GPS theft

There was an article in the local newspaper this week, about GPS thefts from cars. It isn't enough to remove your GPS from sight. If a thief sees the mounting bracket, they break in and look for what was connected to it. The article also said the some police are giving out free microfibre cloths to clean the window after you remove the mount from the windshield. If a thief sees the ring on the window, he might start looking for what was there. It takes a lot to hide your electronics from some people.

I put my in a Camera bag,and take it with me.Been taking out of the Car the second day I had the GPS.
My wife showed me the article.
My heart would be to my feet if my was taken,so I just put it in the bag.Doesn't take long to do it,and it's worth it taking it out of the car with me.

Hiding your GPS

I keep mine on a weighted mount that sits on the dash. Makes it easy to move from car to car and leaves no evidence on the windshield.

Also, as I reach my destination, I take it off the dash and set it on the passenger seat or in my lap before pulling into a parking lot. That way no one sees that it is in there as I park. Then I either stow it out of sight or take it with me in a carrying case.

can,t do

I put my Garmin #7200 In my handgun case without the handgun or course. Its about the size of a womans small pocket book. It goes wherever I go. Its the mount for the#7200 that bothers me. It,s glued on the dashboard with some type of adhesive that came with the mount. I could pry it off but then It would never stick again.I get quite a few coments when I go into the stores with my wife carry the case from "You can always tell a man with money" to " whats he got in the bag".

How I deter theives

I often get unsolicited offers to buy my car and if I left it in certain places it would other wise be gone. So any sort of electronics like a GPS are even more of a Target. That's why I have a concealed alarm system installed with four air sirens and it even has it own battery backup system in case the thief were to cut the battery cable. It has been broken into four or five times with the result the thieves being very surprised and fleeing leaving the door ajar. It not your typical wimpy alarm that people ignore. When this one goes off, it draws attention a mile away and it not fun being close to it either. I actually look forward to it being broken into.

In my waist band.

I always carry my 9mm in the small of my back under my sweat shirt. The gun case is for the GPS which is not going to help me "IN CASE" And your right about an armed society! Up in New York only the bad guys have guns because of the liberal politicians. Here in Virginia almost everybody has a gun in their house or car, and half of them have concealed carry permits if not more!

window marks

I just joined the site and i see a lot of good info on it for the gps, I recently got a garmin C530 and use it a lot, the car i got has the large dash and hard to get to the gps if it is suctioned cupped on, so i did some shopping and found a beanbag mount for it, about 40.00 at circuit city, and it works great,so far no complaints on it staying in place or slidding around.

I do the same, and no problems so far, and I live in an urban area where thefts are pretty common.

I highly suggest the weighted mounts.

A very Good spot

That is my favorite carry place also, the only down side if you fall on your back it is possible to crack a vertebrate or bruise a kidney. Oh how I wish we had some politicians here in NYC with only half a brain instead of all the ones we have without any brain at all.

By the way, I leave the mount attached to the windshield and just put the NUVI in my brief case or put it in the console. I think if I was going to an unsavory area I would take the suction cup off and use my GMC Jimmy instead of my Jaguar.

Scooter, I didn't know that

Scooter, I didn't know that you lived in VA! Where abouts?

I rather carry a GPSr then a 9mm, at least I can find my way home. Currently, I have little need for a pistol. I had to get rid of all my guns when I married and had a kid anyways, but I do miss my 9mm, black powder rifle, and 22 pistol. Wife hates guns.

Friction Mount

After reading numerous articles about GPS theft, and the fact that I don't like the suction cup mount, I ordered the friction mount for both my GPSr and my wife's GPSr from TigerGPS. I have read very good reviews on both and hope that this is the appropriate deterrent for a thief! Outta sight, outta mind, I hope!

New York City

Well, living in NYC and not owning or planning to own a gun, I have had to take my GPS with me every time and remove any signs of it's existence. I have activated the lock on my Garmin 350 which I guess will make it useless for the thief but it is obviously not going to deter them. Does anyone know if the security lock can be broken into without sending it to Garmin?

BK

I asked garmin about that

I asked garmin about that and they said the only way is to try every number combination which i guess is only 9999 numbers. Even if the unit gets sent to garmin the will send you a different unit IF it is registered in your name, then they have to send it to japan or somewhere in that area to get it unlocked.

It's not for me to tell you what to do, however

It's not for me to tell you what to do, however I live in Queens NYC, park on the street a great deal of the time and I drive a Jaguar. I hope I am not giving my self the Eyn Hara, but I have not had any problems leaving the mount on the windshield 98% of the time. The other 2% of the time discretion is the better part of valor.
