GE v.5.6.1.0 Download install problem

As posted today I tried to update my GE. First I did via GE update itself on two different laptops.

Went through all the motions and then said "Installation failed".

Next I downloaded GE from Garmin to laptop # 1 and installed it. No problem it installed GE v.5.6.1.0

Did a download from Garmin to my other # 2 laptop and this time it installed GE v.5.6.0.0

So I copied the first download from laptop 1 and saved/copied it to laptop 2. Now i have v 5.6.1.0 on both.

But my question is. Why will the update via GE not work?

Both laptops are running Windows 10 and are 64 bit.

Ditto

I also have more than one PC (Win 10 64-bit) with Garmin Express installed and have experienced your results and solved the problem with your solution. You're not alone. I don't have a clue as to the cause.

If the update from within the previous version fails, I generally try one to two more times before downloading the standalone installation. Much of the time, my 2nd or 3rd update attempt works.

For me, this happened more frequently in the past with older versions, maybe over one year ago.

Has anyone asked Garmin?

Is it a problem in the update?

Nope

Worked fine for me both on Win7 and Win10.

G.E. problems

I'm running win10 64bit and have had no problems.
You might also take a look at the MajorGeeks website.
They get the new versions quicker than on the Garmin site. Weird.
Whenever there's a new version of GE, they post it.
I've downloaded from them and never had a problem.
Great site for other stuff also.
This hi-tech apcray can be confusing, especially to us old geezers. (74 here)

install .NET framework

Why do some members have a problem installing or updating Garmin Express? Craig has two computers and one has a problem.

It could be that Microsoft .NET Framework is missing, not up-to-date, or is not being updated by Windows Update.

Check Control Panel/Programs and Features/ for Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7 (This is for Windows 7 and Windows 10. I don't know about XP and Vista.)

If it is not listed, download it from Microsoft. This is a new link since the link in another thread has changed:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=551...

Once you have .NET Framework installed, Windows Update will offer updates in the future.

That's indicative of something blocking it at your end. Check things like AV, firewalls, pop up blockers, ghostery or similar programs.

Also if using WiFi try cabling directly to your router.

A good thought

It's certainly a good thought but not the case for me. I do agree that without the needed functioning .NET Framework on a PC, there will be problems with the update or even the new installation of GE. The odd part is that I actually have more than two PCs with Garmin Express and maybe 1-2 times a year one PC (not always the same one) may exhibit the problem with not being able to update GE but being able to install it fresh. All are Win 10 64-bit devices, all run the same security programs, run from the same router (one wired, the rest wifi), have all the latest Win10 updates, etc. I have the Raymondcc .NET Detector and each device show version 2.0 and 3.0 Service Packs 3, version 3.5 Service Pack 1, and version 4.7 fully installed (although the 4.7 came with a recent Win10 update, so some of my GE updates were with an earlier .NET 4.x version). Most confusing is that a simple rerun of the GE update oftentimes will work but not always. If the problem is a missing or corrupt .NET issue, a reattempt to update GE should always fail but that isn't what I see. There was a single time in the past couple of years that even a fresh install failed on one PC requiring me to use the special Microsoft FixIt tool that's been discussed here at The Factory before I could install GE.

I wonder about a corrupt download but that seems unlikely since the GE program isn't that big and my enormous map updates always seem to succeed. Also, my guess is that a corrupt download would fail earlier in the update process giving me a "Download Failed" rather than an "Installation Failed" error and wouldn't prefer to selectively occur when trying to update GE compared to all my other downloads from the internet.

I wonder if some Windows Registry problem could be at fault but even this doesn't seem to correlate with my guessings.

All in all, I remain as confused as Melaqueman about this problem.

There was a Garmin map updater program over five years ago that had real .NET Framework issues where its installation failure gave no error message:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/31665

Most aggravating in this mapupdater problem was that the Garmin program's requirements stated that if a new .NET was needed, it would be installed as part of the Garmin program installation process, but the .NET installation wasn't done. When an installation or update failure occurs due to a .NET problem, I don't know if I should blame Microsoft, the secondary company or both, but to me, a failure of Windows OS is that errors due to .NET problems are not producing error messages that help identify the problem.

Could be your AV

Turn your antivirus software off before trying the install.

5.6.1.0 wont work like before..

I removed GE and ALL program files in the Garmin folder.
I updated and repaired NET via the link (WIN 7) Get same message as before.....
" Older version of Elevated Installer can not be removed."
Before this I get a message in popup "C:ProgramDataPackage Cache{5EE3E5B6-59FC-4087-A108-367F126BC667}v4.1.22.0 " is not available with request to located it.
I've had this message come up or something like it every time I update GE and after clicking cancel even though GE says install was cancelled after closing and re-opening GE it always opened and showed the update took.
Now after repeated tries at downloading GE will not open, saying it must close. I think with this many people having problems there is a problem with the installer.

