strange discounts

I signed up for Upside, because I wanted to get a 30 cent/gal gas discount blah blah blah here in PA.

But it also had restaurant and supermarket discounts of 5% and 6%, plus another $10 bonus.

The thing is usually these apps offer discounts on merchants who are hurting. Coincidentally, our favorite restaurant (it's like an episode of Cheers where the GM greets us and talks to us like they did in the 80's) is one that has a 5% discount, and there is a grocery store too that does 6%.

Simply collect the above rebates and once over $10, redeem to checking account.

Throughout all of the above, for some really unknown reason, there is also a 5% Groupon credit on my CC statement, and I have no idea why. It happened 3X at the above restaurant.

I mean to get ~ $3 discount, twice, on a $50 restaurant bill why not, but it's strange to get a discount and have no idea why.

There's another restaurant that's another one of our faves, where the payment device they have has an app called Toast. By linking my email. that too awards $5 for every $100 spent. These strange discounts add up over time. Again, why not save $3, or $5, if there's not really anything that needs to be done to get them.

One time such a discount popped up when I checked in on Yelp, and they gave me a hard time about it. I said if you don't want to accept it no biggie and never went back. I opted not to slam them on Yelp, let someone else do it lol

Upside is collecting and selling your info..

and that's how they can offer you discounts. They can track everywhere/business you go (or your phone) and sell/use the information to make money. It's no coincidence why you get certain discount offers. Depending on what permissions you gave them they can have access to all your location data, contacts and more. I find it's not worth it but to each their own. Many gas apps give a small discount and combined with credit cards that give 4%-5% discount on gas. Many credit cards give 3%-6% rebate on groceries nowadays and that can be added to savings with the stores app. Of course the stores loyalty programs/app use/sell your data as well.

Taking a look at the iOS settings:

location while using
camera
everything is on from Siri and Search
notifications are all on
background app refresh
cellular data

I get it--some look at a $50 restaurant check and say

1. What kind of restaurant is that in 2023 lol
2. Why in the world would you want $8 off, that's quite a price to pay for someone to know who you are

I look at it as if yes, I care about the money, and want to pay less if I can, and 2, I'm not doing anything illegal, if you know who I am it's ok.

Was this the forum where there was a concern with giving Sirius XM a credit card, because they will never stop charging you if you do? Can't remember, maybe it was another one
