Neighbor came over and asked that I help with a project.. Glad To!
In the bag was a Garmin.... She asks that I do whatever I can to it... to make it current..
Nuvi 240W...
OK... Fire up GE and it sees it... and says firmware is current, but then offers me a list of Costs for Map Updates.....
Disconnected and explained to her what she had....
It was a $3 Garage Sale purchase....
Probably cheaper to buy a new one!

Interesting ...
The nuvi 2x0W series was introduced in mid 2007 and that predates when Garmin bundled lifetime map updates with their devices. In fact, lifetime map subscriptions weren't even sold until 2009, so a 2x0W owner would have had to purchase the lifetime maps after 2009.
I don't know that I have ever heard of the nuvi 240W model before. I know there was a 200W a 250W and a 260W, but the 240W must have been a limited production model.

A mystery, indeed!

Google failed me in finding any description/review of the 240W or documented 240W image although Google did pull up some web pages and images where the 240W was mentioned as compared to a newer model. Then I thought, aha, I'll go to the owners manual for the nuvi 200W and I bet I'll see that it covers the 240W as well. No dice, although it did include the 200, 200W, 250, 250W, 260, 260W, and 270:

I did find links to the Garmin Fishfinder 240, the aircraft GMA 240 and the best I could find, a central Europe-mapped nuvi 240 although the W, if it means a wide display, would not look like the 240:

JanJ. if you remember, what map and version does it have?
240W
The 240 series is extremely limited on internal storage and more than likely will not handle more than a portion of the lower 48 states. The best bet for updating the unit would be Open Street Maps which are free and it is easy to specify areas to be downloaded.

I wonder if the 240W was one of those little documented promotional models marketed only in one of the big box stores like Walmart or Best Buy. I know we have run into this in our discussions a couple of other times.

It could be although I sorta remember that these Walmart/BestBuy "models" were called something like nuvi 2 or nuvi 5.
It could also have been a non-US model offered with only a map of Europe which is why I wondered if JanJ remembered what map the 240W had. Even with a US map, it could have been purchased by the original owner to replace the Europe map as these were the days when lifetime updates, etc. didn't exist yet and when maps and even map updates were CD or DVD single-time purchases. Ah, the days of dialup modems...
All in all, a fun little thread that serves no purpose at all.

I bought my original unit, a Nuvi 240 at Target. And it was a real basic unit having only the lower 48, no junction view or other goodies. It only had the ability to use one way point so it was pretty useless for long or scenic routes. I don't remember if you could use a USB card and it would have been 16GB or less and Class 4 at best. The USB connection for the computer was the 1.1 speed. It was a couple years later I got my 855 and then retired it for my current unit which sits on a shelf in the spare bedroom as my car has a built-in unit. The issue with the car's unit is no custom POI.

I did not check to see what
I did not check to see what map was installed
Yes 240W was the model #.
If you want I’ll ask them to let me have it again and check map version. It did have SD Card slot.
My old 660 used renamed map files on SD Card with Garmin directory, but with HTML file for map license for that SN.
??
It had original box, and manuals

Garmin 250
Just came into a Garmin 250 last weekend, friend giveaway. He had used it for a 32 mile drive in the states (We are in Alberta, Canada) and it was practically new. I attached it to latest Garmin Express and to my surprise, had lifetime maps, downloaded to the unit's SD card and works great 2022.20. No JCV, 3D, Mp3 etc., but such a small cute unit, I couldn't resist getting it updated. Battery is like new as well (from 2007 original), holds a charge well and found satellites pretty quick. Just love that we can use old tech so long. Cheers!

250W = nice unit
Just came into a Garmin 250 last weekend, friend giveaway.!
I had a 250W, nice unit but one day while driving on a vacation it started to smoke. I couldn’t do much except unplug from car but it kept smoking. I pulled over and opened the case and it was shot. 265W’s were on sale at Staples so pulled into the first one I saw and got one, which I still have (backup to 2689).
