Garmin Nuvi 760

Just picked mine up today from Circus City. smile It is certainly different some I like some not a big deal. If you already have one of the 600's. You might want to wait and get some more opinions.

It does NOT support WAAS (even though a LOT of the on-line merchants claim it does). I am running it side by side with my 680 and will post more tomorrow or later this evening.

After you make a route

If you select the route, then edit, you will be given several choices, one of which is optimally reorder points, is this what you are referring to?

Save it, then edit

I am still getting used to my 760 and have not noticed the optimize route function when entering a route with several stops, where might I find this function?

You have to save it first. Then you can select it and select Edit. You can manually reorder the points or select the option to optimize the order.

The 760 doesn't recalculate on import

Motorcycle Mama wrote:

MapSource does not have an "Optimize Route" function. You must do it on the unit. My guess is that this is because the vast majority of Garmin units do not have this function AND they recalculate the route upon import.

My 760 doesn't recalculate the route upon import. It imports it and runs it exactly as laid out in MapSource. I would be unhappy if after laying out a route it was changed on the Nuvi when imported.

.

Yes, the 7xx series and the Zumo series (and perhaps the new 8xx series) don't change the route, but all other units that support stored routes recalculate the route upon import.

Love it. So classy in style.

Traffic Alert

Does the 760 have Free Traffic Alert with Ads?

Or does the 265wt?

@ trinipeng

In the US, the 760 includes a free traffic trial subscription for three months, after which it can be renewed for a lifetime subscription for $60. This paid-for subscription had NO ads.

The units that end in "T" (like the 265WT) come with free lifetime traffic but this service DOES contain pop-up ads which you can only see while stopped for over 10 seconds.

I've had my 760 for a few weeks now and love it. I just ordered the 765t....can't wait.

I think the Amazon deal

is still superior to Wall's mart cuz Wall's mart will have to charge you sales tax. Amazon does not and they have free shipping.

Just got the 760 as my first

Just got the 760 as my first GPS, pretty nice so far. I do hope they add lane assist next year once they don't need to push the new ones as hard though.

Lane

Your unit will never have lane assist added to it. If you want that feature you will have to upgrade to the 765.

WAAS

I am a new owner of the 750, which I am told is a 760 less the bluetooth and included traffic recvr, and When you are on the high density roadways in my area every bit of accuracy you can get is critical. We have express and local lanes with very different exits and I have had the experience with the 650 without WAAS on of it thinking I was in local when I was actually in express and as a result it kept giving me invalid exit info and after passing an exit it wanted me to take went into repeated "recalculating route". Also my understanding is that WAAS is used to compensate for the DoD deliberately introducing error into the GPS signals to prevent "them" from using it against "US".

Accuracy and Tech Support

I've had the 760 for a little over a week now. I have used the "where am I?" feature to save my home location (since our addressing is off on our roadway). Example: I've saved my location (stopped of course) at the entrance to my driveway at work and also at home. The next time I try and go from home to work or vice versa, it gets me to the turn into the driveway. However, it never fully realizes that I've "arrived" at the destination.

FM Transmitter (I use the audio out to casette feature mentioned)
When using this through my car stereo, the person says they can hear me fine but they hear their conversation too (tunnel effect?)
But, when I use the GPS for everything, I can still hear them but now they can't hear me very well.

Acquiring Satellites
Inside my work, no signal whatsoever and I'm on the top floor (2nd floor building)

Outside - the first few days it acquired satellites rather quickly (avg 30 seconds). When the temp went to 30's yesterday in Dallas, it has taken anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes to acquire satellites. Probably not weather related, might be just a coincidence)

Garmin Customer Service/Tech Support
I have to give them an A+. Contacted them by email twice and received a response back less than 6 hours both times. Both responses were real and not generic like most companies.
I also called on the phone once and after getting past the normal "press 1, press 3, etc.", I was talking to someone within about 30 seconds. They have been very helpful and polite.

sorry for the long post. Just my two cents worth.

Joe,

are you driving during this long acquisition delay? Did Garmin have any resolution?

Yes, Garmin support truly is top notch.

Thanks for sharing.

Try this 760 speedup

Try this to see if it returns your 760 boot up time to 10 seconds. When you get home, go to Tools, My Data and delete the Trip Log.

I have been noticing that my 760 boot up time gets longer every day and within a week it will be approaching 3-4 minutes. If I delete my Trip Log, the boot up time goes back to 10 seconds. This is with firmware 4.20. I'm not sure if this affects previous versions.

Joe, try this...

Rather then using the "where am I" feature for your driveway try setting it as your "Home." I don't know that it would be more or less accurate but that's what the "Home" button is for (or a place you go to frequently).

If you'll be using the Bluetooth phone function much get yourself a remote microphone. They're really inexpensive on eBay and plug right into a tiny audio port on the back of your cradle. That microphone will make you more understandable (as opposed to the built in mike on the GPS) and tends to reduce the echo effect a little for those you're speaking with. Unfortunately there's really no way to eliminate the echo since the person on the other line speaks, it takes a fraction of a second for the signal to travel to your location then it goes through your phone to the GPS then to speakers in your car where it's picked up by your microphone to begin a journey back to the original sender. The only partial solution is to turn the volume down on your car radio (or whatever you're listening to the caller on) as much as practical.

GPS doesn't work well when you don't have a clear sky view. Even heavy leaves in a tree can have some effect so it's no surprise you can't navigate inside your building. Someday just for grins and giggles walk around with the unit in your hand and watch the GPS signal strength (press and hold the bars in the upper left of your main screen). As you walk around go indoors and out, under tree cover etc. You'll even notice a big difference if you stand close to the north side of a building.

X1 on Garmin service. They're great.

Can't help with the delay issue except that I use a remote antenna in the car (plugs right into the back of the GPS) which can make a HUGE difference both in acquisition time and accuracy. You can get them the same places as the remote microphones on eBay.

Cheers wink

satellite acquisition and bluetooth echo

uber360 wrote:

I was sitting still with a clear view of the sky. Another time, I gave up and after I started driving, it acquired the satellites faster.

johnc - this helped a little bit but it's still sluggish on acquiring the signals. Thanks!

John L - I'm going to look into both of these. Probably the antenna more than the mic. I'm not sure I'll use the bluetooth feature that much now.

Thanks to all of you with your responses. I'm normally not a forum person but I'm getting a lot of valuable info from the POI forums. Thanks!

Trip Log affects "Loading Maps" only

joe38 wrote:

My trick only gets you through the bootup "Loading Maps" portion more quickly and to the main menu. I did not mean to imply that it would affect satellite acquisition.

What will help a little with satellite acquisition is:
1. Turn it off when you are parked.
2. Turn it on in the exact same spot and do not move until it gets at least one green bar of sat signal.

If you move significantly before it finds the satellites, it always takes a much longer time because it might have to download the ephemeris data first.

Geocaching with the 760

Has anyone geocached with the 760? Any tips or tricks?

Geocaching

I "normally" use my 76CSx for geocaching but, when I'm at work, I don't usually have that unit with me. I've used the nüvi macro in conjunction with GSAK with my 760 and had excellent results. No arrow screen of course but coordinate matching works fine. I love the fact that the macro gives me ALL of the cache info right on the unit. It's plenty accurate enough to take me right to the cache. I haven't had any problems using it for geocaching at all.
