i seen a lot of forums on dear batteries and how to replace them but what i havent heard of is if the battery is dead and will no longer hold a charge will it work with it plugged in?seems to me that it would

To answer your question, yes it would. The battery is just a secondary source of power, through which the unit doesn't pull current when it's flowing from the car's twelve-volt outlet. The state of the battery is irrelevent so long as the GPS is plugged in.
