MP3s and SD Cards

I just got a c550 refurb the other day and love it. I tried to download some mp3 audiobooks into an unused 1GB SD card and they were not recognized.

I tried putting them in an MP3 folder and tried to put them in the root directory of the SD card - no joy. They -were- recognized when I put them on the unit itself.

Thinking my refurb unit was glitched, I called Garmin support. After describing the card to the tech, he advised me that 'high-speed' SD cards are not recognized by the GPS unit. I swapped out with another SD card and all was fine.

While I was on the line, I asked him about folders and sub-folders. He said it didn't matter - the unit would find all files on the SD card regardless of the location of the file.

So now I have three audiobooks in separately named folders on the SD card and the m3u playlist files are all successfully found by the unit. Now I'm ready for my 3-hour drive to my meeting tomorrow. Hooray!

SD Cards

I have also heard that HC SD cards have issues. I think the older GPS models are mainly the ones that are affected.

HC Works, but...

Depending on your GPS, the HC SD cards work well after a firmware update to the unit. The only real issue is that the start up time can be very slow. In talking to Garmin, they have said to keep it at 2GB or less and you will be fine. I have a 4GB card, with the card in, the start-up time is painful...

Thank You

Thank you all for the info. It will come in handy when I am ready to upgrade.

Try putting music in mpeg-layer 3 audio

I had a similar problem, i think some of the models accept only mpeg-layer audio format, which is similar to the older MP3 format.

This is my guess and might work, did for me.
