Greetings!

Greetings,

New to GPS, and I just joined here a few days ago. Still looking for a unit. Up until recently I didn't think I could really use one of these. I've done fine and have had a lot of fun with maps and trip books. A friend compelled me to try his NUVI 200 for a week or so and I'm pretty impressed. The only thing it doesn't do very well is pre-trip routing. My main need is POI data. We want to know where the food is ahead, rest areas, etc. The Next Exit book is great for that, but only on the Interstates. I've also been looking at the Tom Tom One, mostly for its routing capabilities. But in all other respects, the Nuvi seems to be a better buy, so that's where I'm leaning.

So, I have to give back the NUVI 200 this week, but in the meantime, I have downloaded a couple of POI files and tried them out. That rest area file is excellent. I'm starting to play with creating my own files in anticipation of buying my own unit. Hope to have something to share some time soon. That said, this is great web site and I've learned more about Garmin GPS from here than all other sources combined. I've already plugged poi-factory a couple of times on rv.net.

It's more spendy, but take a look at the Nüvi 760. It has the routing capabilities that the "lesser" Nüvis do not have.

Hi Chuck,

I don't know if you have seen this site, but it contains a wealth of information on selecting a GPS unit.

I looked at the 760, at almost $500 more I don't feel thats worth it. Most of the features that bring the cost up are useless to me. But I appreciate the suggestion!

Gymkep, I have looked at that site. It was somewhat helpful, somewhat not helpful. The detailed info about how things really work isn't there. Thats why I like to peruse message boards. People say whats on thier minds. EDIT: Oop, it wasn't that site after all. The one you cited is pretty good!

You can use Mapsource (available from Garmin, usually at no charge) to preplan your trips on the PC. You can create waypoints and download them to your GPSr as favorites. Do a search on Mapsource to see how others on this site have gone about approaching Garmin.
