I just don't understand alerts.

Okay, let me apologize in advance if this has been covered before. I did a context search and could not find anything that helped me.
I have loaded at least 8 POI files in my Zumo 450, each from a different folder, and each renamed to a unique .gpi file name on the Zumo. The POI's display correctly, including the custom icons. Of the 8, I only selected manual load on two of them, and then specified an alert distance for each. The other 6 were loaded with the automatic (Express) settings.
I had believed the if the Express settings were used, the POI would default to no alert notification. What I am seeing though is different. It seems to be alerting me when I get close to most of my POI's, even those I don't want to be notified about. I really don't want to be reminded every time I approach a QuikTrip gas station, or Advance Auto Parts. I only want to be warned when I approach red-light-cameras, or Dairy Queen stores. What am I doing wrong?

Did you use Garmin's POI

Did you use Garmin's POI loader? If not, that may be the problem.

check your file names

1) Check your file names, sometimes if there is a number in the file name you may get an alert.

2) Sometimes the poi loader will "remember" settings.

Personally, I use the manual setting and then make the proper selection for each file.

Also, if you are renaming your gpi files to unique names, remember to either rename again or delete before to reloading a problem file.

POI Loader

I believe that your issue maybe the fact that POI Loader installs/reinstalls ALL POI files each time you install even one.

In other words, you may have done a manual load on a file last week, but when you add a POI file to your PC folder and re-run POI Loader, it basically deletes all previous Custom POI's and installs everything currently in your PC's folder - therefore overwriting any previous manual alerts you specified.

That's how it was explained to me, and seems to work with my Nuvi.

you are right...however

That is how it works...However Red stated he renamed his poi.gpi files with unique names. What this does is prevent the poi loader from overwriting the previously loaded files.

when poi loader is run and poi files are loaded, it creates a file called "poi.gpi" when you run it again it rewrites the "poi.gpi" file thus erasing the previous loaded file(s). To get around this you can rename the poi.gpi file to anything you want such as "lowes.gpi" then you can load a kfc poi, and you will end up with "lowes.gpi" and "poi.gpi" The kfc will be in the poi.gpi file. If you then renamed that poi.gpi file to "kfc.gpi" and loaded more poi files, you would end up with lowes.gpi and kfc.gpi and poi.gpi . The uniquely named gpi files will not change until you delete them the poi.gpi will get rewritten each time poi loader is run.

I hope this makes sense.

Thanks for the clarification!

I am still a new to this whole thing ... trying to learn fast, but just got my first gps unit a couple of weeks ago. Your explaination makes perfect sense.

One questions ... when you rename your poi.gpi file on your unit, how does it end up displaying?? Simply as seperate folders/catagories under Custom POI?

you got it

Thank you for explaining the renaming of the poi.gpi file. I have a Garmin StreetPilot c340 and i use POI loader. Just where would the poi.gpi file be for my unit?

the 340 might be a different animal

Unfortunately, I don't think the 340 is "seen" as a separate drive on your computer.

On units that are recognized as a separate drive, (as well as the SD card), the poi.gpi file will be found:

My Computer > gpsr (or sd card)> Garmin > POI

Inside that POI folder you will have your poi.gpi file (if you have loaded any custom poi's)
