3597 update.

I was able to complete the update on my Vista laptop using Garmin Express 5.5.0.0. So the workaround for the forced Garmin Express version update works for software updates as well as map updates.

I had both as well.

A question: Is this a new update process? I remember in the past that when the update was downloaded and copied to the GPS, that you'd disconnect it from the computer, then since it was turned fully off, reboot it and let the update process run. This update usually started with a warning to make sure that the GPS was fully charged since you wouldn't want the GPS to power off due to a low battery mid-update.

This is the first update I can remember where Garmin Express downloads the update(s), then says that to finish, disconnect the GPS from the computer for five seconds, then reconnect to perform the update. Is this new as I think?

Could this be safer because the update is performed with computer power (although a computer power failure mid-update might cause a problem)? Is it also possible that the update files remain on the computer and only the completed software goes to the GPS while the old method involved copying the update files to the GPS, then disconnect and run the actual update totally separated from the computer?

Perhaps

Because the newer generation devices don't boot up automatically once disconnected from the computer.

A good test would be for someone to use Web Updater & I'm confident that to install the software update one would have to manually restart the device.

Update change?

I used the older 5.5.0.0 version of Garmin Express because it is the last version that works on Windows Vista. I didn't really notice any change, but I wasn't really paying attention. I just used the familiar procedure of disconnecting and booting my 3597 after the download step had completed.

I do know that the Language updates were provided as a .zip file, and the reboot phase simply extracts the contents into the Text folder.

Ah, so there is a difference in GE's written procedures with the new GE although it also seems to be correct that the actual update (the "software updating" in a funny font on the GPS display) can occur with the GPS connected to the computer (after an unplug, wait 5+ seconds, reconnect) or standalone.

KIS

It’s a two stage process:

1st stage – Software is downloaded onto the GPS.

2nd stage – Powering on GPS installs the software

My 3 Updates Became Two

Decided yesterday to begin the map update on my 3597 and noticed the software and language updates pending as well. I first applied the software update by itself and following the restart, the only update offered was the new map. Oh well, I figured, I'll go ahead and update the map then see what's next. Thus far, no further updates--language or otherwise--are showing up in GE.

Following the post map update restart, I did notice there was a screenfull of completely new verbiage prior to the normal splash screen, but pressed onward without thinking to try capturing it beforehand.

Thank you for the heads-up...
