Traffic Alerts..

A question..

After getting this device, Are Traffic alerts suppose to pop up when in traffic on its own? I only see them when I click on the Icon for Traffic and a side menu comes up with the information. I was under the impression that it was to tell you when you have traffic ahead without using this icon. I do not like seeing this information on the screen due to the fact it uses just a little than half the screen.

I thought the unit was to inform you by both voice and notice on the screen. All I get is the dashed line where there is traffic and then I need to touch the Menu bar, then touch traffic to see this information (then I need to touch the X to remove it from the screen)

You must be navigating a route to get visual and audible traffic alerts.

You've probably done this also but another setting to check is "Settings" > "Map & Vehicle" > "Map Tools" > "Traffic"

This is a new one on me. If you are getting traffic reports which show on the traffic map, it would appear the GTM60 receiver cable is functioning correctly. That indicates the problem is in the 3597 itself.

I assume you loaded the latest firmware along with the current mapset when you first received the unit. I would continue to use the traffic feature and see if the visual and audible failure continues. If so, a call to garmin might be in order. The unit came with a one year warranty so a replacement is another possibility.

As many of us here have discovered, Garmin's HD traffic (GTM60) isn't the best product for use in rural areas. If you have a smartphone and don't mind paying a one time fee, Garmin's Smartphone Link app with the traffic / weather feature offers more comprehensive traffic reporting in all areas with cell coverage.

It should be noted however that like the GTM60, Smartphone Link traffic reports may not display correctly either if there is a problem with the 3597.

NICE!!!

NICE!!!

Sale Price Back Down to $169

Wow, that's great and a bit of a surprise. Compared to past offerings, this has been available longer than I'd have expected even without a later price drop and is cheaper than what ebay used devices are typically selling for.

If I didn't have two, I'd consider buying one as a backup.

and free shipping again

and free economy shipping is back. I think for a while the cheapest shipping was about $5.

Thanks for posting this. I've driven around with mine for over three weeks and decided it is enough more to my liking than our 3790s that I needed to buy one for my wife.

There are a host of small differences from the 3790. A few annoy me, but the considerable majority seem improvements, some little, some rather big. Here are a few improvements that I notice:

1. Much faster route calculation times
2. Seems not to have the habit of almost always giving you a first misleading instruction on starting.
3. much better recalculate behavior--when you are off route it just quickly puts the new one up, without announcing "recalculating". It also seems less likely to give you a first recalculate that pointlessly takes you back on previous route when that is a bad choice.
4. Does not give you a warning that power was lost on starting up after you shut down too short a time before pulling the cord.

There are lots more, but those are some I like the most. Probably the change I dislike the most is that you have to click the "I promise not to kill myself" button on every power up. But that goes very quickly.

3597 LMTHD Refurb soon available again?

I noticed today on theGPSStore.com that they are again taking orders for the 3597LMTHD refurb for $179.95. They are shown on back order with expected availability on 5/16/2017.

I was surprised to see this as I figured the refurb supply on this popular model had dried up months ago. If anyone is still wanting one of these it may be worth watching this next week to see if they show up as in stock.

Being unhappy with a 3597 may not be a requirement for returning it. It may simply be that something has gone wrong with them and they have been returned under warranty, refurbed and resold. grin

I would be surprised if Garmin is still manufacturing 3597's to sell as refurbs at discount prices. It seems like it would be a stupid marketing strategy and sabotage sales of the DriveLuxe models.

But then, I guess Garmin has been accused to doing other stupid things ... so who knows?

You may be right Rick, but again I have not read much about excessive failure rates on the 3597. But then again, the people who report these things in forums is a very small sample of the total customer base ... so I suppose it is possible. Still, it seems like we see a lot of positive feedback on this model in the forums.

since my GTM 60 is wired so I can't easily take it out of the car.. (I've had a pigtail taped out of the fuse block into a multi-way electrical accessory slitter for my GPS and Cam's [One facing forward and one facing out the back]) that all come on when the ignition is either in ACC or engine running.

Having a second GTM 60 let's me take the mount, GPS and spare GTM 60, toss it into a travel bag and travel using another vehicle which I used to do before I mounted the power cables so they don't come out very easily.

$50 was the best price I could find for the GTM 60

very happy user

I bought two of these last fall when the GPS store had an earlier session of refurb availability. They arrived in pristine condition--much better condition than four 3790LMT refurbs I bought about three years ago. So far they have worked very well. Fewer glitches than on the 3790s (and FAR fewer than on the 855 I had before) and most of the intentional design and interface changes are improvements from my point of view.

referb or new?

Bought mine from GPS store for $189 as a refurb.

Made me wonder if it may have been a new unit.

No problem with update and unit works great.

Highly recommended!

Just checked their website and they are not offering the value bundle for the 3597. They are available individually.

I see that FactoryOutletStore.com now has DriveLuxe 50LMTHD refurbs for $179.95 and free shipping. I don't have any experience with that store, but they have fairly high marks on resellerratings.com.

For my money, I would still prefer the older 3597, but for folks who want the newer model, this seems like a pretty good deal.
