Does Anybody Here Keep A Smartphone Or Tablet Permanently Mounted In Their Vehicle Just To Run Google Maps?

As posted above, I am just wondering if anybody here keeps a smartphone or tablet permanently mounted in their vehicle just to run Google Maps.

I've

I've had this one mounted for a week or 2 now and it seem to be working out pretty well. It's not exactly "permanently" mounted as I can release it from the dash when I want to, although to date I haven't needed to do that:

"NOVOLAND Universal Cell Phone Dash and Windshield Mount Holder Grip for Car, Long Arm Extendable Stand for Smartphone and Tablet"

This mount is sold on Amazon, and will accommodate many types of phones and tablets. I use it mainly with an LG G5 smartphone and mostly for Google Maps use but also to test various other GPS apps like Here, and Waze.

Here's my take

I use the Garmin North America app running on an iPhone. I have a minimalist case on the iPhone. I then put a strip (about 3" long) of Velcro on the back of the iPhone case, and I have a small patch (about 1" x 1") of the opposing Velcro stuck on my dashboard. I then mount the iPhone to the dashboard with the Velcro. I've been using this for about 2 years, it is great. The Velcro on the dash blends in to the dash, looks great.

It is pretty good to get in the car, just touch the iPhone to the Velcro on the dash and that's it. Then when I leave the car, I just pull it off. Pretty simple and it works great!!!!!

The Garmin iOS app is great, has onboard mapping.

When you are dead, you don’t know that you are dead. It is only difficult for the others. It is the same when you are stupid.

Easy to remove phone

Looked at this. Is it easy to remove the tablet so you don't have to leave it in the car when you get out.

Just lean it against speedometer

I can lean my iPhone against the speedometer. It sits low enough so I can see the.speed, but is high enough to use to navigate. As long as I don't slam on the brakes it stays in place.

Bought a Beanbag Stand

I have a beanbag stand for my Galaxy. I used it a few times, but the data that is used for a long trip just made it unfeasible to use as a full time navigation device.

The one end of the mount's face plate is spring loaded. I just grab the phone and push in the direction of the spring loaded clip which then allows me to swing the phone out of the mount. Very easy IMO.

mount

I have the garmin bean bag that I bought at a garage sale for $3 it had a small clipon on it and it fit my cell phone when I got it home and took a closer look at it I popped the ball joint off and found my plastic garmin suction ball joint fit so I can use either with it, on long trips I use the garmin short trips I use the phone because it has traffic on it !

I love the Mountek mount

goes into the CD slot. Accommodates many size phones. I run Google maps on my daily commute using my iPhone 6. Been very happy with the mount for sure.

Occasionally

I sometimes use Google on my smartphone but I don't have it permanently mounted. I bought a strong donut shaped magnet which I stick to the dash. I then put a piece of an old tin can inside my smartphone case and stick the phone to the magnet. Works well in all my vehicles.

Does Anybody Here Keep A Smartphone Or Tablet Permanently Mounte

I just saw the other day that there is an Incipio car mount for the Motorola Z Family of phones. The review at th e Verizon website is not favorable, though. I wonder what the chances are that their ball is compatible with any thing made by Ram Mounts or anybody else.

Unlikely

From the pics of the Incipio, it appears its ball is smaller than either the Garmin "G" ball or the RAM 1" ball.

It could easily be adapted to the RAM system though by clamping the jaws of the vent mount to the threaded end of a RAM 1" ball stud:

I prefer my NUVI as it works

I prefer my NUVI as it works with or without data service.
