2597LMT 1 won't connect the other is fine (along with two other Garmins)

I have two 2597LMT. One won't connect, the other is fine.
Two still older 2360s have no problem so it's not cable.

1 2Z2100951 (slightly older S/N) no problems. connects in auto MTS mode, updates, backs up. Maps at 2020.20 latest per Garmin express. Also recognized by Base Camp. (replaced battery at same time as #2 since some thought that could be a problem with #2 in other forum comments on same issue and they were very weak.)

2 3GH216525 will not auto connect or when manually switched to MTS (Mass Storage Mode) (slightly newer S/N)

Will still not connect, tried:
- different cables including a Garmin branded cable,
- different USB (2 & 3)
- different Win10 drives images
- manual Mass Storage Mode and one time Mass Storage mode - no difference.

Lifetime maps stuck at 2019.10

Won't connect to Base Camp or Garmin Express. USB connection charges fine.

Afraid to reset and not be able to reload favorites at all (at this point).

I've been in developers mode to set MTS Mode to manual and one time, powered off and disconnected from PC. Reposed and plugged back in. And, every other combination I could think of so far.

Any suggestions? I've been in developers mode to set MTS Mode to manual and one time, powered off and disconnected from PC. Repowered and plugged back in. And, every other combination I could think of so far.
The family member using the one that is not connecting put it in the glove box of a rental and somehow cracked the screen. Before I got the screen, it still wouldn’t connect to the PC. I put a new screen and battery in it. it charges fine, connects to power fine, etc.
but still won’t either:
1. connect when in MTS mode
or
2. it’s actually not going into MTS mode.
The only thing I can think of that is left to do is do factory reset but it would (I’m assuming) wipe out maps and favorites) then, if it still won’t connect it’s worthless.

1. Any suggestions
2. If I do a factory reset, will the current maps still be in it? Ultimately, that might be worth it at some point when the maps get too out of date. Not such a great idea if the maps go to 2012 or whatever even if I lost all the shared favorites.

Thanks.

Well

That's very strange but while a master reset will remove favourites it won't remove maps so worth a try.

If the reset works you

If the reset works you should be able to reload your favorites providing you used GE to load the last map AND you checked the box for GE to backup. You should find CURRENT.GPX in a Garmin folder on your PC.

IMO

with a cracked screen, the 2597 isn't worth spending a lot of time & effort to restore.

It appears you have 2 choices. Either try a factory reset or don't. Either way, you loose your favorites. If the reset works, at least you have a functioning unit.

If you need a second 2597, you could get one of these used units on eBay for $30.

The eBay vendor is well respected and has a supply of these units.

Otherwise, put the money toward a newer unit.

These are just my opinions. hopefully, someone here can offer a better solution.

Good luck!

Well, he said he replaced

Well, he said he replaced the screen already.

And Favorites are not lost if he used GE for last map update.

Connection problem

Have you tried all the steps provided by Garmin support? https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=l0p9W9vsc37NJ3vH2b5pF6...

My guess ...

and only a guess, is that it is a hardware issue with the USB port/USB circuitry. If it had a cracked screen, it apparently took a pretty hard blow, so possibly some internal components other than the screen were damaged.

I understood the battery was replaced but missed the screen.

I'll have to play around some more with the GE backup option. I've tried using it several times in the past and no .GPX backup file was created. I'm likely doing something wrong.

I keep backup copies of all my favorites anyway so I normally don't use GE for that purpose.

I also recently noticed that

I also recently noticed that it now saves my POI.GPI file as well. Not that I would ever need that, I'd probably just run POILoader again. Must have happened with some update in the last year or so.

Had the similar issues on

Had the similar issues on 1490LMT, and tried it all.

No luck.

Hope your works out better.

have same issue with Garmin

have same issue with Garmin 2598LMTHD. Cannot get into mass storage mode and have PC recognize garmin when connected via USB cable. Garmin does not show up on computer. only charges when connected via a USB cable. Anyone find a way to force into mass storage mode so PC recognizes. thx

Well

If it's only charging via your cable check you're using a data cable?

If you are try a different data cable.
