What is everyones favorite POI file creation tool

I have been using the Extra POI Editor for years to create and edit my GPX POI files. Today, it finally seems to have stopped working correctly. I dropped back to an old version of Excel spreadsheet to make the CSV file, but I prefer the extra information I get with the GPX file. What is everyone's favorite editor to use to create GPX files? Thanks in advance

Extra_POI_Editor

I've been using Extra_POI_Editor for over ten years and it continues to work well for me.

Yes, mine has worked fine

Yes, mine has worked fine until this morning. When I tried to add some new POI's to an existing file, it would not bring up the entry screen. It created an error when trying to open the entry screen. I know after Google changed their maps, you had to manually enter the lat and long, but now you can't even get to the entry screen.

If running Windows

Since Extra POI Editor dates from about 2017 or earlier I would try running a compatibility check. To do this find the executable file and right click it, then if compatibility check is in the drop down, run it. If compatibility check isn’t listed but “troubleshooter” is, then run that and follow prompts.

After doing this, reboot and retest.

I've Been Using NoteTab Pro

I come from 39 years in IT, and I've come to love NoteTab Pro for all my editing. It handles HTML, all POI files, GPX, and a host of others. It has a price of $39.95.

I expect I'm the exception

I use Windows Notepad.

I like csv files since POI Factory has a file checker for uploaded files. My Wisconsin State Natural Areas file has 773 line entries with name, lat/long, and comments.

Just as an update,

Just as an update, apparently Google has made some changes again, as I am getting errors from Google maps as well as permissions errors. So apparently, Extra POI Editor has finally become a dead program to use. Guess I will play around with other editors to see if I can find a suitable POI editor. I know I can use the CSV file with Microsoft Excel, but not my favorite. I really liked the layout and entry screen on the Extra POI Editor.

I’d be suspucious of your PC

You’ve got two software packages giving you issues. Check the PC, don’t blame Google Maps, which millions likely use daily.

What version Windows are you running?

Gave Up

I gave up on EPE some time ago. Instead, I use Basecamp and Google Earth / Maps on a split screen. I let Basecamp create a .GPX or .GDB file which works for 90% of my needs.

On the rare occasion I need a .CSV file to use in Excel, I use one of the online converter programs like:

https://anyconv.com/gpx-to-csv-converter/

https://mygeodata.cloud/converter/gpx-to-csv

https://www.routeconverter.com/home/en

And many others.

Some are free and others charge a fee. I don't use them much and usually get by without cost.

Nothing wrong with my PC.

Nothing wrong with my PC. Maybe you should try to run it on your PC and see if it allows you to get to the POI creation screen. Google maps has already made it where you had to manually enter the lat and long when creating a new POI, and now apparently they have voided the certificate necessary to access Goggle maps from the program. They want developers to pay a fee to use the Google maps. I guess it is Basecamp and Excel going forward.

Your update

Hi NewJade

I'm using google mymaps and POI files. I am importing then with Excell with a CSV extension, and I have not seen any errors. I am wondering if I will start to see errors like you or are your errors related to POI Editor?
I have not looked into other editors and don't know anything about them...Yet.

Extra POI Editor

I've also been using Extra POI Editor for quite some time. I had a 'start up' problem crop up recently and after a lot of research found a solution here on POI-Factory - try holding down the shift key while you start EPE.

Microsoft notepad

I use notepad.. 20th century tool

Two different things?

I think people are talking about two different things here. A few posts ago the conversation was about Extra_POI_Editor, but then became about what we use to create a POI file from scratch. FWIW, I also use Notepad - I can't imagine anything easier than that to create a POI file. The only thing I use the EPE for is to convert .csv files to .GPX files, and for that it works just fine.
