on myGarmin. When I try to upgrade the maps, it tells me that it'll be the $70 download (Same thing some others in this thread saw).

So my question is, should the download be free immediately after registering? Or have people noticed that it takes a day or so before the update shows as free.

I tried calling Garmin tech support but there was a 35 minute hold time and I don't have access to a land-line.

Are you sure your 760 isn't

Are you sure your 760 isn't already reloaded with the 2009 maps?

problem solved

I called Garmin back yesterday right at 9:00 Eastern when they open and finally got a hold of someone.

Here is what was causing my problem: Someone turned my unit on in the factory, which then records the first-locked-on-satellite date in the unit as WAY before I purchased it.

According to the Garmin system, my unit first acquired satellites before the 3/1/08 cutoff for a map upgrade.

The Garmin tech was able to reset this date in the system to be my registration date (6/9/08) and then I was able to download the update for free.

This is a REALLY common issue it seems. You get a new unit and the "first satellites acquired" date shown in their system is sometime a looooong time before you bought the unit. In fact, in my case, it was a date BEFORE THE UNIT WAS EVEN AVAILABLE FOR SALE! The only thing that can be done is what you did - contact Garmin and get them to remove the stupid database entry.

Anyone experiencing this problem?

During the update, the status screen will show a message indicating it is updating the map on the PC but before it registers any percentage completed, it disappears and begins to build the map for the Nuvi.

Manaully Updating CN NA NT 2009 to Mapsource

As Kyle says, the Nuvi 200 updated just fine, but you only get access to the maps that are already preloaded into the system (Lower 48, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, no Canada & Alaska)

- Lance

Added 06/30/2008:

One last thing that I forgot to mention when I loaded the new maps on the Nuvi 200:

When I first tried to install the maps, I got an error message that there was not enough available memory on the device. (SD Card can not be used for this usage.) And, it was about 25MB short of space, not just a small amout of shortage... So, the only way to complete the update was to remove ALL of the other language files. I removed everything but US English and British English, both the Text and Voice files to get enough room for the update. I think the entire North American DB is installed, but access is limited to the original areas on the device.... I currently have less than 13MB of free space before reinstalling the Custom POI files...
