Two 3D map files
I have successfuly updated the CN NA maps to 2017.30 on my nuvi 3597 LMTHD, using Garmin Mapupdater.
When I go to Setting > My Maps, I see the installed maps on the internal memory of the 3597, with the check mark selection next to them.
The CN North America NT 2017.30 3D is shown twice on this selectable map list.
When I plug the 3597 to the PC and open the system's folder there is only one "gmap3d.img" file listed, with 234,976 MB.
Why the map selection on the 3597 is showing two selectable 3D maps ?
I would appreciate any advice on this issue.

If using Garmin Express to update a nuvi 3597, your offerings in myMaps will (or at least should) be:
Cnna-Na-Dem North America DEM
CN North America NT 2017.30 3D
CN North America NT 2017.30 ALL
Using GarminMapUpdater rather than Garmin Express has multiple issues updating devices that offer DEM or 3D maps:

I don't have an answer for why you're seeing the 3D map listed twice with only one gmap3D.img file. You could look for other .img files and see if you have a suspicious .img file of exactly the size of your gmap3D.img file which is named something along the lines of Dxxxxxxx.img. If the 'D' file is there, you could try disabling it to see if your duplicate offering in myMaps disappears. You may need to look for extra .img files in locations other than the .system folder as well so I suggest you search for all .img files in the entire nuvi storage as well as any SD card if one is present.
The best solution is to use Garmin Express in the future to update a 3597. If ghost files remain from previous use of GarminMapUpdater, you may need to do some investigating of the 3597's file contents to remove the ghost files. If so, for heaven's sake, be sure to have a full backup of your nuvi before starting the tinkering.
When connected to your PC, can you tell us the amount of free space in your 3597 and whether you've deleted any voices or other files to give the device more storage or added extra voices, etc?
Good luck. Report back as we'd like to learn what you find.
Thanks for your advice
Thanks for your advice CraigW.
I know, that sooner or later I must instal Garmin Express on my computer and use it for updates.
So far I managed to use Webupdater and Mapupdater for this task. Other than to copy the saved DEM file back to the device (after updating the map) I did not have much problem. This latest 2017.30 mapupdate seems to work fine on the 3597. I see the selectable maps on the My Maps page:
Canna-Na-Dem North America DEM
CN North America NT 2017.30 ALL
CN North America NT 2017.30 3D
CN North America NT 2017.30 3D (the 3D file is shown twice)
I looked for, but could not find other .img files on the device.
The 3597 properties show: 7.01 GB Total space
6.60 GB Used space
0.42 GB Free space
I only have one voice (Samantha) and one vehicle icon. Removed the un-necessary ELUA, Help and Language files.
I always do a full backup after map updates. I will try to find and remove the 3D ghost file. So far did not see it.
Thank you for the help.

orphan 3D file?
@Cosmopolitan ...
You could browse through the \Garmin\GarminDevice.xml file to see if the gmap3d.img file is listed twice. You should find a section like the following near the bottom of the file. It might give you some kind of hint as to why the device "thinks" there are 2 files.
<UpdateFile>
<PartNumber>006-D2364-25</PartNumber>
<Version><Major>20</Major>
<Minor>17</Minor></Version>
<Path>.System</Path>
<FileName>gmap3d.img</FileName>
</UpdateFile>
In addition to an orphaned gmap3d.img file make sure you don't have any orphaned gmap3d.gma or gmap3d.unl files somewhere. Be sure to check your SD card (if you have one) as well as the internal memory.
If you are certain there is only one file, you could delete GarminDevice.xml, then do a full power reset (hold the power button until you get the Shutdown prompt) to force a full rebuild of GarminDevice.xml. This should happen automatically with each bootup, but I have seen cases where it doesn't happen for some unknown reason.
Of course a master reset is something else you could try.

Good work so far
Thanks for your advice CraigW.

Good luck. Alandb's advice may finally solve your issue. I hope you let us know what you find.
Like you, I avoided Garmin Express for quite a while. But the several recent versions really do work well so I doubt that you'll be upset when you install it. Just be sure to go to the Settings and turn off the various features you don't want to be active. A bonus with using Garmin Express is that those of us with the 3D and DEM maps won't have extra hoops to jump through with each map update.
If you do switch to Garmin Express in the future, don't throw out WebUpdater. If you do ever have updates to your installed TTS3 voices, there are times that only WebUpdater will alert you and let you download/install the occasional voice updates.
PS: I do like the way you initially asked for advice. If only everyone with an issue would provide as much necessary info as you did.

