Newbie needs advice on custom map turn by turn Drive Smart 61

I have just bought a new Drive Smart 61 and are trying to plan a custom trip to the USA.
So far I have plotted the waypoints in Google My Maps and have the drive directions route done.
Saved it as a KMZ and converted to a GMX with GPS Visualizer.
I dragged and dropped the GMX file in the SD card into a GMX folder.(I also have one named "Garmin", which has OSM maps of the USA, which this trip is for.(Works OK)
The way points show up in the "SAVED" screen.
What do I need to do to have my custom route show as a turn by turn?
Also used "TRIP PLANNER" by inserting the start way point and my finish way point. The in between trip way points only show now and again. The "Start and End" of trip is always there.
I require my custom turn by turn route, but the GPS ignores my way points and plots an alternate route.

Thank you for any advice.

In the Trip Planner you need

In the Trip Planner you need to edit the Trip and add your waypoints. They can be added as "Shaping Points" or waypoints to stop at.

See this thread for more information. http://www.poi-factory.com/node/45037

This is pretty much the same for all the late model Garmin's.

Yep ...

@shelbyaust

That's the way to do it on your device, but if you want to be able to send a trip to your device along with the various shaping or viapoints then you first need to learn how to use a suitable program, Garmin's BaseCamp is one that enables you to do so.

Thanks for your reply. Only

Thanks for your reply.
Only the "Start and Finish icon" is showing in the preview map.
The poi's between are not visible."
Also the complete route is listed in the "View Turns" area of "Saved Trip"

Will Basecamp allow me to

Will Basecamp allow me to set the custom map in one go and not have to do any alterations in the actual GPS unit?

Well ...

If you meant set the route then yes. Note though that you need to use the same map in BaseCamp that is going to be used on the device, and with routing and avoidance settings as identical as possible on both. Even then I occasionally get the odd minor differences due to differences in the routing algorithms between BaseCamp and my devices

Thanks.I have had a play

Thanks.
I have had a play with Basecamp.
So I understand that the custom route that you upload is what you get and the GPS unit will not start altering the route?

Another question.
The trip we are planning is Route 66. Would you make a route for each state or have one unbroken route from East coast to West coast?

Thanks

Having done this in Delorme

Having done this in Delorme Street Atlas a number of years ago, making short or daily routes is preferable. It's going to take a heck of a lot of waypoints and shaping points to keep you on Rte 66. When I did it, we were doing our best to stay on 66 at all costs.

Warning, there is a section going southwest out of Santa Fe NM that is not passable by anything but a high clearance 4WD vehicle.

Here is a link that may help you create your route. https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1ULQ73fo2oT8o4m...

There are several websites that will help you make that trip. I no longer have links to them, but Google is your Friend.

And bear in mind the limitations on numbers of points. Modern Garmins can only have up to 30 via points in a route, but 125 shaping points between each of the 30.

Route 66

Route 66 or "The Mother Road" as it is also called begins on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago and ends in Santa Monica, California. My suggestion is to access several of the books written about the road and the many sights and attractions that are along the route. I would then spend the time to organize the sights I wanted to visit and group them into day trips. My route would then start each day and lead to the attractions I wanted to visit with my stop for the night. I would then plan the next day in the same manner until I either reached the end of the road or ran out of time for my visit.

There is a poi file for Route 66

It doesn't look like it's been updated since 2010 but what would really change on a file like this?

Correct, the POI link does not show updates, but from the Maintainer's page, it appears the file or at least something on the file's page was updated Sep 9, 2018:

I did catch that and wasn't sure where it was.

Thanks

Route 66 GPX

Thanks all for your wonderful help. I'm getting there slowly.

Custom POI
I uploaded the Route 66 file with POI Loader (.gpl)and have a "Custom POI" in the "CATEGORIES".
There shows only about approx. 52, should be 234. The POI Loader showed 234 was uploaded.
Is it limited in poi's?
Deleted and then put a .gpx into the GPX folder and now shows the 234 but in the "SAVED".

Help appreciated.

They are all there, only

They are all there, only about 50 of the closet will display.

I never get lost, but I do explore new territory every now and then.

If I am on the road and want

If I am on the road and want find a poi that I can not see, how does that work?
So you think I am better to have them in the SAVED" and that way I can see all?

Thanks

@ shelbyaust .Other poi locations

Your GPS will show the closest 50 Pois to you. For Pois outside that limit. You do have the option to search for pois in a different city or state. See https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=cvv8cfem534DtIDwvUnMZ7... .If your device has voice commands. You can use the voice search method.
