Touch Screen Calibration Never Ends

I need to calibrate my touch screen. However, once I start the calibration sequence the dots keep going over and over. I never get the calibration complete message. None of the touch buttons work so the only way I can get the calibration is holding the upper left corner when powering on.

I have a nuvi 205W with the latest software. Can someone help? TIA.

Screen protector?

Are you by chance using any form of a screen protector? I’ve experienced screen “insensitivity” and erratic behavior with a 265 due to a screen protector.

You might also try the procedures at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/31601, specifically scroll down to the procedures near the bottom by jgermann.

Touch screen failure.

It sounds to me like the touch screen is shot. Sadly, on a nuvi that old (2008 release date) it is not really worth repairing. You can probably find a comparable used device on eBay in working condition for less than the repair would cost. Of course, if your 205W has a paid lifetime map update subscription, that would be a bummer because you would lose that.

^x2 - yeah, it is end of life and in all likelihood as said the screen processor is done and not worth fixing. Sorry.

Doesn’t hurt to ask…

…you never know. Somebody may have an answer.

None of that helps. The touch scree works, at least for the dots. The problem, as I indicated, is that the dots move when I touch them but they keep going. It starts in the lower left and moves as expected but winds up in the lower left again and keeps going. I never get to the calibration complete screen.

P.S. I am not using a screen protector.

Recalibration

I have a Nuvi 3597 and I have noticed that the screen has been less responsive. I never thought to recalibrate but I will try it and see if it gets any better.

Not sure you can recalibrate the 3597

A quick search seems to indicate the screen calibrate function isn’t on the 3597. You might want to initially give the screen a cleaning. Garmin recommends a very lightly dampened cloth be used and the device should be powered off while cleaning.

Thanks

I will try that.

Longshot...hard reset maybe?

Have you tried doing a hard reset and then trying the screen calibration?

GPS touch screens need calibration?

Who knew? shock

Hard Reset?

I'm not sure what that means. How do I do a hard reset?

Hard/Master Reset

Not sure if it will help fix your problem, but worth a try.

Hard Reset

That doesn't work for some reason. When I hold the lower right, it comes up to the calibration, not a hard reset.

Stylus

Hitting the dot can be tricky, if I ever have to do it I use a stylus of some sort and not a finger

Check page 42 of the manual

On the nuvi 205 there are two methods discussed on page 42 of the manual which is at https://static.garmin.com/pumac/2675_OwnersManual.pdf.

Note that you may lose some info so if you have access to Garmin Express you might want to back up your Saved Places just in case.

Thanks but the 205W does not have a reset button (that I can find) and holding the on/off slider to the on position for 8 seconds does nothing but load the maps and turns on the unit.

Look under serial number tag

On my 265W the reset button is under the white serial number tag that is located on the bottom. You can feel around for the indentation or temporarily peel the tag off for access. Likely the same on the 205.

Found it. Interesting that they hide it like that. Anyway, unfortunately that did not help. Still get the infinite loop of dots trying to calibrate.

Try taking the GPS apart and

Try taking the GPS apart and exposing the screen, then try to calibrate. If you don't succeed all you've lost is a little time. Otherwise it will work, in which case a quick cleaning of both the underside of the bezel and the screen itself should do the trick.

Calibration fails repeatedly

I have an old GPSMap 78s and the calibration fails over and over on step 2 (of 3). Can't get past that step no matter how many times I've tried.

Screen lag

I cleaned my screen but I still notice the lag when I put in the destination information. Not sure if this is just a sign of its age and that I should be looking for a newer model.

Taking the GPS Apart

I don't see any way to take it apart. I see no screws. Does it somehow jus t snap apart?

Disassembly video

This video shows how to take the 205w apart: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apd7rnGy-0Q

Note that the screws require a very small torx driver. I think the size is T5 but I am not 100% sure. Maybe someone else will provide an authoritative answer.

A plastic guitar pick or something similar works good for prying the case apart after the screws are removed.

No Joy

It was a job but I was able to open the case. There really wasn't anything to clean. The front could have been cleaned without taking it apart. The back was just metal so there wasn't anything involved with the screen there. In any case I still have the same problem. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Replace it

Old GPS, time to upgrade to a new one or pick something up for cheap on eBay.

Replace it

Not worth it. For as often as I need it, I can use Waze on my phone. It is just more convenient to better see the map on the Garmin.

Fair enough…

But, lots of decent pre-owned ones on eBay for way under $20 +shipping. Nobody but people on this forum wants them anymore.

Nope

Not true, both my daughters use Garmins and they're not on this forum.