Good points. I hadn't thought of the potential for a double .gma or .unl file causing the problem. Ditto for the .xml exploration thought.

Updated my nuvi 3597 this morning

My installation did exactly the same thing. I have a very old, very slow Nuvi 1450 and used MapUpdater for the install.

AOK
I successfully updated my 1450 using MapUpdater. Ironically, it took me longer to backup my current version to my laptop than it did to do the actual update.

At first GE said 59 min
Desk top. When plugged in stated 1hr 28min. Real time was going faster than GE time. But in the end, it took 1hr 26 min at (12 mbps, although speed test showed 22mbps.)
Something strange happened this time. On GE it shows a dark blue section that states what GPS is plugged in. Right below that is a light blue section that states "we got it from here. Keep device........." I was doing other things on my next door laptop when I noticed the color of the light blue changed to RED and stated something like "Your computer might not be connected to.....". This happened 4 times during download and install. Never did read all of it. Has this happened to others?
Like others, 'time remaining: 1 minute" took at least 8-10 minutes.
In Base Camp, once I unplugged GPS, it shows that map 2017.30 is installed and on memory card. I guess things are OK.

Time to download
The download time people are reporting is a totally meaningless time span.
The download time depends on what you are using, T1, DSL or Cable and what download speeds your ISP provides you with.

alandb
You are right. The 3D file is listed twice in the Garmin Device.xml file.
One is gmap3d.img, the other is gmap3d1.img. I do not know how the second one got there?
However the nuvi 3597 .system folder only have one gmap3d.img file in it, with 234,976 size, which I believe is right because my other nuvi shows the same size.
I did not find orphaned gmap3d.gma or gmap3d.unl files.
When I go to the 3597's Setting>My Maps I select only one of the two 3D maps offered there (leave the second one blank) and I see the 3D buildings on the screen in Toronto.
So, I believe that the updated 2017.30 map and the 3D map is working fine.
Thank you for the advice.

Went smooth and quick
Installed the new map update to my desktop computer and all went without a problem. I no longer have any Garmin units but the map still updates to the computer.

Thanks for the heads up. Will be downloading soon. Have a good weekend everyone. For all fellow Canadians - Have a good Thanksgiving.
Downloaded to my 350 and 3590
A couple of days ago, I downloaded to both of my units. The 350 took about an hour. The 3590 was hooked up to the computer and I went to bed. When I got up a couple of hours later, it was done. No problems with the 350, but I received a download error about 20 minutes into the download on the 3590. I just did a re-start on GE and it finished with no problems. I am currently doing my daughter's Nuvi 50. It has been running about 10 minutes. It originally said it would take 38 minutes, but I am now down to 8 minutes. So, it looks like it is going to take about 18 minutes total.

I used Garmin Map Update for both 255W & Garmin Express for my 3597 using Alandb cloning method & all went extremely well
For those that used Express, don't forget to do a little cleanup afterwards to regain you're lost disk space

When you restart after the install, that's a hard reset, same as holding the Power Button and Powering off.

When I turn off my Nuvi 2450 I normally touch the Power Button quickly and it gives me the option to change Brightness or Turn Off. This is how I always turn it off. If I hold it just a little longer it will turn off but I thought that put it in sleep mode.

A hard reset makes you select many defaults and frequently loses Favorites which I've never seen with a map update. I do agree that a full restart from a Power Down is the same as the restart from a map update but as we call a hard reset here at The POI Factory, it's a technique to return the device to its settings as it left the Garmin factory.

I am talking about a master reset
I have seen several of you recommend a master reset when there is trouble and also after a map update.
I am talking about a master reset as some have requested after a map update. Nothing is wrong but I thought someone suggested to do a master reset after each map update.

Yes indeed, I've also read reports of some who routinely do this after each update. It seems OK to me as long as they back up their Favorites and are OK with spending the time re-customizing their settings and restoring Favorites if they were lost.
For me, I have done a hard reset maybe 2-3 times over the many years, and only when my Garmin seems to be acting flaky.
I doubt that either method is better...tomato tomahto.

I'm having the same problem on my (newer) 2599 LMT ... it stays at "1 minute left" for hours - evnen overnight ! I've restarted it three or four times, and even put a freshly formatted 4GB memory card in it, but no change...
