FAQ regarding how to update files already on the site.

I have made a new FAQ that I would like everyone to take a look at. I have had some concerns lately regarding this topic and thought that it was time to clarify the process so that we don't have a big mess later.

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/9040

When a file comes through the Moderation queue it goes through a cleaning process, I don't email you and let you know if your file was perfect or if it had problems. If it just had a negative mark missing or some other typo I just make the change and put the file up on the site.

If there is a problem with the order of things I will usually send a note with an attached FAQ regarding the CSV file format that is accepted here.

So it dawned on me the other day that there is a chance that someone who had uploaded a file with a typo in it not realizing it could make and addition to their file and then just use the edit feature to upload their updated file. In this case it does not come through the moderation queue and I don't get a second chance to make the correction.

If you are making a change to one of your files, please download the file from the site and work from that copy please.

Miss POI

sounds good

However, what is the diference if I have a duplicate of the file I previously uploaded to POI-FACTORY on my computer (which I would edit before uploading again.

I have always edited the dupe file and then uploaded the edited file (overwriting the file on POI-FACTORY).

All my files have passed the error checking process grin

It seems the same to me - am I missing something?

it's not multiple copies of the file

While it sounds good, I for one probably wouldn't put my files for POI online. Once the file is online, all control is lost to whomever has access. While having many have the ability to update, which relieves some burden, control over how the data is presented, strict formatting requirements and the quality of the data is lost.

With google docs Editing access is still limited to named individual(s), but it can be several and its real-time to avoid multiple copies.

It's not multiple copies of the file as much as the integrity of the data within the file that is my concern. I impose some fairly stringent standards on my data which I can't necessarily impose on others. Some files I maintain like the BBQ one don't have a strict a standard as input is from other users. I do verify there are no duplicates, but as to requiring specific elements, that can't be done.

Multi poi files in one folder

I'm working on my first poi file to be posted on this site. I have some experience making them, but this will be the first to be submitted.

I would like to have multiple files in one folder. I'm working on a kosher food file, and I would like to have every state in a different file, and then all states in one folder. That way you only have to download one folder, and then you'll have the option to look for them by state.

Does this make any sense to anyone? How can I upload it?

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to ask this question, but it looked like the closest match to me.

Thanks,
Shlomie

there are two

There are already 2 files for Kosher locations on the site found by going to POI Files and then searching for POI with KOSHER in the title. So,some of your work may duplicate work done by others, but the additional entries will be good. As to your suggested file system, my understanding is it won't work on POI-Factory due to the site software limitations. I haven't seen an ability to download folders.

I think you will have the same issues Mahoney has with some of his files. McDonalds, as an example has over 16,000 locations and is found in one file. If someone wants less than all the US/Canadian locations, they can easily edit the file as it is sorted by state then province. This might bethe better solution for you as well. One file with all the locations rather than 52 files - one for each state and the District plus the combined. Updating the files on POI-Factory would also be a lot of work for you.

Thanks

Sorry, I didn't check first. When I started the project, there was only one of them, and that person never replied to my messages.

I am lost ---- re poi updates

I tried a couple of times to update a POI but it never gets posted. I guess I am missing something in the procedure.
I had an addition to the Rest Area file. I added it and uploaded it and it said it got posted but..... was I suppose to do something else???

If the file is maintained by an active member, you email them with the update. For Rest Areas click on MrKenFL's name and send him a private message with the update information

POI updates

I don't see in your user account:

http://www.poi-factory.com/user/221420

that you are the maintainer of any existing POI files so I'll assume that you're trying to send an update to MrKenFL's Rest Areas Combined file:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6643

To offer an update to an existing file, contact the maintainer (at the top of the POI file's page: "Submitted by MrKenFL") and click the maintainer's name to go to his account, then press the Contact tab to send him a personal email with your info. He will then add your revision for the next version of the file.

If the maintainer doesn't respond (there are orphan files no longer maintained by the original submitter), then contact JM or GlobeTurtle at:

http://www.poi-factory.com/contact

and they will make your revisions.

The only time you can directly update a POI file is if you submit a new POI file and it's accepted and posted by The Factory.

Or..

The POI's I've submitted are GPX's. Then I noticed the POI's by others are mostly CSV's. Not a big deal because they both run in the GPS. Then I noticed that I cannot load a CSV into EPOIE.
If I adopt a POI that's a CSV what do I use to edit, or convert it?

I suspect "EPOIE" is EPE ?

Extra poi editor (EPE) will accept a multitude of file types that you can use and convert to gpx or anything else.
You can edit csv with and editor or excel.

maybe

I've tried several csv files, they all report "Invalid CSV line" and goes on to state "POI on line 1 does not contain valid longitude and/or latitude: etc. If I "ignore or discard" the warning, it goes to the next entry with a similar warning. I've check a co-ordinate and it was correct.I haven't heard anything about E_POI_E. Maybe it isn't finished yet?

first things first

First things first. What program are you using to read CSV files? None of us in this forum have a clue on what epoie is or where you found it. If you can clear up that mystery, maybe we can be more help.

On the off chance you are using Extra_POI_Editor (EPE) then it is a configuration problem and you need to set up a profile in EPE to default for standard CSV files. The defaults are Latitude, Longitude, Poi Name and Description.

The second thing is which file or files are you trying to read? CSV files can be opened and edited with any text editor but are more easily manipulated with a spreadsheet program. Opening the CSV with one of these programs will tell you what is in line 1. Some files have a heading stating what the fields (columns in a spreadsheet) are.

I suspect

I suspect ipoie "might" be Extra_POI_Editor !

My mind works in strange circles !

ok

My apologies. I thought I saw Extra_POI_Editor labeled that way. I wasn't trying to be slick or start a new trend.
This being a little off topic I should have started a new post, too.

Ehh, six of one, half dozen of another on the new thread. Look at this tutorial as it will help you determine if you need to configure EPE differently.
