USB problem

Has anyone had a problem with your Garmin GPS not being recognized by your computer when plugged into the USB port? I've had the GPS attached to my computer for 45 minutes and it was not recognized until just now. I didn't do anything, just let it sit, and it took 45 minutes to get recognized.

I've had the nuvi 200 for two months, no problem at first, and gradually it has gotten worse. I've tried different ports. Other USB devices are recognized right away. The GPS beeps when it is connected, showing that it getting power, but the computer does not give the USB hardware found noise and the GPS does not show up as a drive and show the connection picture until much later.

I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what the most likely cause is. I hate to send the nuvi back to Garmin and have them tell me that they found no problem, so it must be my computer.

My original StreetPilot C510 was replaced because it wasn't being recognised - about 3 weeks after I got it. I never tried leaving it for any length of time - certainly not 45 minutes.
Garmin replaced it without question (3 day turnaround) and I ended up with 2 car chargers, 2 carrying cases, 2 mounts etc.

USB Drivers

Removing the Garmin drivers is worth a shot (though that is easier said than done).

The Nüvis and later Streetpilots are accessed as Mass-storage devices and so don't need any other drivers. (The exception being the C5xx - but only in an undocumented/unsupported mode).

I just tried my Nüvi with an ancient laptop running Windows 2000. Apart from ignoring the request for an unnecessary reboot, it was simply a matter of plugging it in and waiting for Windows to configure the Microsoft drivers.

USB problem

Have you made sure that the GPS is mapped as a drive on your computer? If you have several removable storage devices (ie - flash drives, cameras, etc) you may need to go into Computer Management and assign a drive letter to the GPS.

Longshots

Do you plug in the GPS after the computer has finished booting? I cannot boot my Windows PC with the GPS plugged in. Nor can I plug it in during the boot process.

Have you unplugged the USB cable and re-plugged it, to kinda say "Helloooooo . . ." You aren't using a USB extension cable by any chance? My unit won't work with an extension cable. Any chance the GPS is only being recognized after it charges back up after being discharged to a low level?

Doesn't he

Doesn't he have to be able to see the drive to do that?

Try googling some key words

I would suggest googling some of the key words describing your situation. For example I tried "windows xp usb driver problem" Here's MS support article link:

You didn't mention your operating system but you get the idea.

dminz.If you go to

dminz. If you go to start, settings, control panel, system, hardware, device manager, look under disk drives for the gps, right click on it and select properties.Click on device and it will give you the option to roll back uninstall or update the driver.I would try for the update first if one not found remove the driver and unplug the unit then re-connect to computer and let it re-install.

Good point

I wonder if the 45 minute thing was coincedence (sp). I have seen on work computers were all the drive letters were assigned. So my flash drive didn't work. I wonder if you freed one up and that is when it started to work...just a thought.

try cable

I decided to call Garmin about this problem. Got to a woman in their software support section. She said that it couldn't be a driver problem since the unit does eventually get recognized. She said that it was either a USB cable problem or a malfunctioning USB port on the nuvi. They are sending me a Garmin USB cable free. If that doesn't work, I'll have to send the nuvi in for repair.

I'm thinking that the Garmin cable won't help and I'll have to send the nuvi in, but at least I'll get a free cable. The cable I'm now using is new for a Canon digital camera and it has a filter.

To problem solve issues,

To problem solve issues, many times you have to eliminate possibilities. Have you tried it on other computers? if it doesn't work on other computers, it is probably the nuvi. If it does, then you know it is something with the computer and you can start there to problem solve.

I share your experience and

I share your experience and frustration with the garmin nuvi and my high-enough spec. laptop. I have managed to edit my POIs with my desktop without difficulty.
Any luck with the laptop since?

Jerrydes

.

Garmin sent me the new cable. Nice people. But even before I got it, the problem went away on its own. It had been consistently not recognizing the nuvi. Now it is consistently OK. I don't think I'm doing anything different. But I am careful to turn the nuvi on and let it find satellites before hooking it up to the computer. I doubt if that solved anything, but I'm not sure if I was doing that before.

Open your Disk Management

Open your Disk Management window...that will usually cause a disk rescan & your Garmin drive will show itself.

If not, then go to the toolbar at the top of the Disk Management window, select Action/Rescan Disks. That will solve your problem if/when it happens again (assuming you don't have a bad usb cable).
