Garmin 2699 & MicroSD Card

I recently updated my Garmin and had to reduce what was loaded because of space requirements. So I ordered a microsd card (San Disk 128gb). It came to day and I slipped it in the only slot, which is on the bottom edge. Plugged it into my computer and no disk! What do I need to do for it to see the disk? I saw nothing in Settings on the Garmin.

You're limited to a 32 GB SD card or smaller.

Craig is correct but

Craig is correct but don't run out and order a replacement smaller capacity card, unless it doesn't cost you to return the incorrect capacity card.

A Sandisk 32GB microSD card is shown at my local Walmart for $3 (clearance). Even Best Buy is down around $10. Get a brand name (Samsung, Sandisk, PNY) but then buy on price. A card with extreme read/write speeds isn't necessary.

FAT32

Try formatting it as FAT32, larger cards aren't that by default and they need to be to work in a Garmin

Windows 10 will likely choke on the FAT32 format

I don’t think you can format a 128 GB card to FAT32 with Windows 10.

My experience with a 64GB card is Windows will refuse drives larger than 32GB to FAT32. Give it a try, but if it doesn’t work, you will need a 3rd party utility to format the SD Card. The free version of AOMEI Partition Assistant will format that SD Card to FAT32 easily.

Correct

You do need a utility to format larger cards in Windows, I understand it can be done on a mac, probably the only advantage of having one wink

A utility and the use of Powershell is mentioned at https://www.howtogeek.com/316977/how-to-format-usb-drives-la....

Since the profile for "asallwey" shows Virginia, I'd suggest a local Best Buy or Staples. Micro Center in Fairfax could be an option as well depending on where the individual lives. The Micro Center 16GB microSDHC Class 10 Flash Memory Card is $4. See https://www.microcenter.com/product/486146/micro-center-16gb...

Going Smaller

CraigW, all I can is, ops! After reading your post I do recall that, now.

As for getting another card, well I have a 15g in my phone, so I'll look into swapping that into the Nuvi. This time, before I jumped, I checked my phone manual and it will take up to a 1tb card.

So other than the hassle of moving stuff from the small card to the big, I should be in business. Now to go read the phone manual to see if I can just move the files or if I have to send it to the cloud first, or if ... . Things are not always easy in this "user friendly plug and play" world

Thanks for the Help!

Alex

Depending on the phone

Depending on the phone, back up what is on the “15GB” card (probably 16 GB by the way) to a PC or the cloud. Then put the 128 GB into the phone and restore that content to the phone. Once you are happy the phone is working, then put format the 16GB card to FAT 32 and physically move it to the Garmin. Check carefully around your PC, many laptops have a built in SD slot and the 128GB card likely came with a microSD to SD adapter.

Fat32 Format of SD Card

Try this:https://www.easeus.com/partition-master/smartdisk-fat32-format-utility-tool.html It's free.

I've been using this utility for 5 years with good results. I use it to format large capacity cards in my dashcam.

Um..

I used to use Rufus too but the virus scans are reporting eGambit malware or something of the sort. May be a false but I haven't used it in awhile since.

I've been using this software for years with no ill effects. It is open source and I always get it from the developer's site. The virus scanners are not 100%. If a number of them report something then I take notice, otherwise 1 or 2 is typically a false positive.

I've gotten so spoiled with esxi and vm's that actually installing something from usb rather than just mounting the iso seems outdated.

FAT32 Format

You should be able to format a 128 GB SD card FAT32 using the Windows 10 command prompt:
FORMAT x: /FS:FAT32 /A:size
where x: is the drive letter you are formatting and size is the allocation unit size.

Example: FORMAT G: /FS:FAT32 /A:32K

Some people have reported getting a "Volume too large" error when formatting large hard drives over 1 TB this way, but I have always been able to format large SD cards (up to 256 GB) without any problems.

Nuvi 2797

My 2797 will not even recognize a 32gb card. I have reformatted the card numerous times as detailed above but no joy. Looks like I will have to get a smaller card before the next update.

32 gB is good

32 GB is an acceptable size. Garmin Express will not use it until the device memory is almost full.

Slot may be faulty then in which case a smaller card won't work either sad
