nuvi 360 shuts off randomly

i was using my nuvi 360 in my car w/o the unit plugged into the 12v outlet. after about 3-4 hours the unit suddenly shut off w/o warning. i figured maybe the battery died but it should have given me a low battery warning. i plugged the unit into the 12v cigarette lighter but the unit struggled to turn on. it would turn back on for about 10 seconds then shut off. then after many many attempts it finally stayed on but only for about 2-3 minutes.

is this a common problem? shouldn't the unit be able to power back on with the car charger? and shouldn't there be a low battery warning? i've only had my garmin for less than a month so i am concerned. i have not tried plugging the unit into my computer yet b/c i am out of town and did not bring all of the accessories.

please help!

If the 360 is like the 350

If the 360 is like the 350 (which I am sure it is in this issue), you don't get a low power warning sometimes. it just shuts off. If you been using it for 4 or so hours, your battery probably died. When the battery gets to a certain low point, you have to recharge it through the usb port, not the cig lighter. Don't ask me why cause I don't know the answer, but many ppl here have had the same issue.

May be a "normal" problem.

What's the expected battery life on that model?
Many are only good for 3-4 hours.

Is the low battery warning user selectable?

Once dead, it may take 10-20 minutes plugged in before it will run again (depends on the design of the power circuitry).

Do you still know where the User Manual is? wink

Yeah, I also meant to as

Yeah, I also meant to as ka1167 said, just cause it says (at least on my nuvi) that it has an 8 hr battery life, that isn't true. I get about 4-5 hrs worth. I am sure that you can get 8 if you have no backlight and don't play the sound.

i thought i've seen a low

i thought i've seen a low battery warning before. its disappointing to learn that the car adapter cannot charge the unit when the battery is at a low level. i will try leaving it in the cig. lighter for a while and try again.

if that doesnt work i will hook it up to my computer when i get back home.

thanks for the help!

Yeah, I agree, I don't care

Yeah, I agree, I don't care how low the battery may be, the cig lighter should make it run no matter what!

I always have my cig lighter adapter in, cause I never want to get in that suituation when I am lost...lol.

Same Issue

I've run into the same issue with my Garmin nuvi 350.
There are just times that it will shut down even if it is in the cig lighter.
Don't know what I can do about it.

My 350 shut off a couple times, too

Both times it was recalculating and just shut off. I emailed Garmin and they said to send it in and they would replace it. I only had it for about a week at that time and needed it for a trip so I figured I'd wait until after the trip and then send it in.

In the meantime, I did several things to it and it has not reset once in maybe 2 months now. Can't say for sure if either of those things fixed it or if it has just been behaving itself since then.

1) I upgraded from 4.90 to 5.0 and then to 5.20 firmware.
2) In fooling around with different vehicles, I discovered a built-in pointer that only shows if you delete all the other vehicles in the folder. So my vehicle folder is completely empty now.

At the time I thought it might have been a corrupt vehicle file since both times that it shut off, I had just turned off my route so the pointer/vehicle changed from pointing up to pointing right or left momentarily. And both times it crashed before it could redraw the screen with the new orientation after the turn.

So if you want to experiment, give those a try. Could be a coincidence or it might be a work around for a bug or some sort.

Battery Life

This is actually a sign of good engineering, not bad.

(Some assumptions here.....)
The unit is probably designed to shut off before the battery goes completely flat because that is hard on batteries. It is also probably also designed to NOT start up again until the battery has a certain minimum level of charge in it. Same as above, to extend battery life.

If you plug it in BEFORE it dies, there won't be a problem ! shock
