Silent Voice for Garmin 2455

Has anyone created a 'silent voice' file for the Garmin? That is, if this 'silent voice' is selected, then the Garmin does not give instructions (drive 1/2 mile) or speak street names but tones and alerts are still audible. Selecting mute or turning down the volume silences both the voice and tone alerts.

I did find a thread for this topic on another forum, but no solution was ever posted.

Thanks.

I might be wrong, but I

I might be wrong, but I doubt if the average GPS user would find that a good thing. If I am following a route I want to hear the instructions so I don't have to keep looking at the unit to see what to do.

Delete Voice Files?

What would happen if you deleted your voice files?

Be sure to back up, in case it doesn't work.

I also don't know why you'd want that.

To Each His Own

I too agree I think it's better to hear the directions rather than take my eyes of the road.

I'm not sure this is what your looking for but you can give it a try.
Tools>Setting>Languages
In languages, under voice files, if using American English, the voice you've chosen (Jack or Jill or others that have name) should state Speaks Street Names", these are TTS voices (Text To Speech).

There should also be an option to choose "American English" with nothing indicating it Speaks Street Names. Check that option and I believe the directions will be silent now.

While I agree with my

While I agree with my colleagues that this is something one should not do, using a voice editor one should be able to create their own "silent" voice.

I'm the one who started this

I'm the one who started this thread... and here is a solution.

By way of background, I'm on my second Garmin. I use it mostly on the highway - the voice is simply an annoyance ('take exit 74, 20 miles ahead' doooh). Normally, I would mute the voice, but that also mutes POI alerts.

The work-around is to have a 'silent voice' among your vpm files. I now have one. I tested it this morning and it worked just fine - no noises from the Garmin EXCEPT POI alerts (ding-dong) and a 'plunk' when you power on or off. I can leave the volume set to maximum so the alert is notable over any music that may be playing.

I just uploaded the file. It is called

Silence_American_English_vpm.csv

located in the OTHER category of POI files (truly, it is 'other'). Before using, you must change the file extension from .csv back to .vpm. I did not write this file - I found it on the net from a Norwegian author. You can get it directly from his site at this location:

https://sites.google.com/site/odingpsm/garmin-lydfiler

This fellow has a couple of 'silent voice' files - they both work about the same way - the only difference is in the 'plunk' sound.

Final thought: if you can't seem to download it (or the administrator clobbers it because it not really a csv file), send me a PM and I'll send it to you.

Glad you found a solution

Glad you found a solution and it works for you, but it seems most of us would never use it.

Maybe, maybe not. But when I

Maybe, maybe not. But when I searched various GPS forums on the net, 'silent voice' was a recurring topic. For some odd reason, there were not easy solutions - just referrals to a TTS editor or delete all your voice files or some such. Anyhow, this forum now HAS a a solution.

.wav ??

Why did you not call it a Silence_American_English_vpm.wav and then tell people to rename it?

Because the upload engine

Because the upload engine will only accept .CSV files. Is there another way to do this?

Use the Contact Form Or....

If you sent a message to the Forum, via the Contact Form and explained what you wanted to do, they could email you and have you reply with the file attached, for them to load somehow.

However, since the file is created by the the Norwegian gentleman, it might be better to contact him and ask if he could do this. He does have a link to POI Factory on his website, which means that he likely speaks and reads English. English is a second language for many Europeans, especially the Scandinavian countries.

Glad you found a solution ... but I gotta tell you, I've been around GPS's since the beginning ... In the beginning, when Garmin created the auto GPS's, the dang things justed "dinged" when you had an upcoming turn.

End result, one would often turn at the wrong turn, because the "ding" didn't necessarily ding at the exact spot.

You had to constantly take your eyes off the road to look to see where you were supposed to go.

Now, I know you say the spoken directions are often redundant ... and you probably think you are an excellent driver and can take a quick look at the GPS to get an idea of where and when to turn.

But like others here ... I think it's a bad idea to silence the voice commands.

My kids are often in the crosswalks ... my wife is in the car in front of you. Heck, I might be jaywalking.

Please keep your eyes on the road at all times. Don't been messing with your cell phone or GPS when driving.

If for no other reason ... maybe your 3 year old might dart into the street behind that parked car only to be hit by another non-observant driver.

It happens every day.

Maybe it happens like this (what I do)....

I'm looking for an unfamiliar address in a nearby city. I KNOW how to get to the city and the main road I need to be on. I just need directions for a SHORT distance off the main road.

So what I do is search for the address and let the GPS load the route. I then CANCEL the route for the first XXX miles to just get in the area. It will still be saved in 'recently found'.

After I get into the area I will go back to 'recently found' and click on the route again. That alleviates hearing Jill giving me directions to get to somewhere I already know.

Your volume control is broken?

I use this method also. Many times I have the locations in a GPX or CSV file. At my leisure I can GOTO>CUSTOM POI. Select the location from file. Presto! The location is now in recently found. Cursor back to the main page.

Mute mutes everything

Re-read the original. Turning the volume down or hitting mute affects ALL sounds. The user still wanted to hear the POI alerts.

I'm surprised...

I know this thread is a bit old, but I'm searching for the same thing. Hopefully this solution will work. I'm surprised by how many people just don't understand. Why would you not want turn-by-turn? Watch out for my family? Don't crash into them because you don't have turn-by-turn! So many people just assume we all need GPS for the same purpose, but there are many different uses for a GPS! Not JUST directions. I love to have my music on and hate the constant interruption of turn-by-turn. I put a destination in my GPS 70% of time time when I drive, EVEN WHEN I KNOW WHERE I'M GOING! It's nice to have the speed limits displayed, time of arrival and traffic info. AND! I just found out my new Nuvi 2599 will chime if there's an emergency vehicle needing to get through, COOL! I want all that without all the yapping that goes along with it. It's insulting when people assume the way THEY use a GPS is the ONLY way and we must be unsafe idiots for using it any other way. There are millions of people who use a GPS, don't assume we're all exactly like you!
