The power finally came back on after the hurricane and I was able to get my units updated.

I already turned off the firewall

Freezing often is due to either an AV or other program, eg firewall, blocking the download. Try turning them off and see what happens, or use another PC.

Thanks for the advice.

I already turned off the firewall even tho' it wasn't necessary in earlier map updates.

It was GE. I had an older version and updated to the current one. Took about 45 excruciating minutes to d/l and complete the update.

Ah yes, always worth ensuring you update Express first.

There's a question in there.

There's a question in there. How do you update with a GE that needs an update? Just as soon as I start GE, it always says that there is a new update before GE ever gets started. So how do you not get the update to GE before starting?

Nice!

This update has new I-69 stretch in southern Indiana connecting Bloomington to Evansville. Previous map updates did not have this newest section that connects to Bloomington. I plan to navigate this new stretch of road something in November.

Interestingly, GE did not prompt me about the new GE version. I only found out by clicking on about and clicking on the new version button.

Strangely, GE puts the onus on the user not the other way around.

Do you have GE running in the background? I don't. When I start GE it's not running already in the background. Also, I'm on a Mac, and GE has always popped up the box with "GE update available, Yes or No."

Is this just Mac, or does Windows also report when a GE update is available?

--
Frank DriveSmart55 37.322760, -79.511267

Yep ...

... mine has normally updated itself as I keep it running in the background. However before an update I do check first just in case.

My Garmin Express does not

My Garmin Express does not run automatically in the background. Perhaps that is why I wasn't prompted for an update. I was able to update the maps to 2017.30 on my 3590 with Garmin Express 4.1.27.0. I tend to keep less stuff running in the background of my pc for a smoother experience.

Excuse my ignorance but why would I have GE running in the background? I only use it to back up or d/l new maps.

I have it running in the background as I have numerous garmin devices. Express is not simply there for updating maps. It also updates firmware. By keeping it running I'm advised automatically whenever any type of update is available. It will also download any map update in the background, notifying you when it's available to be transferred so makes the whole process far easier.

SD Card

Hi, I will be updating today and will look to see what is on the SD card I have installed in my Nuvi 750. I have a 32GB card in it. I have never specifically directed anything to go on the card, so I think only update map info might be there. I am hoping that regardless of what is on the card, I have ample space to not have the problem described.

You almost certainly will be able to add the new map update to the SD card. In fact, your current and maybe previous map updates may remain there as well.

I suggest that once updated to 2017.30, you check your 750's Map Info page to confirm that the 2017.30 map is checked and that other older versions, if there, are unchecked. Having multiple versions checked and active may cause grief.

Mine doesn't run in the background, either. It always ask to update if there is an update. That's why my question. Does yours prompt for the update when it's available? What OS are you running? Win10?

Update

Phrac: I running windows 7 and my Garmin Express hasn't asked for an update in a long time. If I bring up Garmin Express and go to the settings/about I do have an option to "check for updates to express". Its done manually which works for me. I'm using "Windows 10 Firewall Control" and Garmin Express is enabled (has access to internet).

In my Settings there is no Option like that. Only to Keep Garmin Running in the Background, and start GE when a device connects. The link to Check for Updates is there in About, but for the last few months or more, it automatically checks for updates on start up.

My version of GE might be old. I never update unless its a major game changer or the app / program needs the update before I can use it.

Installed last night

I put the updates onto a couple units last night. Fast, and easy, especially for the second and later units. The new map still tries to take me down some primitive dirt roads near Ohiopyle, PA. I guess I'll submit another report.

You have probably been asked this before but are you sure you don't have the "Unpaved Roads" avoidance turned off (unchecked)?

Updated My Nuvi 2599 - No Trouble

I used the clone method to put the update on mine. That worked very smoothly. Thank you charlesd45 for sharing that technique.
Thank you billybovine for letting us know about the new map.

Got back from trip...

and did the updates. Started by updating Garmin Express to 4.1.28.0 and then running the updates on each of the units. The 2455 took 35 minutes from start to finish and the 2555 took 25 minutes. No problems now it's time to go see how they work with new maps and firmware smile

Running in the Background

sussamb wrote:

I had GE running in the background and it did nothing. It didn't update its self or popup when I attached my GPS or download the map update. It worked fine when I ran it, but in the background, no joy.

Well ...

... Are you running the latest version? Have you selected the options to run in the background and to launch when a device is connected?

Thank you

Just done and took about an hour.

Firmware Update: 8.30

The new map update also included a firmware update for my 2595: v8.30. This was a surprise since the unit was released quite a while ago and the last firmware update had to be at least 5 years ago. Just thought I would pass it along since I haven't seen it mentioned here yet. If anyone knows what changes were included or has a pointer to them at Garmin, please let us know.

Well ...

... Pretty much every unit has had an update apparently to cope with larger map files, the EU map is likely to exceed the FAT32 4Gb limit in the next update. Your update is likely to be that.

The maps are far from perfect in rural areas. I had unpaved roads avoidance checked, and I could duplicate this routing any time. I was taken over these same roads previously and it was a gravel road that turned on to a dirt road that turned into a farmer's access to his fields and finally emerged onto a rutted dirt road. I just have to sit down and do the error reporting.

Software change logs.

After several misfires, good to go

The 2017.30 install stalled and failed several times on my 70LMT for unknown reasons but after restarting the app after the third or fourth attempt, it seemed to be fine and I'm good to go.

Check your route type...

Often the case if one selects "shortest route" rather than "fastest route".

I was running the next to the latest version. I had to go to the Settings > about > check for updates... to get 4.1.28.0.

General setting check boxes for both ... keep running in background and automatically launch... checked.

Update schedule set to anytime.

Proxy set to Auto.

It's a mystery to me why it didn't do any of the things it should have.

Guess I'll have to wait

Guess I'll have to wait until end of month since Comcast has data caps now where I live. May have to cut back on Netflix so I can update my GPS.

FIxed

this update finally fix that annoying thing where you enter the address like "124 street" and would give you some suggestion like "123 street" or "126 street" instead.

Thanks for advising about the new update. I'll need to find a fast internet connection, since I'm currently traveling.
