Is anythying else stored in the .gpx file besides Favourites?

I know Favourites are stored in the .gpx file, but is anything else...like recent Selections? I want to copy this file to the SD card in case the Favourites get wiped out. At least I can restore them just by hooking up to any PC/Mac while on our driving trip in Ireland. I spent a lot of time creating and saving them to the Nuvi.

current.gpx

On my nuvi 200 the Favorites are stored in current.gpx. I don't know about the recent selections.

If you have Mapsource....

If you have Mapsource, you can save your favorites as waypoints. Just another way to do it.

What are Mapsource waypoints when loaded into NUVI?

mkahn,

Are you referring specifically to the c530 or would it be the same for the NUVI 350? How do waypoints show up in the the NUVI 350? In the NUVI you can only enter one waypoint manually when a route is active. Are Mapsource waypoints the same as POI's in the NUVI? What file are the waypoints stored in? Do they become POI's and get stored in poi.gpi? I know that when you use POI loader and download POI's, the existing POI file is replaced.

I'm not mkahn - but I have the answer...

What Mapsource calls waypoints are "Favorites" on the Nuvi.

To use 'Favorites' as waypoints in a Nuvi, first, select your final destination, and hit "go" - then, go back to your favorites list, and select the first place you want to go that's between where you are and your destination, and hit "go" - the unit will ask if you want to change your destination or insert your selection as a "via" - select the "via" option - and you've just used the Nuvi's "via" feature, which is what other units and Mapsource call waypoints.

You can only have one 'via' at a time in an active route on a Nuvi, and, it does not have to be selected from the favorites list either - you can search and select one of the built-in pois as a via, or one of any custom pois you have installed as a via point. Once you've reached that first via point, you can insert another if desired, multiple times if desired, before reaching that ultimate final destination.

On the Nuvi, your favorites are stored in a file called 'current.gpx' in a sub folder called 'gpx' in the 'Garmin' folder on the drive letter your device shows up as on your computer.

Is .gpx file replaced when Mapsource sends waypoints to NUVI ?

kch50428 thanks for the good explanation. A few additional questions. If I use Mapsource to send the waypoints to the NUVI, will the existing .gpx file be over-written so I lose any existing favorites? Is it possible to send the NUVI's favorites to Mapsource and combine them with new waypoints made up in Mapsource and then send the combined waypoints/favorites to the NUVI?

What I do

Is connect to the computer, and use Mapsource to fetch my 'Favorites' from the unit first...and save a copy on my computer...

The Nuvi keeps a back-up of your 'Favorites' hidden - so if you delete any in Mapsource, and upload the list, the stuff you deleted is still there. If you edit one of the 'Waypoint/Favorites' properties, you'll get two entries in your favorites list.

To avoid this, you have to delete the ones you want to delete on the Nuvi itself...and for the one's you change, you have to manually delete the duplicates, making sure to delete the old version, not the corrected one (yeah, I've done that...) - it's rather a pain in the tush, but better than manually recreating an entire 'Favorites' file from scratch...
