Sox.exe, as an installable program, is at ver 14.4.2. Sox.exe for POILoader is at ver 14.0.1
Is there a need to update?
How would one update with the installable version?
Would it be just a matter of installing it, then taking the SOX.EXE and copying to the POILoader install folder or is there something special about ver. 14.0.1?
DO NOT UPDATE
A few years ago some individuals on here tested new versions and they did not work.

Sox.exe????????
The SoX utility/files that I'm familiar is a general purpose audio processing utility. It is used to convert audio files to other popular audio file types and also apply sound effects and filters during the conversion.
Sox by the way stands for Sound eXchange.

Don't update.
I agree with pwohlrab. Don't update. Some time back a member convinced us the new version worked. At first glance all seemed to work. In my case I was getting alerts for the wrong locations. If I remember correctly the newer version required a extra file to download. Long story short we all went back to the Version 14.0.1.

sox.exe
I been using the same sox.exe since about 2014 or whenever I got my first Garmin that used .wav instead of mp3. Sox is a basic file I keep inside of my poilaoder.exe program. I didnt even think about needing sox when I put in my POIs when I got a new 61 LMT a while back. So the sounds work because sox.exe is always there in my poiloader folder.
Unless you are the lead sled dog, the view never changes. I is retard... every day is Saturday! I still use the Garmin 3590 LMT even tho I upgraded to the Garmin 61 LMT. Bigger screen is not always better in my opinion.
The newer soxes
It was the great detective project of 2011, finally solved by our member Evert who was able to trace the difference in what POILoader and sox v14.0.1 did correctly and why the newer sox versions failed with POI Loader.
The error was an especially unusual one. When using a later version of sox, it would substitute a single wav audio alert for all custom audio alerts for every POI file with audio alerts (assuming sox 14.0.1 had previously run on the computer but would result in no alert if 14.0.1 hadn't been run in the past).
All the bloody details can be found on this 3-pager:

Note that many of our suppositions on page 1 and early page 2 turned out to be red herrings so you will need to at least go through the end of page 2 to see what Evert found and why we all now use the ancient sox 14.0.1 here and why the POI Factory has it available for download.
Here's a link to the first breakthrough of the cause (although you'll have to follow several of its replies to get to Evert's final discovery and conclusion):

Soxes and foxes
We now know what the proper sox says but what does the fox say?
