Strange BC problem

In Windows 10

To begin with some program on my laptop somehow, without me initialling it, removed BaseCamp v.4.7.4.

Tried re-installing BC v.4.7.4 and v.4.7.3 Neither one did want to install and after several tries I gave up. It went through the install motions but only for about 15 seconds so I knew it didn't install.

Next I went into the Registry and removed any mention of Garmin BaseCamp, that took a while.

Then I downloaded a legacy version of BC v.4.2.5. Low and behold it installed and as soon as I opened it up it informed me it is now downloading v. 4.7.4. That it did. But I also had to re download the 2022.20 map to the computer since it came up as a locked map.

Anyway all is back to normal again.

Mystery

Yes, the more complex a system is, the more likely it is that something will fail.

I'm just happy BaseCamp has been discontinued.
But
What convoluted, monstrosity, thing will they come up with next?
Not a progam that is downloadable but probably only accessed online, if rumors are true.

I never get lost, but I do explore new territory every now and then.

Substitute for BaseCamp or MapSource ???

A program which apparently is FREE ! FURKOT Furkot.com is an online trip/route creating site which creates gpx files that can be downloaded as Trips to your GPS.

This is a review of the program on a Website called "Miles & Hours". I've also read that it is more intuitive than BaseCamp.

I apparently missed something. When did they discontinue BaseCamp?

Ditto. I never did like basecamp. In fact still use mapsource to this day. For some devices BC did work better though. It appears to still be available for download.

Dated 20210519, seems relatively current.

BC like MapSource is still available although all real development has stopped, the BaseCamp team was disbanded 3 years or so ago. Only changes that have been made have been essential ones, eg to comply with GDPR and to enable it to work with a few of the newer devices.

I still use it almost daily, both for On the road and On the trail devices. Although initially as a MapSource user I disliked it once I understood how it works I've hardly ever used MapSource, BaseCamp is far more flexible and suits my needs better.

MapSource for those that prefer it will still work with Garmin devices that can be set to mass storage rather than mtp mode which is now the default for many, although the latest Zumo device don't allow that which I suspect will be the same for all Garmin devices going forward.

I still use both MS and BC. For a quick file with few waypoints, MS is easier to use since it loads the file quickly onto a blank map. MS does not "remember" the last file loaded while BC does. To use a small file in BC, you must remove the last loaded file first so the screen isn't cluttered with waypoints you don't need.

Sadly, I think the need for this type of program is diminishing along with the demand for stand alone GPSr's. Automotive navigation seems to be shifting toward in dash units and smartphones which are difficult to use with .GPX files.

^^The last car (g37) had a built in gps. It was garbage for custom routes but worked well to provide overview. It was easy enough to turn a knob on the console to quickly zoom in/out. A garmin driveluxe 50 was used for gpx support.

Part of the fun on the bike was finding these out of the way roads less traveled. Nearly impossible to do on the phone with google maps. It wants to route you via the quickest route.

Some of the cars gps are garmin based. I wonder if those support gpx import?

Not really

While my car GPS is Garmin based there is NO way to add any external files to it.
For a short time there was a VW dealer in Germany (You had to be able to understand German) who had a program online which let you do that, but it has long ago been removed. I suppose, by the Manufacturer who did not like people being able to add things on their own.
