Transfering POI

I recently updated my POIs and Red lights and speed traps but when I tried to transfer them from the computer to the GPS, it said unexpected error and would not complete the transfer. This was on my 2797. I tried 5 times..same result. HOWEVER, I did the same transfer from my computer to my DRIVESMART 65, it succeeded in transferring the files. How can this be? Ive changed nothing on my 2797. Any ideas?

Memory or cable?

The nuvi 2797 has less memory than the Drivesmart. Have you checked how much free space is left on the 2797?

The other thought is cables. Do both devices use the same USB cable, mini or micro, or do they use different cables? It could be a bad cable. The only other thing I'd consider first is a dirty USB socket on the 2797. Did the recent map update go well for both devices?

Memory or cable

I'll check the memory. That's a possibility. The cables are different but everything else works fine with the cable. Good suggestions. I'll check

memory or cable

Ive been able to determine that its not the cable..I tried 3 different ones. Its not the memory...I installed a different , larger memory card and i tried these from two different computers. same result...error in transferring. Dont know what else to check.

Try printing the file

Try printing the file and look for a funny record. Yeah, I know it works one place and not the other but there aren't many options left.

A workaround

It could be useful to learn the free memory in the 2797, not counting the free space on the SD card, then compare it to the size of the file created by POI Loader for your custom POIs with any embedded icons or audio alerts.

There is a solution for you. You can either copy the created gpi file from the DriveSmart to your computer, or have POI Loader create the gpi file on your computer rather than the 2797, then copy it. Then with the 2797 connected to the computer, paste the gpi file to the appropriate folder in the 2797. If the 2797 currently has your previous custom POIs installed, you may want to move or delete the old gpi file from the 2797 to avoid having duplicate POIs. I am assuming that you install all your custom POIs to a single gpi file. If you create custom POIs on your nuvi and DriveSmart with multiple gpi files with custom filenames, take care of what you're deleting, moving or copy/pasting.

One last benefit from trying to paste a file to the 2797 from your computer, PC or Mac, is that if the computer shows a file transfer error or failure, then it's not a POI Loader problem. An error would also indicate that your next map update to the nuvi device may have problems. Since you say you've ruled out the bad cable possibility,
then trying to clean the 2797's USB socket might be worth pursuing.

In rereading your original post, it may be that you're already running POI Loader to create the gpi file on the computer, then copy/pasting the file to your two devices. Am I correct that the error message is from your PC or Mac, and not from Garmin on either the nuvi or computer? If that's the case, what would happen if you ran POI Loader and directed the destination to be your connected 2797? A failure could be some hardware issue in the nuvi, and if not a dirty USB socket, it might be that the 2797 is toast.

I think you can run custom POIs from a properly named folder in your SD card in the nuvi. If pasting the file to the nuvi gives an error, try pasting it to the SD card.

You could try one other thing. Create some small text file on the computer and see if you can paste it to a folder in the 2797 without a file transfer error.

transfer files

I think I found the issue. I notice when in POI Loader, when I try to transfer to the NUVI 2797 , that file or destination is completely RED [ full], if i change the destination [in the pull down menu], to the [F] memory card in the 2797, it completes the transfer. Because the 8gb Nuvi internal card is full, it must go to the external 8gb card. I hope it transferred correctly. If there is a better solution, ie., deleting the existing internal 2797 card, so to keep the poi file in the internal card, please advise.

Internal memory full

If the internal storage of your nuvi 2797 is full or nearly full, it will eventually cause problems beyond just not being able to use POILoader to install custom POI files in internal storage. It would be worth your time to do some file cleanup in internal storage. There are FAQ's here on POI Factory that tell you what can be deleted and how to do it.

internal memory full

If the internal memory is full, use Garmin Express to update the map. While doing that, Garmin Express should use the SD card for part or all of the map, creating space in internal memory.

But be aware that Garmin Express waits until the last possible moment to use the SD card. Internal memory has to be almost entirely full.
