How Many Of My Fellow POI Factory Members Still Download POIs?

As posted above, I am just wondering how many of my fellow POI members do still download POIs? I haven't for a long time. Between what is already pre-loaded on the device and the ability to use the Garmin Smartphone application and send it to my Garmin Nuvi 3597, I don't really seem to have much need for it.

Anyway, for my members that do still download POIs, what POIs do you find to be the most helpful? I used to download things like amateur radio repeaters and broadcast stations, but I haven't used those lately either.

Me

I do all the time - the Rest Area, Red Light and Speed Camera files every week, for example.

I still do

No "Smart" phone. Still use my 765T at times.

We

We travel from BC to Arizona every fall and back north the following spring. I have a core set of POIs that I download the latest updates for prior to our fall and spring trips every year.

Downloading POI's

I still use my Nuvi 885 and realize a lot of the pre-loaded POI's are out-of-date. So I download POI's over 50 different categories from "Attractions" to "Zip Codes". It's easy to route trips on the Nuvi and only use my Smartphone for specific and quick directions around town. This site is invaluable for keeping POI's current!! A big "Thanks" to all the contributors!!

There isn't a lot of new POIs that I am interested in but I periodically go back and update all of the ones that were refreshed since my last POI updating.

I still download the cameras, rest areas w/restrooms, Walmart's, hotel chains I use (some change names) and restaurants.

I still d/l the red light/speed camera poi but not as often as I used to since nearby NJ got rid of them a year or so ago and here in PA there hasn't been any news ones for a while.

I still do because my gps is Street Atlas, which probably is going to updated any more. Garmin bought Delorme & I don't see them keeping street atlas.

How many still load POIs

Still do ,very handy.

Regularly

I just downloaded 25 of my favorites yesterday.

I use my smartphone as well when travelling but thanks to the efforts of our members, I find files like Walmart, McDonalds and Rest Areas are often updated more frequently than the apps.

Still use my GPS

I have a smartphone and a vehicle with built-in GPS, but I use my Nuvi because it is more visible than my phone and more up-to-date than my built-in. If Android Auto ever incorporates Waze, however, I'll retire my GPS except for long trips through spotty cell signals.

But I notice POI-Factory users are not posting updates to the speed camera database. I am seeing cameras in the DC area that are not in the database here. (Yes, I know I should be posting them myself, but that proves my point ...)

DC Area, Nuvi 2797

Downloads

I download Wawa, Wal-Mart/Sam's Club, McDonalds, Burger King, Chick-Fil-A and of course Bank of America is always up-to-date since I maintain it. I do this before every trip so I don't arrive at a location to find that it has closed/moved and to be able find the new locations.

I also d/l some others if they have recently updated.

POI Downloads

I try to download the latest Red Light POI's as soon as they are updated.

About 20 lists

I use about 20 of the POI lists, and I refresh my GPS about every other month.

Download POIs to Google Maps

I take the POIs from here and put them in maps on Google Maps.
I also put a few in my car built in. This way no matter what I use, Garmin, Smart Phone or Car, I always have my POIs with me.
I know Google Maps has a lot of POIs but there are still places I need to go that are just not in Google Maps. It is nice to have my favorite POIs where I can see them and not have to search on Google Maps to find them.

Red Light/Speed and Rest Areas. I drive a Charter bus. For my own use, nothing really. Between what's on the GPS and Google, I get what I need.

Just Updates

I don't download many "new" POI files but I update most of my existing files before our big trips. Primarily Rest Areas, favorite restaurant files (mmm), and such. Haven't downloaded the cameras files - as I get older, I have become much more attentive to speed limits and right hand turns.

Please send me a note

If you do see some cameras that aren't in our content.
I did removed 10 locations a couple of weeks ago, per an 11/23/16 RLC update by the Metropolitan Police Department.
Some of those may have been RLC/speed combos and the city could have opted to remove the RLC and keep the speed.
I'll see if I can find more information today.

Still Download about

75 or so. Most of the major shopping sites, and Auto sites, (Pilot, Loves, Travel America, etc.) All of the fast food places.
Of course, all of the Cemetery sites.

Have a safe trip

Yes

Of course, POI Factory members are a select bunch and don't reflect all GPS owners, so I expected to see the earlier responses.

For me, Rest Areas Combined, Speed and Redlight camera locations are kept fairly current and loaded to the GPS before all trips out of town. Prior to getting a nuvi 3597 with its great built-in School Zone warnings, I had my pseudo-SchoolZone file loaded with alerts on my older devices.

When traveling, I like to have the file for dealers of my vehicle and my favorite tire store in case problems arise. Also for traveling, I try to stick with Choice Hotels for lodging so I have their file which I find quite helpful. Since I'm about 100 road miles from the nearest Culver's (Butterburger and Frozen Custard), I keep their file and have used it to find a great lunch and a real treat for me, as well as using the North American Breweries' and Trader Joe's files.

For fun, I also have the Stink Alert file with alerts set, even though I've never had an alert occur, and have the Frank Lloyd Wright Works file loaded even though I've never used it. For my travels on Forest Roads, I have the Forest Fire Lookout Towers installed.

i download

I download updates very infrequently now. Even though we are now retired, we don't leave the area much. As there are no photo enforcement areas near me, I haven't updated those in at least 6 months. There is a core set I do update before we take a trip though.

I still do

I have a bunch of red light cameras on my route to and from work so I use that of course. Dunkin donuts and north american breweries are another favorite....not necessarily in that order.

CraigW wrote:

And those are the type of POIs that I think are really nice. Let's face it, gas station and restaurant POIs are nice, but those things can often be found on the device natively. However, the likelihood of Garmin ever having those types of POIs are slim to none.

One of my hobbies is ATVing. The MN DNR maps are okay, but marking certain waypoints as POIs on certain trails is really handy.

Download

I download frequently. I find the poi files here more accurate that what is on GPS.

Twice a year

I download the camera files along with a handful of others (Rest Area + Lodging) when I go on holidays to Florida.

I know where the cameras are in my neck of the woods & to be honest, I rarely use my GPS except when I leave on holidays.

POI Factory - POI

I created some Poi files and downloaded many more, as these files seem to be more accurate and more up-to-date than the POI's supplied by Garmin on their maps and updates.

I definitely still download...like I did a few minutes ago

Speed Cameras DC

I always update both RedLight and Speed cameras before a trip to DC, usually every couple of months or so. However my file shows Speed Cams on I395 bbetween the Beltway and Downtown that I am not sure really exist! Sooo, if anybody has updates, please post them!.
I also use Easter Tolls, Ferries, Rest Areas (My wife says the Handicapped bathrooms are the best) and Tourist Attractions.

...

I only download the red light POI.

Yes, I do the same. Thanks to all who maintain these files.

Downloading POIs

I do the Rest areas, National Parks, etc.

Only when I see major

Only when I see major changes. I check every week here, but update maybe every 3 months or so for the nPOIs that I use.

POI's

Whenever I see an update to one of the files in "My Favorite Files", I download the updated file to my computer. I also download the new camera files every week. I use camera files, rest areas, national parks, state parks, offbeat tourist attractions, places to visit, state lines, historic landmarks, AAA office locations and NPR transmitter locations.

So I always have the current version of these files on my computer. When I get ready to take a trip or go somewhere unfamiliar, I run POI loader and update my nuvi. Sometimes that happens every week, other times I go for a month or more without updating the nuvi.

Every Week

I download a slew of files which cover traveling anywhere in the US. Most important are the speed & red light camera files.
