Very cool, I can finally update my Garmin after a few years.

Now where did i put my garmin...........?

Found it.

GE installed just fine to windows11 lite (https://www.tomshardware.com/news/tiny11-core-shrinks-window...). Entire install through the vm took ~15 minutes.

Now need to find my converter script so mapsource can use 'em.

Tomorrow I will drive for a

Tomorrow I will drive for a business trip. This evening, I just hooked the GPS to PC and found the new update. It feels good to have a map update.

POIs are Slow to Update

I just updated to the new maps. I noticed that Bed Bath and Beyond locations still come up when I search for locations. How long does it take for the maps to remove closed locations?

Takes forever or never

I still see all the Sears locations here and they all closed from 2014-2018. If they do get deleted, it would take a very long time.

Same question would go towards how long does it take for maps to get updates for new areas. As I mentioned in the other thread, my wife’s Dr’s office address still does not show up and he’s been there for 4 years.

Update failed, then succeeded

I just updated my Drivesmart 55 LMT with a Windows 10 laptop. The first 3 times the update failed at about 93% during the stage which copies the files to the GPS. I read on Garmin's site that running Garmin Express in Administrator mode sometimes works, and while I was dubious on the prospect, it worked.

I hope with this new update the GPS will finally stop sending me on dirt roads when I ask it not to, but what are the chances of that?

You can make yourself the administrator

For the machine you can make yourself the administrator or set Express.exe to always run under administrator rights.

Naivigate to the Garmin Express folder. It should be found at C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\Express. Scroll down and find Express.exe, the executable. Right click the file, chose Properties, then chose the Compatibility tab. Down near the bottom is an option reading “Run this program as an administrator”. Enable that option and use “OK” to exit all the way out.

I guess updates are hit or miss.

I guess it is hit or miss. When the NY Interstate Exit numbers were renumbered it took about a year for the new exit numbers to show. Updates are slow, if ever.

Thanks

Thanks for the heads up on the new map. Haven't used my Garmins in a few years but I like to keep them up to date.

finally

Just in time for Thanksgiving

Did not have GPS ON when I

Did not have GPS ON when I passed Catamount Drive on US276 Today, but I see that farmer/cattle rancher has cut down the street sign for it on the state roadway, and either piles of dirt or roadway was dug up there, too!
Looks like the intersection is being removed.
I’ll try to use GPS Next time I go to the dump by I40 toward home.

At last...

We've been waiting a long time for this one.

What's this file all about

I just installed 2024,20 and in the POI folder I found all of my personal POIs (...gci) and another file that I've never seen before:

USCanadaCyclopsSample.gci

Anyone know where that thing came from and why I might want it. Obviously I can rename or delete it, but I'm curious. Since it's in the POI folder it would become a part of my loaded POIs and I probably don't want that.

Phil

Something just dawned on me. Garmin Express during a new map install used to ask what part(s) of the map I want to install but I didn't this time. Has that question been gone for a while and I never caught that or did it ask me this time and I didn't catch it?

Did the install process ask you what part(s) of the U.S. and/or/ Canada you wanted to install?

Update on Catamount Drive

First: HEY GARMIN!! Catamount Drive is NOT PAVED! Had you got that right, my: “Ignore gravel roads” setting would work… BUT YOUR ERROR MAKES THIS MORE DANGEROUS!!
My comments about piles of gravel I saw last week: Farmer has since spread the gravel piles to get ~200’ into the cattle pasture, in order to get cattle feeding trailers into that pasture from US276.
From the point where new gravel stops, for about 200’ to the corral fence is all grass & mud (that corral fence is closed on both sides—Hey! It’s a cattle corral!).

So, my suggestion is: If you ever visit me, coming from I40, Don’t turn on Catamount Drive — You probably won’t make it to the end of the Catamount Drive, in order to be able to turn off of it!!

Just looked at the street view in Google Maps and Catamount Drive sures looks to be paved. Your link is CV off screen

Your link is off screen so couldn’t use it.
No — North Carolina
Off i40 exit 20 south on US276 about 4-5 miles.

Last time I looked at Google maps there were 2-3 cattle grazing on the road, and the cattle corral gates were easily seen.

NOW: IF GARMIN just changed the road to gravel….
This issue would go away! But they have this indicated as a Paved Road! If it was paved, he would not be spreading gravel on it!

On my phone Google Maps says it is:
(35.5675226, -83.0192597)

But not listed as Catamount drive, (As Garmin does) but shows it plainly as a gravel road into a pasture. Old pix, better fence now at both pasture and corral.

Report the error to Garmin

JanJ wrote:

Complaining here does nothing other than provide an emotional release. Report the error or issue with the map direct to Garmin if you have not done so already. Not that they'll be jumping right on it any time soon. They get their mapping data from other parties who may or may not be using the latest up to date map information or data.

Emotional release.

Tried to report it twice.
Fails to go through each time. With all the time that transpires between map updates you’d think they’d be more responsive. But no….

A Gravel Road For Sure

The coordinates of (35.5675226, -83.0192597), definitely shows a gravel road in Google Earth.

Road doesn't seem to be Catamount Rd

I also note that those coordinates show an unnamed road intersecting with Rt. 276 (Jonathan Creek Creek). Nothing in the area seems to be named Catamount Rd.

On Mapquest it does show a 1 Catamount Drive at those coordinates:
Mapquest link

Google Maps while it shows some sort of a road in map view, and a dirt road into a field on satellite view, it doesn't list it as Catamount.
Google maps link

Bing maps doesn't even show a road/dirt trail there, just a dotted line from the Johnathon Creek Rd to Grindstone Rd.
Bing link

Google street view (image from July 2023) of those coordinates just shows a dirt road there with no street sign.

That isn't new and isn't related to the map update. Devices from roughly 2014 to present all have the street on the bottom line.

where is the actual download link?

If you have an eligible device

drbeede wrote:

If you have an eligible device (“Lifetime Maps”) for a free download, connect your device to a PC or Mac and open Garmin Express. You should be prompted to update (if needed). If you aren’t eligible you’ll have to purchase the map at https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/1456.

Before purchasing, be absolutely certain the map is compatible with your device and it is indeed what you desire.
