Lifetime Maps Update

I read through the license for the Lifetime Maps Updates and was surprised that a Garmin unit will lose its Lifetime Map License if it has been over 2 years since the last map update.
I found an old Garmin 2559 unit a few days ago. It needs a battery and I inquired with Garmin when my last update was and if my license had already expired. Garmin informed me that I would lose my license this December since my last update was December of 2020.
i am glad I found out because the Garmin unit would not have been worth repairing if the maps on it could not be updated.
I also have an old broken 1390LMT lying around somewhere. Now I know that when I find it, I will not be repairing it since it stopped working over 2 years ago.

Well, my 660 has had every

Well, my 660 has had every update, and instead of claiming I hadn’t updated it, they just created something in map update that would not work correctly on the 660! And when I reported that to Garmin, they said that flaw would not be fixed!
So much for lifetime map update!

(I plan on loading next map update on it anyway… Surmising that if they can inadvertently break it in one version…. They can inadvertently fix it in the next version!!!!!)

Lifetime

Garmin-nuvi-user, this has been discussed frequently here at the Factory for years, including links to the actual Garmin policy.

I know it's been Garmin's stated policy for a long time and that when calling Garmin Support, they'll repeat it, but I don't think I've ever read a report where someone's device was rejected for a map update. But then, those of us here tend to be those who look forward to each update and update in the first day or two of each release.

Has anyone here had a GPS that lost its lifetime updates or read of it happening?

https://www.garmin.com/en-US/legal/lmdisclaimer/

Garmin rep was not sure if policy was ever enforced.

The customer service rep that I chatted with was not aware of it happening to anyone. But stated it was the Garmin policy and could be enforced.

I think 2 years is for LMT

I think 2 years is for LMT devices only. If you purchased lifetime maps for a non-LMT device they don't expire in 2 years but don't know how long they have.

Map Update

I have a old 885T and was told by Garmin it's to old to update.

At least one guy reported

Interesting thread on this topic when the policy was initially instituted. See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/37418?page=1 but keep in mind the thread is about 10 years old so things may have changed..

If only your links work for browsers other than Chrome/Edge

Here's the content (NOTE: original thread from 2012)

dwalker content "24 Month Policy Got Me...
I realize my position is unique, however it does illustrate the 24 month clause can impact some. I helped my father-in-law in making a nuvi 780 purchase in 2009. He then purchased the lifetime maps update. Almost immediately, he became very ill and just recently passed away. He wanted me to have the 780. I knew he had the lifetime updates so when I went to update, well you already know the rest of that story. I own a 2595 but was going to give the 780 to my wife but with maps that are over 3 years old, not much point. I could purchase another lifetime update, but on a unit over 3 years old, again, not much point. I would have appreciated a longer-than-24-month policy. Too bad."

alandb content "Unregistering The Nuvi Kills The Lifetime Map Update
Another aspect of Garmin's new lifetime map update policy was recently discussed over on the gpspassion fourm. A member of that forum confirmed with Garmin support that unregistering a nuvi with a lifetime map subscription will cancel the subscription. So if a seller unregisters the product when it is sold, the new owner will NOT be able to update maps using the anonymous map update log in. In order to keep the lifetime map subscription in effect, the seller will need to maintain his original registration of the unit."

nüvi 760

I have two nüvi 760 units that I have updated over and over. The last update I did was a couple of months ago. No problems updating the maps.

How to map update a nuvi 8x5 series ...

Steve620 wrote:

What garmin told you is officially true, but unofficially it is still possible to update this series assuming you already have an active lifetime map subscription for the device. With the 2023.20 map the map size for full NA exceeded 4 GB, so Garmin split the full NA map into two files. They didn't enable the nuvi 8xx series devices to download both segments. I think part of the reason is that Garmin Express has never been able to automatically use the SD card on the 8xx nuvi series, and this series has quite limited internal memory. However with cloning, it has been possible to update the full NA map directly on a SD card, then add the large JCV file manually to the SD card (if you wanted it). But when the map split into two files with 2023.20, Garmin Express refused to download both files even with cloning. Then POI Factory member Baumback came up with a creative workaround for this problem. It requires a little work, but does allow you to update a 8x5 nuvi with the full NA map (both files) and the large JCV file.

So if your nuvi 885 has a lifetime map subscription, here are the links you need that explain the cloning method and Baumback's work around:

That's Bunk

It's not a Lifetime Map if they cut you off after two years of not updating (or any other restriction). If that happened to me, I would go to the Federal Trade Commission and to my local politicians (and theirs). If you advertise it as Lifetime, it darned well better be Lifetime. Else call it something else. My two cents.

Not bunk

Read the full terms at https://www.garmin.com/en-US/legal/lmdisclaimer/ and note maps are provided for the useful life of the device. Further, “useful life” is defined.

765i

I have an old NUVI 765i but haven't updated it in ages. I don't even know if it works anymore.

Give it a try

I'd like to hear if it was able to do a map update. (Tell us the current map update version too.)

Give it a god long charge…

Before attempting the update, leave the unit plugged into a regular USB changer for 12 to 16 hours. With doing that the unit might not even turn on becuase the battery charge state will be very low.

Lifetime Updates

I guess I better go thru all of my units and get them updated.

I just updated

everything a couple days ago. Lost track of the updates and didn't realize there were new maps. I'm updating five different Garmins with my oldest being a couple of 1450s.

I really like the Garmins with built-in WIFI. That really speeds up the entire process.
