MSN Direct

I asked a customer service rep from Garmin if the 760 will be at all compatible with MSN Direct v2. I just got MSN Direct v1 over Christmas with my 760. Here was the response.

Dear Sir,

The MSN V2 may work in the future with the Nuvi 760. As of right now it does not work. As the new MSN V2 comes out in the coming months compatability with the Nuvi 760 may be something that could be added in the future. I would recommend checking back in the upcoming months.

I doubt it will ever be compatible, but I was very impressed with the timeliness of the customer service rep getting back with me. I sent a message on Friday, late afternoon. He sent me a message later on Friday, stating her would check on it and would get back with me on Monday. Well, he sent me a message at 6:15am this morning, letting me know what tech support had told him.

May not be what I wanted to hear, darn the luck, but they have always gotten back with me in a very timely manner. I alwaus had my questions answered quickly.

Just Last week

I bought an MSN Reciever last week ($93.50 on Amazon) for my Nuvi 750 and after running the upgrade on webupdater I receive all the v2 services.

msn on 760

Does that mean that even with the purchase of the MSN reciever the 760 does not have the full MSN V2 functionality

According To Garmin

Garmin told me that all the 7xx series was compatible w/ v2. As to the upset 6xx series owners, I feel your pain, but your units are 2 generations old, and from the posts I have read many purchased their 6xx series after the 7xx series was released b/c they were taking advantage of the price reductions. It sort of a darned if you do and darned if you don't thing, if you are an early adopter you deal with the intial debugging, while if you choose to take advasntage of lower prices you face your unit becoming outdated soooner. If Garmin just kept updating older units with the new features they would be out of business at some point. They must keep adding feature to keep up with the competition, and like all tech toys they depend on users upgrading at somee point.

I agree. The weather is

I agree. The weather is nice, too. It's nice to see the 3 day forecast.

MSn Direct Receiver

How does one know which version of MSN Direct Receiver he has? I cannot find anything either on the receiver itself or the Nuvi 770 I own.

If you just have 4 icons,

If you just have 4 icons, you have version 1. If you have a 7xx series, simply go to web updater and you can download the software to get the v2 enhancements.

When you go to web updater, it may say that you have the most current firmware. Then, click NEXT and click on the MSN update.

You have to have the MSN receiver first and hook it up to your GPSr otherwise you won't have MSN.

MSN V2 on 760

Can anyone confirm what comes with the 760 if you buy the MSN reciever. Do you get the free year like with the 680?

You buy the MSN receiver for

You buy the MSN receiver for $124.99 and it comes with a year of use. When I went online to register my MSN receiver, I had the option of purchasing another 6 months for only $9.99, so I got 18 months for about $135. After the 18 months are over, you can either sign up for another year at $49.95 or buy a lifetime subscription for $129.99.

When you get the MSN, go to webupdater and download the MSN v2 software.

Life is full of trade-offs and compromise. I have a gadget problem, but don't go to the meetings. If I get a new model when it is released, my past models have greater resale value. It's a choice I get to make and am glad that Garmin is still improving and adding features.

TMC vs MSN Traffic

If you have tried both services, do you find one is better/more up-to-date than the other? I have TMC on my 660, and notice aprox 15 minutes lag time between what is being reported and the actual road conditions. Google Maps' Traffic on my cellphone seems to be more up-to-date.

I have personally been happy

I have personally been happy with MSN. I have noticed it takes MSN a little longer to boot up when I first turn my GPSr on, but other than that, it has worked very well. I don't use it for traffic very often, but it has always worked when I needed it to. The sports radio station I listen to has traffic reports all the time, too, so I am always covered.

I use the MSN for the other features. It gives me a 3 day forecast, my wife and daughter love to use it on weekends to see where certain movies are playing and at what times, I like to see what gas prices are looking like in the area (I also realize that even if there were a .10 difference, I would only save $1.50 on a tankfull, but it's still a nice feature.). I don't use it much for the stocks, but I do like it in the mornings to get news headlines. I do really like the Web Favorites which allows me to go to maps.live.com and send addresses to my GPSr from a computer. You just need a hotmail.com email address, but it is free. I use this feature a lot!

Works with 760

I got a 760 in November and just recently purchased the MSN direct receiver because it seemed like it had more available than the TMC receiver that came with the product. The receiver came with v1 but I updated my unit via Garmin Web updater (v2.6) and when I did it also allowed me to update the unit to accommodate MSN direct v2.1. When I connected the Nuvi to the receiver it then updated it to the latest version. I live in Houston and I have access to all the features of the new version.
