Garmin Nuvi 360 Memory

I have a Garmin Nuvi 360 and have added a 4 GB micro SD card that is in an adapter. I have formatted the card, but when I update maps, the Garmin Nuvi 360 doesn't recognize it and only gives me 49 a state update. I thought perhaps my adapter slide switch was locking the adapter and preventing a write, but I think that is okay. Does anybody here have any suggestions? Could the micro SD be faulty or corrupted? Could the adapter be the problem? Should I just get a full size SD card? Could it be formatted incorrectly?

Garmin 360 Memory

Some of the older Garmins will not read SD cards over 2Gb, and the 360 cannot read any files greater than 2Gb, as per:

http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={b4b6e4a0-f1af-11df-ea12-000000000000}

The newer update files go over the 2Gb file size limit, creating a new problem. The solution as per Garmin (see above article) is:

"The workaround is to install the maps using a DVD or Map Update to the computer, as described below:

Please use either MapSource or MapInstall to select and load maps to an SD card that does not exceed a 2GB file size.
Click on the links below for instructions on installing maps using MapSource and MapInstall, after installing the maps from a DVD.
If you do not have a DVD or a Map Update of the City Navigator Europe maps, please contact Product Support using the link at the bottom of the article."

It's not the card, it's the file size that has a limit. A 4GB card works very well and the unit can access it all. It just won't process a file larger than 2GB.

Garmin Nuvi 360 Memory

That sounds familiar, now that I read it. I had forgotten about that limitation. Well, I will probably just settle for 49 states. That will be enough for me, anyway. Thank you very much for the replies.

Check card format

You can double check the card is formatted FAT32 and not FAT (or FAT16).

You should also verify there isn't any firmware updates for your unit.

It's been already mentioned

It's been already mentioned about file limitation. Also sometimes sd card don't get formatted properly in windows. Just use the following application http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/HP-USB-D...

Garmin Nuvi 360 Memory

FYI, my nuvi 360 (w/o memory card) just hit the memory wall with the latest update. The only region that fits native Nuvi 360 w/o a SD card is the Canada and border states. I have had lifetime maps for years, but only used US regions. This is the only GPS I've used while driving and have been very pleased with it. I replaced the battery several years ago and it continues to run flawlessly.

I will be installing a SD card since that is the least expensive option. Are there any threads on Nuvi performance using SD cards?

Email today from Garmin Support:

Unfortunately, as the map continues to grow in size, the map has become too large to fit on your nuvi's internal memory. It is only offering the Canada and border states as that is the smallest region of North America and that is now the only region that can fit. U.S. regions are too large now. You will need to insert an SD memory card into the slot on the side of your nuvi so that it will have more space to hold the map. Your nuvi can hold up to a 32gb card. When using Garmin Express however, the nuvi 360 is a model that Express does not support installing the map to the SD card. You would need to send the map to the computer first, then move the map to the SD card using Garmin MapInstall. Instructions for how to do this is in the link below.

Garmin Express Prompts me to Select a Region I don't want During a Map Update

In addition, I wanted to bring something to your attention. Due to the age of your device, you can run into issues with space, performance and software update support. We no longer provide a repair service for this model.

There shouldn't be a performance issue with a map on an SD card but keep in mind, as mentioned earlier in this ancient thread, that the nuvi 360 can not read files larger than 2GB in size regardless of the capacity of the SD card so you have to pick regions that do not exceed 2 GB. Then the question comes up as to the map naming options for a nuvi 360. If it only can use a file named gmapprom.img and no other, then you are limited to whatever fits in 2GB. If a supplemental map can be created, like gmapsupp.img, then you'd have two 2GB files to hold the map. I don't know if the nuvi 360 accepts a supplemental map, and if so, how many could be available.

Good luck.

Old thread

Guys, this is thread originally started in 2014 but to “Slolearner” virtually any card you buy today will exceed the speed capability of the Garmin device. I do suggest that you buy from Best Buy or Staples. Don’t use Amazon for the sake of saving a few $$$. By the way I just got a pair of 16 GB Lexar cards at Best Buy for about $18. It was a special but one went into my Garmin and one is a camera backup. Most Garmin devices can’t use anything above 32 GB so stick with about 16, likely the smallest you’ll find.

Correct, 16GB is the smallest you can get new

The nuvi 350, 360, 370, 650, 660, 670 and 680 will all accept up to 32GB maximum. As far as I'm aware, only the 295W, 5000, 850, 880, 855 and 885 nuvi automotive models are 8GB-capped.

Getting new 8GB memory cards these days is difficult. The 16's are still generally available new as are the 32's. Yes, it is best to get them from a big-box store since there are so many online which are fakes. It will cost $2 to $5 extra per card but it's absolutely worth it.

That May be what Garmin says, but it's incorrect ...

I am using a 32 GB micro SD card in my nuvi 855 and it works just fine.

Nope, just FAT32 formatted with default cluster size.
