Backlight Timeout on 660

To preserve some battery life I've set the backlight timeout to 1 minute.
This works really great on long interstate stretches (especially at night): the screen is almost dark but still readable.
The backlight automatically kicks back in when Jill has something to say to me and it stays on for 1 minute, long enough to take next turn; anything less than 1 min may darken the screen just before the turn... definitely not good!
Anyway, it seems that all good things are coming with a glitch - the backlight is NEVER turning off when my 660 is powered by the cigarette lighter! it stays on all the time...
I know, this is not impeding w/battery's life BUT I do find very annoying, when driving at night, having a bright spot (unit's screen), all the time, in front of my eyes.
Am I missing something? or shall we, the people, request a software update from Garmin?

I haven't played with the backlight timer yet. Can you set both intensities or is the off really off completely?

Garmin will never please all of us!

The Nüvi 310 does the same ... and I thought "Good, I like that - nice attention to detail" smile

Nuvi backlight / nighttime

There are a couple of things you can do to help ...

first, make sure that your Nuvi is in "night" mode - this can be done manually, or set to automatic (wrench / display / color mode). Certainly helps dim things down a bit. The daytime mode is way too bright when it's dark out!

second - you can allows adjust the brightness while driving a night.

off is off

As a general rule, the lower the intensity, the longer LCD's life span! thus I'm always setting the brightness to the lowest comfortable level (laptop, gps, monitor, etc).
In any LCD, the backlight is the one making the displayed information visible; so when the bulb is going south, the whole device is (usually) thrown away.
It's the same in our particular matter: backlight off means off! only in plain darkness - at night on the highway - the map still may be seen as a shadowy image on the screen, good enough though...

My setting is "automatic" and it's perfectly working but the difference between day/night is mostly the background color - white for day and black for night - thus reducing the brightness thru the coloring, NOT thru the backlight being on/off.
Of course, there's always the manual adjustment but don't feel quite comfortable fiddling while driving...

Thanks! :-)

Thanks! smile

Nighttime setting

true, but it's substantially better than the "daylight" setting. With the brightness turned down a bit, I do not find it to be a problem.

Why not run it on the charge

Why not run it on the charge cord? You do know you're shortening the life of the battery as they can only accept a finite amount of charge cycles.

You can independently set the day/night brightness. You do know you can turn the brightness all the way to 0%, which is the backlight shut off. It's still very readable and not too bright at all.

Perfectly true, no questions asked! and thanks all for the tips, but the whole point of my topic was "the-backlight-not-turning-off-while-fed-by-the-cigarette-lighter-is-a-general-behavior-or-not?"
According to Hornbyp, his 310 is doing the same... anybody else?

I believe, could be wrong

I believe, could be wrong (but doubt it...lol), that the reason they had that feature was to conserve battery life, hence, with it being feed from the lighter, you dont need to conserve the battery life.

Mine does the same thing. However, once you set the backlight to be all the way down (still viewable), it stays that way.

Nuvi 350 just dims

The Nuvi 350 sets the brightness to about level 4 besides just the changing the screen colors when it shifts to night mode. And the 'auto off' when running in battery mode doesn't actually shut off the screen, it just moves it down to the lowest possible brightness setting. I routinely manually adjust the brightness to suite my preference and how sunny a day it is outside. At night, I set the brightness to about 2 or 3.
