Garmin Express 7.17.2.0 is now available at least for Windows users

This version may have fixed the fact the GE was in that Startup group of some Windows versions, in spite of "running in the background" being disabled."

I did the update, trouble free, and the running in the background was NOT checked after the installation!

User notes say the update accomplishes the following:

Fixed an issue with ANT devices not being detected.

Garmin got this problem only half right. I just installed GE 7.17.2.0 on my Win 10 laptop and the "Keep GE running in background" is NOT checked. However, upon a power-up boot or any reboot GE is in fact started in the background. If I bring it up from there then shut it down it goes away until I start it up again from the desktop or upon another boot up.

I was wondering about that. Since I had already gone to Windows 11 Settings/Apps/Startup and turned off Garmin Express from auto-starting, my update to 7.17.2 kept it from starting at bootup because of my Win 11 setting. But as you've just proved, Garmin Express 7.17.x, on its own, will ignore the unchecked "Always keep running in background..." crying mad crying

I can imagine that Garmin wants the various fitnesses devices to have an effortless daily connection to a computer which requires GE running in background and we On The Road GPS users, that only need GE for occasional software and map updates, are a minority of GE users.

How are you determining that GE is still running in the background? I just did a reboot on my Win 10 laptop, and using Task Manager > Startup it shows Garmin, but it is still tagged as disabled which I had done previously.

After booting up there's a GE symbol on my system tray on the bottom of the screen that wasn't there before I rebooted. If I click it, GE starts.

Fitness devices do not need a daily connection with Express, and I doubt that Garmin is moving in that direction. In fact, most Fitness users probably never use Express more than a couple times a year. Their daily connection is the the Garmin Connect Mobile app.

It's just Garmin's sloppy coders screwing up what was working to a new problem. It's what they're best at doing. No testing, just a sloppy operation at work. SOP.

Downloaded

... and had the same issue with it running in the background despite it not being checked. I used the Revo Uninstaller Autorun Manager tool to disable it on startup, then rebooted my computer and all is well again.

Thanks. would update

Thanks. would update

This is why I wait to update

This is why I wait to update GE until there's a new map and hope they have they bugs out of GE by then.

Exactly!
There's no reason to keep Express updated just because there's a new version available. Well, unless you have nothing else to occupy your time.

Some people are finding it in the Windows Task Manager on the Startup tab so check. It might be running anyway. If you find it there, right clcik it and select “Disable”. Reboot and recheck if needed.

Turn off Garmin Express

Just go to start on windows, settings , apps , startup and then turn off Garmin Express. It will also give you the opportunity to turn off anything else from startup not needed.

I've always had the Garmin entries (Garmin Express and GarminUpdaterTask) in the startup programs and scheduled tasks section disabled, yet with the exception of this latest version I've always had to uncheck the keep running in background option.

Garmin Express 7.17.2.0

Update complete. Thank you

Maybe these

updates are cumulative? It said I had to install 7.16.3.0 before I could install this latest update. It suggested something "critical" in 7.16.3.0.
