Garmin 2699 Computer Cable

My Garmin needs charging periodically, and with minimal driving it seldom goes in the car. I used to charge it with the cable that came with it. The same cable that I use to update, which is not a problem. I've seem a message that says something to the effect that it can't charge unless I use an original cable, but this one is original.

Any idea what the problem is? Do I really need a new cable (I guess I do, but am looking for confirmation.)?

Alex

PS When using my cable I can view all the files on my computer and Garmin Express updates via it, so the cable can't be too bad. GRRR

2699 charging

The 2699 is for use in a car, connected to 12 volts. Running on the internal battery alone, it will not last long. Also, the USB cable can charge the battery but at a reduced rate. With the large display, the USB cable can't keep up with the load. Use a Garmin wall charger for more charging current.

Computer and ports?

Might also be of interest to know what computer you are using or the available ports. It is generally considered that the USB ports are around 5 vDC but the current capacity in an older PC is about 0.5 amp and something relatively new may have a port rated at 0.9 amp.

It is current that determines if a device can charge properly and how long a period of time may be needed.

OK, I'll look into a wall charger. But it did charge it originally, I think.

As for the PC USB current, no idea. The computer is an older Acer, say 5+, well maybe 7+

If you like to know things, check out this old link:

If you can’t find what is mentioned at CraigW’s link

Try the device at https://www.amazon.com/Soondar-USB-Voltage-Current-Multimete...

The cable as well can be a limit to the current. The maximum you could send over a standard USB cable for battery charging was 1.5A @ 5v. Most inexpensive cables use 28/28 gauge, meaning 28 gauge for data and 28 gauge for power, because they are designed to handle only 500 mA.

Better cables like Anker use 28 gauge for data and 24 gauge for power. The official USB current spec for a cable with 24 gauge wire for power is 1.5A. Length is a factor as well. The longer the cable the higher the voltage drop so try to keep the length to 4 to 6 feet.

Both of those look

Both of those look interesting, I'll add them to my short-term to do list.

Thanks

New Charger Working

Just a final note on this. I bought a 4-port charger off eBay for $18+ and it came yesterday. (Garmin had a package for $29.) Plugged it in today and it charged the battery (and my phone at the same time).

I appreciate the help from everyone.
