Good to know

At that price and with a one-year warranty, this is a better deal than what most used ones are going for on eBay right now.

If considering a purchase, don't wait too long as these sales end pretty quickly.

That's a steal

That's where I purchased mine and very happy with both the seller and unit itself.

Many GPS Gurus out there have also stated that this is Garmin's top automotive product therefore if your in the market hurry before they're all gone !

3597 Backup

I like mine so much that I got a second one as a backup. Have my POI files on a small SD card so if one fails I do not need a computer to load them, also don't have to remember to keep them in sync.

Bought one several months ago at their sale

and I've been really pleased. It has worked fine and the 3597 is a great unit.

i got one and very satisfied with the device and seller.

3597 Refurb

I bought one too.

But I wonder why there are so many of these refurbs available ?

In reading the reviews it seems to be a pretty reliable unit.

My guess

My guess is that they're not actually refurbs but rather left-over new stock repackaged in a white box so as not to compete with sales of the new Drive models.

Got another as backup

Possibly but didn't we see sales like this long before the Drive series went on sale?

Good GPS. I like it

Good GPS. I like it

After reading..

I am going to the site right now and getting one, I see a lot of people really enjoy this model. I don't need a new one but do need to replace my existing one now. I keeps shutting down on me when I am Driving and just when I really need it (the turn is coming up, etc.)

So you guys talked me into it.. Purchasing one right after I get off this site!

Thanks for the information about this device!

Once it arrives, a somewhat dated thread here has a lot of useful info, especially for folks updating from a much earlier Garmin device:

good fulfillment so far

I ordered triggered by this thread the evening of October 13, selecting the free economy shipping option. They took about 24 hours to get into the scan of UPS. As it is shipping from Wilmington NC to Albuquerque, the due date is estimated at Thursday, 10/20. The enticing price mentioned in the first post was the total cost for me.

The bigger question is whether I really prefer the 3597 to my 3790 (which was also a refurb). In case others are considering the same transition I plan to post my personal comparative reactions on this site.

interesting

interesting

Just bought one...

Couldn't pass up a deal like this. I have wanted one of these since I bought my 3590 a couple of years ago. The 3590 is a nice unit, but I have heard that the 3597 is another step up. I am not a real fan of the Drive units that are coming out these days, so I figure that between the two, (3590 & 3597), I should be good for the next 10 years or so. Looking forward to receiving this unit so I can start playing with it.

Yes, it appears the GPS Store price went up to $179. As Muel9k points out, it's likely due to supply and demand. The orders placed by us factory members alone may have played a part in the increase

The price is still less than half that of Amazon's $414 for a new unit and $120 less than their $299 refurb price.

I'm surprised there is still a supply of new 3597's available.

Thank You

This looks like it could be a suitable replacement for a 755 the daughter's been using for years.

I got it!

I just got mine last night.. It came with a 2015 (.10?) map which I 1st Backed up then updated to the current map. Was very quick.

I then deleted everything that was not English and left me at about 82% full which is good I believe.

Set it up and started plying with it. I like it, even if I am missing some of the features that my 2455 had (Dashboard, adding icons to the map screen, I also thought I was missing the Train/mta stuff but its there!) The Voice command is GREAT. I will report once I start using it.

I called, and they were willing to give me the price before the $10 increase.

However, they would not give me the free economy shipping. So ground shipping was $6.97

So, I did not really get the price before yesterday's $10 price increase. But, I saved $3 over today's price.

Total $176.90

Thanks for posdting. I have one of these and a driveluxe. I may buy another 3597 as backup / travel bag unit.

Got mine yesterday

Is seems to be faster than my 3590, but there are a few things I like on the 3590 better. The changeable speed limit signs comes to mind straight off. The 3590 also has some other bells and whistles that the 3597 doesn't. One issue I have is the end user license agreement. In the past, once you acknowledged that you had read it, you never saw it again. On the 3597, it pops up every-time I start it up. Does anyone know how to disable this? It gets annoying pretty quickly.

3597

The agreement screen will go away and not show up again after you have used your 3597 in actual navigation for a short while.

Edit: I will take that back. The warning screen (but not the user license) still shows up on my 3597. I guess I am so used to it, I just don't notice any more. If you just let it set for a few seconds, it goes away on its own.

There are a couple of things you will get with your 3597 that your 3590 doesn't have. Shaping points is one feature you may find useful if you do multi-point route plannng. Shaping points are like via points, but are not announced and can be skipped without the nuvi continually trying to take you back to the missed point

Real directions is another feature that I find very useful ("Turn right at the stoplight" instead of "Turn right on Elm Street".)

Also, when navigating to a destination, it shows both the next turn (top line) and the street you are driving on (bottom line). I don't recall if the 3590 had this feature.

It seems to stop after a few times of use... I just got mine too and it did ask a few times but no longer does!

