Garmin suction cup won't hold

For approx. 3 months, the suction cup window mount worked fine for my Garmin 550. Now it holds for a few hours (more or less) and entire unit (Garmin and mount) falls to the floor of my car.

Is the mount worn and I need a new one, OR

I need to clean the window and or mount, wet the mount or other procedure? I was thinking of the dash mount but it's big and bulky to hide.

YES, I know I can experiment but I'd like to get other people's past experience and best solution.

clean

I simply clean my windshield first than if I don't have water handy, I use a tad bit of SPIT. yes, you've heard me right. I spit on my windshield. =)

I've never had a problem yet, keep in mind that you need to clean the windshield first. any layer of dirty film on your windshield will cause air sockets that will cause the suction cup not to hold. Worse case, you can purchase new suction cups at HD or Lowes

Hand Sanitizer

I use hand sanitizer with moisturizer. I clean the cup with warm soapy water and dry it with a lint free towel. I then apply a little sanitizer to the cup. Of course I keep the windshield clean with Windex. I have had excellent results.

Suction Cup

I read somewhere on this site to put a little chapstick on the suction cup to make it hold and more important make it release after sitting in the sun. This works great and I've never had it fall off.

Garmin Suction Cup

I just got off the phone with Garmin and we discussed this problem. They are sending me a bean bag type of mount and claim that I will love it. Though I bought my unit four months ago, I told them I had problems all along and I am not being charged. Historically, I had occasional problems with my previous Garmin. I kept a bottle of isopropyl alcohol (buy it in any drug store, choosing one with the highest alcohol content) and three inch gauze pads individually wrapped (found in the Band-aid isle). I cleaned my window with the alcohol and gauze where the mount was to stick and this helped considerably. I hope that you find this of assistance. Good luck.

Bean Bag

Unfortunately I had to pay for my bean bag but just love it and would not use anything else

Bean bag

Plus, bean bag use is a must in certain states (e.g. CA)

Bean bag mount is the way to

Bean bag mount is the way to go if you ask me. They work wonderfully, plus it is easy to hide your unit when you leave your car, and not have to worry about a bad guy seeing the circle of the suction mount and wondering if it is worth it to inspect your car for you.

Garmin Suction Cup Won't Hold

Check out the Mount Guys at www.mountguys.com. They have many options for mounting your Garmin. I got tired of windshield mount and bought several vent mounts. Also, the windshield mount is a dead giveaway that you have a GPS

What I did

I think we all have this question. I did last week and after reading the forums I ordered the following:Portable Friction Mount for nuvi/StreetPilot C5xx (GRMA006)

http://www.provantage.com/

They were the cheapest on the product.

I'll post and let you know how it works.

My suction cup holds well

I live in South Florida and, believe me, it's hot here.
Using the suction cup, I attach my GPSr to the small aluminum of my CD compartment and up to now it's working well. I have a Honda Accord.

Any bean bags designed for the Nuvi ?

In other threads I have mentioned that I never remove the windshield mount and have not had any problem with break-in attempts.

Today after becoming very annoyed at the reflection problem I was having I decided to remove the mount and try a different location. To my great surprise the mount would not come off the window unless I applied a great deal of force on the rubber pull tab. It did come off, however it left a major portion of rubber on the window, and would not remount in any way to any location. I called Garmin when I got to my office, in less that 10 minutes the CS rep had all my information and is sending out a new mount for the NUVI 350. I am extremely happy once again with Garmin CS. Now I just wish I did not have to mount and unmount the cradle because Garmin said it is not to be left on the window for prolonged periods of time. This has become real pain in the butt.

Are there bean bags designed for the NUVI series ?

My 2 Cents

I noticed that the only time I have problems with the suction cup is in extreme hit. Hot summer days with the sun beating down on it and the suction cup gives up in a few hours. Other then those hot days, I have to pry the darn thing off the windshield. lol

Garmin had a problem with the rubber compound on the earlier mounts; and they replace the mount FREE if you contact them and yours fits into this group. They replaced mine and I've had extremely good luck since.

Same problem with my C330. The thing just weighs too much. Finally returned it and upgraded to a Nuvi 360 and have not had a problem since.

I decided to order this https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=8100
from Amazon and I will report back when I get it in about 10 days

Re: Solving The Problem

Double Tap,

I ordered the same Garmin Portable friction mount (bean bag) from Amazon when I ordered my 350 from them.

I love it! Put it up on the dash when I need, snap in the 350 and I'm go to go. When finished, unsnap the 350, put the bean bag on the floor and no one ever knows it was there - out of sight, out of mind - no temptation for the no-good-niks.

It absolutely doesn't move while on the dash. Other than the weight itself, the bag is made of some kind of of non-slippery material.

Another advantage of the bean bag is lack of glare. Just tilt your nuvi down a little bit (or side-to-side) and the glare is gone without you having to move the bag at all.

I think you'll like it.

mount would not come off the window

Try lifting the edge of the suction cup with your fingernail, or other very thin object.
This will break the suction, and the mount will come off immediately.
Hope this helps.
