The above link goes to a local (Richmond, VA) news website and if you scroll down a bit, you will see a picture of a GPS, click on it.
They are cracking down on the placement of GPS and whether or not it obstructs the driver's view. A bunch of BS in my opinion. I guess that it is best to have it mounted on the blue tint of your windshield on the far left. Won't obstruct unless you are looking for planes.
You are right
You are correct. There is a check mark in the "Remove" box for Windshield, and he wrote in "GPS Holder," I think, or something like that. While the brakes passed, he indicated they were close and even wrote that on the slip. It still passed, but as you point out, I guess they have to note these things. How do the vent mounts work? That might be a better option. Is there a good generic vent mount, or should I get one from Garmin? I have a 765.
lucky me
I'm glad we no longer live in a police state, as a former resident of PA for 22 years I know what the people in VA and CA have to go through.
I love the Sunshine State...

I would still call the state police barracks for a clarification, or just remove it when you go in for an inspection.
Don't know about vent moumts. Although my wife is happy with her XM radio vent mount.
Lots of folks here like the Garmin Beanbag mount. The GPS "Evidence" is easily removed from sight when parking. Plus you can switch vehicles easily.

Let's paint our EZ pass Black
The woman at the toll center in MD told me I couldn't mount my EZ pass up top in the shaded area. It had to be mounted even or below my mirror so the signal isn't blocked. Painting it black should drive the VA cops nuts. Maybe that's why they are white. But they do block your view. Laws and common sense don't belong in the same sentence. Kinda like military intelligence.

There doesn't seem to be any
There doesn't seem to be any clear cut rhyme or reason to any of the mounting positions for the gps units.
Lower right 7 inch square or lower left 5 inch square on windshield. Mount to dash in center. Mount permanent in this location or use bean bag mount. There are also some mounted on the windshield below the rear view mirror (not sure if this is legal).
I prefer the lower left corner by the pillar. Nothing is blocked. I can still see out that area and also through the side window. When my company mounted it in the middle fixed to the dash I removed it. I found I was turning and moving my head to much to "see around it".

VA is for Lovers (and Losers too)
Well, I am in VA every week. And I have to say that any state legislature that proposed a $5000.00 ticket fine for speeding to raise revenue has got to have their collective head checked. Granted, that fine was repealed... but still its a stark difference when you enter Maryland on how you are treated. IMHO, VA spends way too much time trying to trick people into breaking the law versus trying to uphold it.
I have3 mine on the lower
I have3 mine on the lower left corner of my dash..
Show me .....
The money!
Just another 'tax'.
popups
Too many popups
Time is never wasted...It is improperly used .
how bout they..
How about they pay more attention to individuals driving drunk are driving recklessly then those mapping a location.
Driving Through VA this fall
Thanks for the information, I may be driving through VA this fall.
Don't Care?
How about they pay more attention to individuals driving drunk are driving recklessly then those mapping a location.
Maybe they don't care if they are drunk or dirving recklessly, as long as they don't have anything obstructing their view while they are doing it.
Garmin Nuvi 1690
LMAO!
"Bummer
Does that mean that I can't set my beer can on the dash of my truck anymore?"
Shouldn't have been drinking coffee when I read that one!

Oh come on.....
It would be nice if the gov't would just stop getting into every nook and cranny of our lives. I"m sure somebody will be saying "If it just saves one life its worth it." Or maybe "its for the children".
Arrgh.
this thread s going on 4 years old
and I haven't heard of another report of someone being issued a ticket or any reports about this since Asian Fire posted back in October 2007.