I wonder if you're a good candidate for the Microsoft FixIt tool since you report Installer issues:

https://support.garmin.com/faqSearch/en-GB/faq/content/rnd8c...

It worked for me the one time I needed it.

Remember that the FixIt tool needs to be run 4-5 times for success.

So I found this page on Garmin site related to GE

https://support.garmin.com/faqSearch/en-US/faq/content/9G1aJ...

I followed the directions and tried to download GE again.

I tried downloading via "RUN" several times then tried downloading to computer 1st then run and get same results

Now this message:
Encountered unexpected error. This may indicate problem with this package. Error code 2753

An excellent tool

I've used it once in the past when I had problems updating my ITunes program & it worked very well.

I tried this..

after the 1st time Garmin does not show up when "having problems installing or uninstalling. When I try trying to install GE again I get "Error code 2753 message" again.

All up to date

My NET is up to date. Tried twice to update via GE failed on two laptops.
As I said I ended up downloading the GE program directly from Garmin and had no issues installing GE, neither with NET or Anti virus or a firewall.

fresh install and Garmin .NET installation

I regularly format the hard drive and do a fresh install of Windows 7 for my two PCs. This never installs any .NET Framework. It always has to be done manually as posted above. This could be more straightforward than the Fixit Tool, if that is the problem.

I have never had GE install .NET Framework as promised.

registry entries not removed

Frside007 wrote:

I don't think this is a good idea since there are registry entries related to the programs in the Garmin folder that aren't being removed.

A clean install of Windows 7 is needed. After that, only remove programs using Programs and Features in Control Panel, or that program's uninstall program.

Revo Uninstaller

I always suggest that when you want to uninstall any program, you should use the "portable" version of Revo Uninstaller.

This is freeware and portable - meaning that Revo does not need to be installed but can be run directly from the folder into which it is downloaded.

If it is run in the "Advanced" mode, it will clean the registry and delete related files wherever found.

Been using it for years

Yup.Been using Revo un-installer Pro for many years. It is very good but I have learned to scrutinize what it deletes. If I do not do that it will remove a couple of files from my NTI Media Maker and I have to re-install that program again.

ran GE again

I reinstalled the older version. Ran fine and installed fine. So it must be the installer like he said above.

I deleted all files including elevated installer...

and went back to GE 5.3.1. Once downloaded it updated to 5.4. Seems to be working fine now on Windows 7. I did update my Win 10 laptop with latest version last night and it went fine. Evidently something in newest GE that doesn't work well with Win 7 computers.

Thanks for the feedback Frside007

I'm glad you succeeded in finding the problem & doing the update smile

I'm just curious in knowing if you used the Microsoft tool to delete the Elevated Installer file ?

I have noted that when uninstalling Garmin Express the following should be deleted:

Garmin Express

Garmin Express Tray

Elevated Installer

Garmin Update Services (skip if not present)

ANT Drivers Installer x64

My Win7 updated without issue so suspect something wrong with your Win7 but not generally.

Four updates

With all I've said above, the update succeeded on the first attempt from 5.6.0 to 5.6.1 on four Win 10 PCs. This is not unexpected since I seem to have to do a fresh installation on a PC maybe 1-2 times a year due to an update failure.

As said earlier, the problem is real but unlike the earlier versions of GE, its occurrence is rare for me in recent update versions.

1-2 times a year ?

I feel sorry for you having to more or less start all over again 1-2 times a year.

When you do that, do you format your HDD ? I have been known to even do a Low Level format first, which takes a long time, then partition the HDD and after that do a format.

I have an old DOD disk that lets me do all that.

As far as I can tell I have not had to re-install Windows in at least 2 years. But if I had to, I have everything backed up to a 2 TB external HDD.

fresh installation of GE

Craig means a fresh installation of Garmin Express, not a clean install of Windows 10.

finally installed

I reinstalled Express and it seemed to take. I had to restart the PC to get it to boot ok and how the upgrade had taken.

windows problem

Problems with auto update future in windows may show with time passing from last fresh windows install. Sometimes it may be some registry problems, especially when program failed to clean all registry entries or was stopped by some problems with system.

Generally Windows tends to fall apart with time, even if you don't install anything new. On my computers I'm using set of programs installed right after system install and I'm not installing anything new. After 2-3 years top I got problems with updates, general system response time and start-up times. So what to expect when you install and uninstall programs as many users do.

Had to attempt the install process multiple times

On my PC with Windows 7. Gave error message probably four times in a row then all of a sudden it worked. I have a laptop which never has problems doing the download and install.
