660 Power - Without FM Receiver

Can I wire my 660 direct into 12V - without using the FM receiver built into the 12v plug that it comes with ?

Power Plug Nuvi 600/700 series

When I am not using an FM or MSN receiver,I use a power plug that came with my 750. It fits the 600 series as well.

The car charger for the Nuvi 3xx series can be used in the usb port for the 600 series.

No

Not by just wiring 12v to the 660. The cigarette lighter/fm adapter outputs 5v, I believe.

hardwiring

SURE ! I'm having my 660 done MON. The installer just gets under the dash, connects an additional plug adaptor then you just plug into it. If you don't want to use the FM receiver just replace it with with a regular cig. lighter plug. I've been doing this with my radar detectors for 25 yrs. The best thing is that your installer can make the plug come out wherever you want, under the dash, between the seats or near the console. It's a very simple job for any installer. Good luck

Oops !

2 Comments here, back to back, is it a 12V, or a 5V ? I suspect it is 5V due to the USB.

OOPs is right!

I don't believe Beemer is really suggesting hardwiring to 12v -- I think he means he's adding a hidden 12v cigarette plug under the dash into which the adapter can be permanently placed.

Yeap, most radar detectors

Yeap, most radar detectors are straight 12v, so you can literally hardwire them to the 12v source, like him that is what I do.

Also, like him, I have installed a 12v female recepticle behind the bottom of the dashboard and just plug in my included adapter. Then tucked the wire in the molding.

12V

The part # of the 660 vehicle adaptor is the same as that for the C5xx (010-10747-03). Having dismantled the C5xx's, I can tell you there's not actually anything in it ... it's literally just an adaptor.

Phil,
I'm really confused. If you are saying that the unit will accept anything from 5v from a USB cable to the 14v that can be present when connected directly to a car battery, why have you been suggesting in another thread that external battery packs plugged in via mini usb plugs need to regulate the voltage down to 5v, utilizing such things as zener diodes? What am I missing?

smile There's a few different adaptors & connectors in use by the different models.

I think...

The Nüvi 6xx (and 7xx?) have this straight-through adaptor, that goes to a cradle. The C5xx has the same adaptor, that connects directly to the unit. All 3 ranges also have a mini-usb plug on the side. So they will charge (slowly) from std USB, or quickly from their cradle 12V input.

The Nüvi 3xx range has a mini-sub on a cradle and a mini-sub on the unit - but draws a lot more current from the cradle (>500mA). Again they will charge slowly from std USB (plugged in the unit), or quickly from proper adaptor plugged into cradle. (Plugging std USB in cradle, when battery is flat, results in instant BATTERY CHARGING COMPLETE message!)

The Nüvi 2xx has a 'cradle' (but no connector) - just the mini-usb on the unit itself.

Corrections welcome though.

Ouch!

redface I never dreamed that certain of the units would have two different input voltages, depending upon the port used for charging. I stand corrected and apologize to gmctoyman for providing bad advice.

Yeah, they should keep all

Yeah, they should keep all the series the same. In other words, if the c3xx has an input in the cradle, so should the rest of the cxxx series. Same with the nuvis, cause some have one and some have two.
