Does anyone know (or care to guess)
Does anyone know (or care to guess) how much it costs Garmin each time they come out with a quarterly map update? In other words - how much could Garmin save if they decided to cut back one or two map updates each year?

cost
I suspect it's not that much they get their maps from another source just a mater of loading it their servers.
They probably have a contract for X number of updates so that is a fixed cost.

Map update cost.
I am sure Garmin does not publish its arrangement with Here or how much they have to pay Here for map data. My guess is they have to pay Here a fee for each copy that is sold or downloaded. Then on top of that, you can add the cost of manipulating the Here map data and merging it with data from other sources into Garmin's proprietary formats (.img, .jcv, .sid, etc.). Then add the cost of the infrastructure and bandwidth required for the huge volumes of data that will be downloaded.
Only Garmin knows the true cost of a map update, but my guess is that it is significant. It makes me wonder how the "lifetime map update" model Garmin has adopted can be sustainable with the declining sales of new devices.

Jack too
Thought it might have dropped.... But it was a Samantha Update!!!
And if using Garmin Express, if you change your device's active voice to Jack, then re-run GE, you'll get a Jack update to match Sam's.
It seems that updating POI data would be far more time-consuming

I think the cost of each map update is significant also.
It seems to me that updating POI data (restaurants, stores, shops, etc.) would be far more time-consuming compared to updating streets, roads, highways and Interstates - because businesses are added/changed far more often than roads. Personally I don't see how they [Here] does it.

I'd bet that the POI database is a fair chunk of the map download we get.

With things the way they are...
...it wouldn't surprise me at all if Garmin goes to two updates a year. It seems that Garmin has been slowly extending the updates out. I think we got the first update this year in January and the last one was in June. It is starting to make sense that they may be moving to a January-June update schedule. I guess we will find out shortly if my thinking is correct. Personally, I like the three times a year schedule, but I guess I could live (if I have to) with two updates a year. The only issue is that in the area where I live, subdivisions and road changes are happening on a monthly basis. A new housing development here, a new interchange there, a new rotary (or roundabout, depending on where you are from), somewhere else. Constant changes.

Seems like that's the probable direction we are headed for ….. While there are constant changes, the impact for the user community in general is minimal …..

lost business
due to cell phone gps and car gps and there improvement's Garmin is losing a lot of business, they even have wrist bands giving directions how far you walked, I don't even see garmin in the gps business in a few years unless the make some drastic changes like telling you when you need to stop for gas ,what's the weather like on the road your traveling on or something of that nature then again it seems all types of electronic devices are changing so fast you cant keep up with them. cars that park themselves TV's you talk to see what you want! the times they are changing
I rarely see a portable GPS in a vehicle nowadays.

When you go into stores like Best Buy, Fry's Electronics, etc. the GPS section for vehicles is much reduced from what it used to be, and the device offerings keep dwindling. I rarely see a portable GPS in a vehicle nowadays. They will eventually go the route of the telephone booth.

The only time we will use my Nuvi is for a back up to our car navigation. I like to put in a route when we go on road trips. Now that I can put them in to my car navigation I will only use the Nuvi for backup and to check if I need to change my route while on the road. It is better than my car navigation but now that we are used to the car we never use the Nuvi GPS unless we rent a car. I use Google Maps a lot to search for stops we want to make. Car Navigation and Google Maps is probable going to win out in the long run. I hope when we get another new car the navigation is better by then.

Mary,
I think how you use your Nuvi GPS is very common for people that once previously used only a portable GPS device, but now own newer vehicles with in-car navigation. They find that they really like the in-car navigation system. I personally cannot imagine owning a late model vehicle without an in-car navigation system.
Using a portable GPS device in your vehicle is kinda like still using a rotary-dial telephone, a corded keyboard, a black & white computer monitor, a phone book, a phone booth...or all those other things that people really do not ever want to see or use anymore. The only problem is - it takes some people much longer to realize it...

Portable GPS
If you live in an area with constant cell coverage then you may not need a portable GPS. If you have in car GPS, you might not need one either. But, if you travel to some of the areas around the US where there is no cell coverage or sporadic coverage then I feel having a portable GPS is a must. Many of the places I travel have limited or no cell coverage.
My car GPS map is 8 years old. My Garmin map is as current as possible and awaiting the newest update.
I'm surprised this thread is
WHEN
Don't know why I care I'm on a metered connection for the next few months so I have a couple of months before I can update.
My new guess is Jan 2019.

january ?
January hmm I think your probably right, imagine a 2020-1 release in the year 2020 , and after only 2 releases a year what's next one a year! Garmin has to do something to stay alive or go under the competition is at its gates.
Built-in car nav systems suck and too expensive to update

Except so many, if not most car nav systems are so deficient you need a good portable device. $200 or so to update evey year is nuts and a rip-off.
So when the next Garmin updates finally arrive I have lifetime maps & traffic AND can install my own POIs. No contest.

We seem to overlook all other data besides the maps. There is quite a bit of data in a "map" besides the mapping. All those company names, categories, addresses, utilities, etc.
