Help with a Used Garmin I bought on Ebay

I fear I made a bad choice. Long story short, my cell phone's GPS is having issues and I decided to get a GPS specifically for my car.

To save cash, I bought a used Garmin Nuvi 2360LM off of an Ebay seller. I know it is an older model but I was reassured that although it is discontinued, Garmin still offers Lifetime Maps for it.

I wanted to download the latest map so I downloaded Garmin Express on to my Macbook Pro. My Macbook Pro will not recognize the Garmin when I plug it in with a USB cable. Doesn't show up on Finder. Garmin Express can't locate it either. And the Garmin Nuvi is fully charged. I tried using a different USB cable other than the one it came with as well. Still won't recognize the device.

Then I tried to locate the device via the Bluetooth on my Mac. It located the Garmin but then it could not connect to it. Under an Options tab I was prompted to enter a short code that would help the Bluetooth locate the GPS. It would have come with the Garmin Nuvi documentation but sadly I was not sent any documentation when I bought this from the Ebay seller.

I assume my last option is to purchase a Micro SD, download the latest map from Garmin Express, and then use the MicroSD to upload the latest map onto the Garmin Nuvi.

Any insights into my issues? Am I on the right track?

Perhaps another hurdle yet to come

Years ago I had my Garmin stolen, I reported it to Garmin and they informed me all they could do and would is "deactivate" the LMT feature meaning there would be no more updates. Not saying this will happen but stuff on eBay can be.. risky.

Latest on attempting to connect the Garmin Nuvi 2360LMT to a Mac

I received a Garmin data cable that I ordered. The box said "USB micro" which had me confused because I thought I had sought out a "USB Mini". Then I remembered that I specifically bought this cable because the Garmin website states that it is compatible with the model GPS I use. See link below if you are curious.

https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/67646/pn/010-11478-01#devices

I connected my GPS unit to my Mac and Garmin Express immediately came up. From that point on, the software searched for many seconds and then could not locate my Nuvi 2360LMT.

My Mac does not list my GPS unit as a device in Finder.

I will try my friend's PC next and if I can't update the map then back to the eBay seller it goes....

Just need to get places

Thanks for all that info. I could do without the traffic reports although that would have been nice.

Yes, I have used the device with its dated map and it worked ok considering.

For me, not being able to update the map will be the dealbreaker.

The mount I received from the seller (not the listing you provided) does not have the pins. The back of the device says it is a Nuvi 2360. The device itself has a socket.

It was advertised as a Nuvi 2360 LMT though. I hope that LMT part just got left off because I want my lifetime maps!

That helps a lot.

Here are some issues to consider. Your LMT 2360 means it has lifetime maps and lifetime traffic. But...!

Lifetime traffic requires a "cigarette lighter" power supply with the traffic receiver built into it and most likely, has to be plugged into the Garmin 2360 powered mount. You don't have a powered mount and it's not clear if you received the proper Garmin power supply, if any power supply. This isn't a big issue if you don't need traffic reports and especially true if you drive a lot outside of large cities since FM traffic is spotty at best.

Lifetime maps is another issue and that's why I asked earlier about the map version currently on your 2360. Garmin defines "lifetime" to mean that if your device has been in use and has not received a map update in 24 months or more, that it's beyond Garmin's definition of lifetime and they could prevent your device from receiving a map update. This has been discussed and I've never heard anyone state that Garmin prevented their device from getting a map update more than 24 months after its last update so it may not be an issue for you. But it's especially important to see what map version you have now and you should try ASAP to perform a map update.

Have you used your 2360 yet while on the road and creating a route to a destination? If so and if it works for you, great. On the other hand, if you find it lacking, you could look for a used (or even better, a Garmin Factory refurbished) newer model GPS with all the Garmin-supplied accessories. Your 2360 is a model that came out over 11 years ago and is missing many features that we here at the POI Factory love and use.

i.e. You'll need the correct one of these:

(And maybe a USB mini to micro adapter..?)

To the OP, maybe check the mass storage mode settings?

Long press on the round speedemeter which should get you into develop settings. I can't recall exactly which subsection it's under, so poke around.

Definitely needs mass storage mode

The nuvi 2300 series definitely is Mass Storage Mode type device. A white/grey colored computer icon will be displayed on the device when connected to the computer.

Success! I have a 2022 map on the Garmin!

My friend installed Garmin Express on her PC, it recognized the device and began updating the map! She selected the region and after about an hour it had the latest map downloaded!

Thank you to you all for your helpful comments and guidance.

Great

Fantastic

Lot of rigmarole but glad to hear you got it working.

Mac/Garmin

Since the PC worked, then phranc's earlier statement about Mac/Garmin's ability to interact may have come into play.

Cruncher, you mentioned your PC friend "selecting a region." If you got less than all of North America installed, you should add a SD card to get the full map. Some Garmin features like along a route voice guidance may be affected.

I think we'd all like to hear a future post from you on your thoughts on the Garmin device, and especially when on a route to a destination, how you like the Junction Views, voice guidance, etc.

glad that it worked!

We are all happy that you were able to get it working. I agree that the Garmin - Mac interaction was mainly the cause. For the future, I agree with Craig that, with the SD card installed, the entire map will fit into the nuvi.

Need to debug that Mac

For the future, you need to make an effort to debug the Mac and update the thread so we all can learn. Some help in that regard may be found at https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=PEtKkmDWkF65Y5pC2CbJGA.

Debugging the Mac

I have been making attempts at this. My first line of thinking was....use the data/charging cable, the Mac, and my old cell phone to see if I could transfer files between the two devices. I lost the SIM card PIN to that phone though.

I just can't think of devices to use where I could test those USB 3 data ports.

USB3

sussamb probably hit the nail on the head. The MacBook has only USB3 ports that are "backward compatible." The GPS is a USB2 device. We have discussed in other threads the possible problems with USB2 or USB3 computer ports.

I have a couple of Garmin Nüvi 760s. They work just fine plugged into USB3 ports.

USB Hub?

In most situations we recommend not using a USB hub between your computer and the Garmin device ... in other words, plug the Garmin directly into the computer's USB port.

HOWEVER! We have seen some situations, especially with USB 3 ports on newer computers where using an old USB 1.0 or 2.0 hub can resolve a connection issue (not always, but it has happened). So if you are like me and have a junk drawer full of old computer cables and components, and if one of them is an older USB hub, it is worth a try.

Mac or Windows? As I understand it, USB 3 is more likely to be an issue on a Mac than a Windows based machine

Just when I was thinking of getting rid of some 15-year old USB2 cables, and analog monitor cables, we have to keep them just in case!

Charging question

It seems that at one point I was able to charge this Nuvi with my data/charging cable connected to a computer or the same cable and my car's USB port. Now when I plug in the Nuvi to either of these things, I get that grey image of a PC on the screen. I don't think it is charging when it is on this screen.

When I use the cigarette lighter adapter with the USB connector in my car the Nuvi charges and you can see the battery icon changing.

Can anyone explain to me how I can charge my Nuvi with my charging cable and PC?

Normal

Grey PC icon just means that the GPS is connected to your computer and it is charging via USB port. You can charge the Garmin with the usb cable and any charging block that has USB-A port. I use my Samsung or Apple smartphone charger sometimes.

Will watch more closely

Thanks for clarifying. I will watch the charging situation more closely when I plug into the PC's USB port/car's USB port.