I to like my new 3597 but as you I miss a few things that my 2255 had. But in all, it is a better machine, just have to get used to not having the "Fun" things that the 2455 had.. (Things like photo viewer, Calculator, Dashboard that I could change as well as place 3 icons right on the map screen. It also had a pedestrian setting that I did use.)

Still have not really used it yet.. This weekend will be my real test..

photo viewer.

Actually, the 3597 has a photo viewer ... it is for some reason hidden away on the Diagnostics menu. It also has the 3 configurable data fields on the right of the navigation screen. You just have to click on the 3 bar menu in the lower right and turn on Trip Data. Then touch each of the three data fields and select the value you want displayed. Note that you get different choices for data values depending whether you are navigating to a destination or just driving in map display mode with no set destination. You can also change what is displayed in the lower right data field next to the 3 bar menu.

The main thing I miss from my older nuvi's is the MP3 player and audio output jack. But the pluses of the 3597 far outweigh the things I miss.

Thanks for all the comments

I do like the magnetic mount. And, the real voice directions are nice. This is the first unit that I have owned that had "real directions" on it. I used it a little while ago and it told me to turn left at the end of the street instead of "turn left on Western Row Road". A little easier to understand if you are in unfamiliar territory. Saves you from trying to look at street signs. I am looking forward to getting more familiar with the unit.

WOW..Disappointing.

This 3597 comes from the factory with almost no free internal memory space. Only 48 MB free of 7.02 GB.

My old 750 has far more free space than this 3597.

My mother in law just bought one of these, too. I need to help her update it. I think I need to do the following for her:

-Install micro SD card

-Delete non English language files

-Delete non-English keyboards

It seems like there may be some other things to make more room, but I can't recall what they are right now.

Text, keyboards, help files.

Text, keyboards, help files. Text is a folder, I don't think there is even a EN_US in there, but check.

and how to see files?

HowardZ wrote:

Mine has slightly more than that, and a bit more yet after I deleted a few languages of no interest to me.

But it still has only about 300MB free, which is a shockingly low fraction for a new machine.

Also, as compared to my 3790, when this is hooked up to my PC the connection is configured differently. It does not get a drive letter, but much more seriously, I can't see some of the files in Windows File Explorer (and yes I have the options to see the hidden stuff activated for the whole PC). Does anyone have a Windows workaround for that? As-is my standard backup technique probably won't work.

Aside from that, I mostly like the new unit. It has been well behaved, mostly intuitive in control response, and the things I miss from the 3790 are matched and then some by small and large advantages of the 3597. I especially like the faster routing calculations. Not hearing "re-calculating" when it calmly revises routing to fit your non-compliance is a big net plus. It will be a bigger plus when my daughter is in the car (drove her nuts).

MTP and protected OS settings

Two issues may be causing this:

1) MTP mode

http://www.poi-factory.com/garmin/problemsolver#system-folde...

2) Double check your folder settings

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30393

Many follow steps 4 and 5 in the above faq but forget step 6: Make sure that check box next to “Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)” is NOT selected

Add an SD Card

Sadly, many of the newer Garmin GPSr's have little free space due to the ever increasing size of the map update files. Short of deleting unwanted files, the best solution is to simply add an SD card.

16GB SD cards are available on Amazon for $6.69

https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-SDSDQM016GB35A-16GB-microSD-C...

Add that to the sale price of the 3597 and it's still a bargain IMO.

Tips for SD card use?

I'm perfectly willing to buy and add an SD card to my 3597. As a matter of fact there is one plugged into my 3790 right now, but so far as I noticed that one never did me any good. It turned out on the 3790 I did not really need it.

But can anyone offer advice as to how I might reconfigure things so that 3597 actually takes advantage of the added memory? Unless I can relocate at least one of maps files, track files, or waypoints to it, I don't see how it would help.

From the offered description, MTP mode it is in my case. Thanks for the link, and I'll try the method out very soon.

Question: will both Garmin Express and BaseCamp work OK in both modes? Or do I need to mode switch between sessions when I want to see all files from Windows and sessions when I am using Garmin software to talk to the 3597?

Thanks.

Either mode should be fine when using Express or Basecamp. No need to switch back and forth. It's only the older software like Mapsource that wants Mass Storage mode only.

There is nothing that needs to be done. After the map becomes a little larger, at that time Garmin Express will put all or part of the map on the SD card automatically. Then the internal memory will be mostly empty.

Now is the time to install the card - before it is needed.

Only Garmin knows...

HowardZ wrote:

If like my 3597, the four ASR files have the same filedate as the img file for the latest map update and we can conclude that all four rather large-ish files are needed.

There have been cases where asr files for older map files were not deleted and these older files just took up lots of space and offered nothing. This does not seem to be the case in the current situation with the 3597 and the 2017.30 map. I did check my nuvi 2460 and see that with the current map update, it has just a single asr file.

Just ordered one...

...now I need a trip to try it out.
