GE in Task Scheduler again!

After this last GE update (17.20.1.0) I checked two things. In Garmin settings the setting "Launch Garmin Express when your computer starts up" was disabled, as I prefer it and how I have had it set in the past.

However, I noticed that the task to open Garmin Express and check for updates was again added to my Task Scheduler. The task, called GarminUpdaterTask, runs daily at 2:00 AM or when you turn on your PC anytime after 2:00 AM. When those tasks run they write a small file at C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Logs\SelfUpdater. IMO you can safely remove or disable that task in Task Scheduler. I have also found that the files can be removed, not that they are large. As many here have pointed out, GE is not particularly good at cleaning up after itself.

Or

You can get this and be done with it. It has many uses, not just for GE.

Interesting.

On my Win 11 Home system, the task GarminUpdaterTask (C:Program Files (x86)GarminExpress SelfUpdaterExpressSelfUpdater.exe) is disabled. Yet in the C:ProgramDataGarminLogsSelfUpdater directory there is a file with todays date on it titled: ExpressSelfUpdater.log

Contents of the file are:
2024-03-07 05:52:58.4177 | 1 | I | Running scheduled Express Update task
2024-03-07 05:52:58.4417 | 1 | I | Express Path: C:Program Files (x86)GarminExpressExpress.exe
2024-03-07 05:52:58.4417 | 1 | I | Express version: 7.20.1.0
2024-03-07 05:53:00.2587 | 1 | I | Sending application update request
2024-03-07 05:53:00.3357 | 1 | I | No required updates found. Exiting.

Looked at my Task Scheduler and there is no entry for Garmin. Same with using the Autoruns program. No entry for Garmin.

Will need to look deeper to see where that task is being scheduled.

Edit to add: Also the option to keep Garmin running in the background is unchecked in Garmin Express on my system.

delete

Delete those log files...all of them in C:ProgramDataGarminLogsExpress
Then open GE. You'll see two new ones being created. Every time you open GE they create two new ones. Once in a while it will create your ExpressSelfUpdater.log. GE automatically checks for an update sometimes, but only when you open the program.
