No offence ! BUT WHY ?

nickjr wrote:

But why would anyone put such a thing into their home ? It sits there day and night and listens to everything going on in the home.

Whatever happened to all those who bitch and complain about Big Brother ( Government ) sticking their nose into everything. About closed circuit cameras keeping an eye out for various reasons.

Now people willingly buy a 24/7/365 spy to sit in their home!

I am hoping to be able to

I am hoping to be able to listen to all my music from amazon being played via Alexa as I drive instead of listening to the radio, at least I hope to do so. My whole house is now wired via alexa, it does everything (most everything) turn the lights, coffee pot, tv, music, sports, etc,etc and so much more

Sounds like

you're enjoying it!

Not something I'm planning to get, but I look forward to hearing your thoughts and experience with it.

All this convenience..not that good for us

Yet another device to keep us from getting up and moving around..thinking.. having to remember stuff. All that convenience just may not be all that healthy in the long term.

Alexa, open the pod bay doors
Alexa, who you gonna call?
Alexa, are you Skynet?
Alexa, Winter is coming
Alexa, beam me up

Thanks for the link. I don't think this is something that I would get or use. however, I said that about Alexa before my son got me one for Christmas. wink

Alexa

My daughter left her Echo Dot here for a while and I messed with it. The whole Alexa thing looks mostly like a solution looking for a problem.

Not true. Allegedly, Alexa only listens for the wake up word (Alexa is the default) and if heard, then begins listening to what is said (asked) next.

Garmin Speak

Congratulations. Enjoy the product. With your at home setup, no hands commands from the car is awesome. I have a smart home too so I understand the potential.

.

Interested to hear too

Well strangely enough !

I do remember that for instance my Nuvi 3790 would all of a sudden request me to command it. As it was I never did utter the command phrase, but obviously something spoken in my car stereo set it off.

Regardless this thing will sit and listen and what it transmits to wherever who knows. NO not me, even though I'm in my Golden years I can get up and do things myself.

I can see a problem

Remember Ralph Kramden? Come on, think back...

Remember when he said, "One of these days Alice, to the moon!"

Well, when Alice finally disappears and the police pull the tapes, Ralph will be in big trouble.

Don't be Ralph.

I got the device yesterday, it sure is small compared to the picture, make an appointment with Best Buy for the installation which they charge $49.00 to install it and hide the wires behind the dash, this will be done on Tuesday, will give you a review when install is completed

Garmin Speak with Alexa

Device is working as designed, however to have the device play through my car speakers, the tech will have to install another cable then I will use my auxiliary port to play the device though my speakers. Having trouble though registering the device with Garmin express, does not recognize the device, will contact them this week. You have use the command such as Alexa ask Garmin for directions, etc etc, the recording of voice and video is good for this small device, however 8gb does not go very far, will get a larger SD card.

Hello nickjr, how is the navigation on this device. I am used to map display on the screen and specially in big cities with complex intersections. Not sure how this device will guide me on complex intersections?

Update, I noticed today that my compass on my rear view mirror was stuck in S when I was going East, looked in my manual and found that since I place the device near the rear view mirror, and since it attaches via a magnet, has caused my compass not to work, will now have to move it so it does not interfere with my compass

Garmin Speak™ Plus With Amazon Alexa

NickJr, now that it has been a couple of months since you got this, do you have any additional thoughts on this? I am slightly interested in this, but I would probably miss not having a traditional map display on a screen in front of me.

The other thing that I am wondering is if this can navigate to locations that aren't in the Garmin database yet? For example, when they built a Cabelas near me, it took quite a while for it to make it to the Garmin database. Google Maps was able to find it much sooner. If Garmin is/would be able to use Google data, it would probably help for navigating to newer locations.

I suppose if Garmin Speak ends up being a successful product for Garmin, they may expand that functionality to additional units in the future.

Looks intresting, intesting

Looks intresting, intesting how they have simplified the guidance. Not all all trying to popo your new toy, but, my concern with this and my DriveSmart is Garmin's continued reliamce on cell phone data via Bluetooth. Sort of forces us to leave our cell phones on charge since the Bluetooth quicky depletes batteries. Sort of wish they would go in the direction of a self-reliance GPS unit.

follow up report

Hopefully we'll get a follow up report on it?

No battery drain.

They only depend on the cell for traffic, nothing else. If Bluetooth is liking your phone, you have another problem. My phone is always connected by BT to the two and never run my phone battery down. Even after 16 hours.

Traffic coverage via the Garmin is spotty at best. There are huge areas of the country not covered by the built in app. Smart link provides 100%, coverage, where cell service is available. Data use is minimal, and no noticeable battery use. The screen doesn't have to be on all the tumor like Waze, and Google maps.
